@ littlesue - He does look a very well-built fellow!
littlesue said on 11/Dec/18
He was always known as 'Big Ron' when he managed my team, West Brom. He was at least 6ft, would go on about 5ft 10 now though.

Another R Atkinson, ay? I bet he's not as funny as Rowan, but he is of similar height, at least he used to be!

5ft10.5 now, and 6ft for Ron's peak.

He's tall for a man of his generation!
Tubbs said on 23/Jan/17
Met him on Friday with Barry Fry, Ron is 5'11 these days, Barry around 5'8.

Rob always lose posture in photos, around an inch, 2 cm on average.
Physics Enemy said on 24/Aug/11
I agree Rampage; Rob is losing 3cm with his posture here. If Rob straightened out, Big Rob would look 176 cm. I don't think he's over 5' 10", I'd actually suggest 5' 9.5".
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 15/Aug/11
If Rob was to straighten up, Ron would look 175cm-176cm max.
I don't he's over 5ft10 these days. Most likely a little below in fact. Was a good manager though!

The avarage mans height in the Uk in 1950s was only 5'7.5''he was called Big because he was nere 13st and was known as Tank he had a big frame most players were not more than 9-10st then there not much over 11st now.

@Shaun: You don't have to be tall, muscular, or fat to be called "Big somebody". When I was in high school a lot of people started calling me "Big Jay" and I'm only 5'8" and 130 pounds and don't fit into any of the tall, fat, or muscular categories lol. I don't know why they call me "Big Jay" for, some of my friends just started calling me that and it just became a nickname that stuck I guess. Also look at Rappers Big Boi who is only 5'6"ish and Big Sean who's only 5'7" and neither of them are tall, muscular, or fat either.

Thats one heck of a tan.
Shaun said on 13/Aug/11
That said his build and face is not too disimilar to John Wayne's even if 4 inches shorter...
Shaun said on 13/Aug/11
Of course 5'11" plus is the start of tall range but I would never call anybody Big somebody under 6'2" unless they were hugely muscular or fat at 6'.
Shaun said on 13/Aug/11
@Helga and Little Sue. I know to you females 6' seems tall but being 6'1.5" myself I tend to have a different perspective I guess. John Wayne is what I'd call a big man and he was close to 6'4" in the 1960s. I find it odd that people a certain 6' is pretty tall can it barely 2 inches above the average. I agree that 6' flat is the start of tall range but not the range I'd call "big".
littlesue said on 12/Aug/11
Remember though he was first called 'Big Ron' back in the 60's when he was a centre half. 6ft was pretty tall then, also the 'big' referred to his large shoulders and frame
Robby D. said on 11/Aug/11
I am surprised. I always thought he was over 6'0".
James said on 11/Aug/11
6ft is not a 'big' amount above average in the UK so its not particurley big generally speaking. i'd described 183cm as above average/tall. A 183 or 184cm man can look very normal when surrounded by legit 6'2 guys.

5'9-5'10 is very average i agree.
Lenad said on 11/Aug/11
between 5'9 and 5'10 is about average
James said on 9/Aug/11
6ft is not that big but it is tall and still above average. i would describe 6'4 as 'prettey big'.

With a big personality and standing at a tall height he could have given the illusion of being taller than he really was for sure.
James said on 7/Aug/11
Well he was kinda big at 6ft when younger. 5'10.5 is not short and with a build like his he could still look imposing.
Editor Rob
2 crew members commented when they saw him 'he's not very big'.

I guess in his prime he had a big personality, big build and 6ft is pretty big
miko said on 6/Aug/11
Big presence.
Helga said on 6/Aug/11
Well it says in his prime he was 6 foot tall so that is probably where the "Big Ron" nickname came from. Naturally he has lost some height as he has aged.
Shaun said on 5/Aug/11
I must admit I thought he was about 6'4" to get the "Big Ron" name. I thought he was like John Wayne size.
littlesue said on 5/Aug/11
Well he was 6ft in his prime which is pretty tall, he also had a big stocky build, also I think he had a big personality, loud and bubbly and fairly outspoken though not as cutting as Clough was.
Shaun said on 4/Aug/11
What was with all the "Big Ron" names. Hardly very big is he.
A said on 4/Aug/11
Looks 5'10" in photo.
Dean 5ft 9.25 said on 3/Aug/11
Looks more like 177-178cm than 179cm if no shoe difference?
Triplescrew said on 3/Aug/11
I see 5'10", Rob what did he look like to you? Was he standing straight?
James said on 3/Aug/11
looks this

We used to call him Big Ron when he was at West Brom, one of the best Managers we had there. I see James Cordern is to play him in a Football film. I bet Ron is not too keen on that!!
