I might 'tower' over Pacino. But I've never met him. I remember meeting Gregory Peck at Vegas a long time ago. He seemed so small in person.
One of my best friends is 5'4" - exactly a foot shorter than I am. Pacino doesn't look that tall to me. I'll go with Anonymous' estimate of 5'2".
My real objection isn't his stature but everything else. In "Righeous Kill" he played a street cop. He was seventy years old at the time and looked every day of it in spite of all the black hair dye. He was quite contained and effective in the Godfather films but more recently hasn't been so much an actor as an over-actor. He should take a page from Eastwood and age gracefully.
LG69 said on 8/Mar/13
@Shakesniper, you "towered over him" at 5'6"? I laugh when people use the word "towered" to describe a few inches difference. I mean if you were over 6 feet tall then you could say "I towered over him." Anyway, Pacino is no taller than 5'5" today.

RisingForce said on 18/Oct/12
Well, Danimal, I'll agree that he can look 5-7ish, and you're not the only one who thinks he's that height, but I strongly believe he's about 5'8". The reason he looks shorter, in my opinion is his poor posture in recent years. If he was really about 5'7", I think he'd look 5'6" range a lot of the time with his posture. When his posture is decent, he looks more like 5'8" to me. I can buy a weak 5'8", but he looks like a guy on the low end of average, not legitimately short to me. When he was younger, I think he was right around 5'9", so about an inch loss at 69 would be normal.

Pacino still looks pretty much exactly 5'5" there. If he's under 5'5", it's barely, and if he was ever over 5'5", I doubt it was my much. I think he's just an example of a guy who didn't lose much height. I think some might think he has because there are more premiere pictures available today than the 70's and 80's, and I don't think Pacino wears at premieres, but he does wear lifts and heels in many movies, so I think many have the lifted Pacino in movies from the 70's and 80's in mind compared to the recent liftless Pacino at premieres.

I think that 5'6" is right for his peak, but he looks about 5'5" nowadays.
RisingForce said on 28/Sep/12
Pacino still looks about 5'5" just like he always was. He's worn lifts and boots with big heels in countless movies and still rarely above 5'6". He wore lifts in the Godfather and was dwarfed by 5'10" max James Caan(though I heard Caan wore lifts in the movie too). His shoes were suspicious in And Justice For All and he still barely came past 6'3"-6'4" Craig T Nelson's shoulders. He had boots with big heels in Scarface, though he could pull off 5'7" in some scenes next to 6'1" Steven Bauer, but that's when you couldn't see their feet. He wore cowboy boots in Carlito's Way and was still shorter than 5'8" Sean Penn in slippers.
And finally, look at this scene from The Devil's Advocate.
Click Here He only looks about 5'6" at best next to 6'1" keanu Reeves, but you see his shoes in this scene and he has massive heels.
I wouldn't bother with a peak height. I think he's about 5'5" like he's always been. If I gave a peak height and current it'd be 5'5.5" peak and 5'5" current, but I don't see a difference. It doesn't change the fact that Pacino is a living legend. He's made many classic movies, had many diverse roles that he played amazingly well and is the greatest actor ever to me. But probably never a full 5'6", and probably still not under 5'5" even today.
Silent d said on 23/Sep/12

Sam said on 28/Sep/11
Speaking as a 6'5" movie fan, I disagree that (what you seem to be saying) an actors' stature has any bearing on their acting talent or presence. Pacino in the 70s gave several great performances: Serpico, The Godfathers, Dog Day Afternoon, or even more recent films like Glengarry Glen Ross, no one else could have done those roles as well...I'd only agree that in Scarecrow he was miscast. The only Pacino scene where his diminutive size actually put me off a scene was in Heat when he beat up the much more strapping Henry Rollins character.
PatB said on 27/Sep/11
I'm sorry that my remerks about Pacino upset some others, but Pacino is not a very good actor and a lot of that preceeds directly from his height - or lack thereof.
Wallace Shawn is tall enough for the parts he plays. So is Danny DeVito. So is The Rock and so was John Wayne. The problem is that Pacino usually plays tough guys and he looks ridiculous. He was much better in Donnie Brasco where he played an underling. But in Heat and Rightous Kill he plays a lead character whereas he's a natural sidekick.
Pacino became famous in the Godfather films. Remember in that plot he is considered not to be a full blown mobster at first. He's the sweet little kid protected by the large scary mobsters. Then he volunteers to kill Sollozzo. Everyone is amazed. That's the drama. The smallest and youngest of the sons turns out to be the toughest and smartest son and ultimately his father's sucessor. Pacino was nearly perfect for that role and that plot. But alas he's much less than perfect for most other movie roles because of his size. He's a tiny, slight guy and now he's a tiny, slight and old guy.
Watch him in Heat. He chews up the scenery. He's playing the leader of an elite police squad made up of normal size cops. He compensates by continuously overacting. No character in that film refers to him as stumpy, or shorty. They act as if he were a normal size cop. Big city street cops used to have to be six feet tall. A cop his age and his size would be remarked upon by his peers.
Pacino cannot play comedy. He was embarassing in Scarecrow, not funny. He can't play drawing room, or board room either, much less musicals. He has been typecast as an ethnic criminal (or cop) and almost all of his famous roles are within that narrow compass. Even that other short actor who was also typecast as a gangster - James Cagney - had some physicality. If Pacino hit you he looks like he'd break his hand.
Pacino shot to fame playing a small civilized guy who improbably becomes a mob leader. He's been too small for almost every role he's played since.

She was told he looks taller on film because they put lifts in his shoes, this way he was at least even with Diane Keaton. I don't care if the man were to be 5'1, his talent is unmeasurable! Just like Elvis being the King of Rock, and M.J. the king of pop, Al Pacino is the King of acting... hmmm or the Godfather...lol have a good one all!

PatB, what the hell is your problem? Pacino was great in many movies post-Godfather - The Devil's Advocate, Donnie Brasco, Scent of a Woman, Angels in America and most recently You Don't Know Jack - which he just won an emmy and Golden Globe for! So Suck on that...
Back on topic, I say Al is around 5'4 now and 5'6 in his prime...He is very slight built so it makes him look smaller. But it doesn't matter how tall he was/is, he still towers over most men in terms of talent, looks, and charisma:)
Neil McDougall said on 16/Jan/11
PatB, I don't know what you mean by "too slight to be inducted"? Audie Murphy was 5'5" and 110lbs when he enlisted. I don't think he did too badly? He was only the most decorated American soldier of World War II.
Will said on 16/Jan/11
Al Pacino has always and will be a 5'5" maximum. Not too sure of him being at 5'7" barefoot though. These days he has yet looked considerably shorter. Well, possibly due to a little shrink. He is diminutive at being only 5'4 1/2" tall.

Pacino is IMHO a pretty bad actor. He can take direction, that was clear in the first two Godfather movies. He was cast as a wormy, dirty junkie in his first movie - "Panic in Needle Park". He was firmly on the path to being a minor ethnic character actor when somehow God smiled on him and he got the lead in the Godfather. Coppola gave him dignity and gravitas. He was never so good again.
He fit in the Godfather cast because the actor they wanted to play Sonny was James Caan. Sonny in the book is a very large scary person - probably 6'3" or so. But Caan was about 5'9" - about a half foot too short. Michael in the book is described as an average sized person - maybe 5'9". But with a 5'9" Sonny they needed a 5'3" Michael actor. Michael in the book was a war hero. Al Pacino is probably to slight to be inducted. I don't remember seeing any guys as small as Pacino when I was in the army.
A good actor is a versatile actor. Consider Kevin Kline. He can play heavy drama - "Sophie's Choice" or comedy - "A Fish Called Wanda". He can play the romantic lead or a supporting part. Hell! he can sing and dance too.
Pacino in contrast can only play ethnic mobsters. Luckily for him ethnic mobster movies became very, very popular. So nowadays we have this tiny overacting seventy year old character actor cavorting with women young enough to be his grandaughter and dukeing it out with large strong young men.
There are no spoofs of Pacino movies - he's ridiculous enough as he is.

Coppola wanted to cast Pacino in The Godfather. Producer Robert Evans was dead set against it. "A runt will not play Michael," Evans told Coppola. In addition to Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman, James Caan (who stood at an average 5'9") was among those auditioning for the Oscar-nominated role. In Evans' 1994 memoir, The Kid Stays in the Picture, he describes a tense negotiation process involving door-slamming and remarks, such as, "This ain't Mutt and Jeff. This kid Pacino's five five, and that's in heels."

Yo Tellem, about your ignorance post in January; The average male height might well be 5 9 now, but it was NOT that in the 1700's! At the turn of the century (1900 or so) average male height was 5 4 or 5 5. Improved nutrition has increased this over the last 100 years. Thats why if you go into 200-400 year old houses (i live in the UK, so we have those!) the ceilings seem ridiculously low.
guyfrommars said on 14/Jun/09
In the old days of Hollywood nearly every male actor wore lifts. Leading men had to look tall next to their partners, guys like Bogart did almost everything from camera angles to huge platform shoes to look bigger. In the generation change of the late 1960s - early 1970s when people like Pacino, Dustin Hoffmann or Peter Falk became stars it wasn't a huge disadvantage for these "average guys" to be short anymore. Of course action heroes like Tom Cruise, Stallone or
Mel Gibson still suffered from being short and stayed with the htradition of huge lifts.

In the film people i know 5ft 6-7 kim basinger looked a good inch and a bit taller than pacino and they were both in normal flat footwear. I say around the 5ft 5 mark at the lowest without shoes. In scarface hes wearing cowboy type boots in almost all the scenes and he could get away with 5ft 7 in boots.

Glenn: I think seeing him at 5'6.5 was an illusion as well (or he was wearing more decent lifts which are not easily detectable). I analyzed him thoroughly in his last movies and he looks 5'5.5 max these days. Could have been 5'6" in his youth but not sure.

Sometimes I swear Al looks 5-5 max. In the Godfather he was just towered by a 5-10 James Caan by probably 5 inches. I've heard people speculate that Caan wore lifts, but it's a known fact that Pacino did as well in that film.
Then what also fuels my short theories are the fact that Sean Penn barefoot was taller than Pacino in 2" cowboy boots in Carlito's Way! How tall is Penn? 5-7 or 5-8? Not to mention that in 2" or 2.5" heels Pacino still looked tiny in Scarface. Even with the heels I could swear he looked 5'4", 5'5" sometimes! For years I thought Steven Bauer was huge because of how he towered over Pacino. Then in the Devil's Advocate even with some huge shoes, 6-1 Keanu Reeves looked nearly a head taller than him.
I have no problem with 5'6" for Al, but sometimes he really struggles with that height. Regardless of height he may be my favorite actor though, so this is nothing against him. He just looks really short, shorter than 5'6" a lot of times. He did look possibly 5'7" in ...And Justice For All, though I don't remember his footwear.
glenn said on 16/Apr/09
thanks ema,but al is 5-6.not me.if thats what you meant.he has heels on above and i still tower him.that would make him 5-3,5-4.which is not possible.unless you meant him.it kinda sounds like you meant him.but the way people have been attacking my height lately,im not sure.

Has anyone else noticed that Pacino is a guy who doesn't seem to have lost a noticeable amount of height despite his age? He seemed in the 5-5, 5-6 range in movies back in the 70's and he still does at movies and premieres.
Doug said on 1/Apr/09
I always thought Pacino a similar height to Hoffman, was around 5'6", now around 5'5", he is probably actually a little taller than Hoffman ever was by half an inch?. Unless he was wearing lifts he looks easily 5'6" next to Glenn. I'd estimate 5'5.5" nowadays, Hoffman was little over 5'5" when I met him in 97'.

I'd say 5'5'' at best even in the early days. You have to take into account the average height in the 60's and 70's for a man was 5'7" and he was below average then. DiNero looked average or above back then, and now he skews short.
These kind of posts just tick me right off. Such ignorance. Average height in the 60-70s was like 5'8" 1/2 maybe even 5'9" flat and thats been the average height since the 1700's or so up until about the 90s where average male height when up to about 5'10" maybe slightly under. in the movie 88 minutes in dress shoes (and god knows what inside it) he looked barely 5'6.
my take : 169-170cm before the 90s, 168-169cm late 90s and now 166-167 2000+ that's where he really seemed to shrink.
timeless actor, many excellent movies and only a couple of average ones, his presence always lifted any bad movie above average.

New Story that points Pacino never being over 5'5 - 5'6 ! ... The other day I was reading " The 35 year anniversary of The Godfather " and in the book you can clearly see FULL SHOTS of these pics ...
Click HereClick HereNow , Im telling you all Brando and Pacino both had very normal looking dress shoes on ... Really , adding NOTHING over about 0.5 - 2cm ... NO WAY LIFTS for both ! With that being said Brando was a legit 5'10 or Pacino was not even 5'6 at his peak ! ... Also John Cazale shoes looked very normal BUT James Cann shoes looked funny ... Looked like it added about 2 inches of heels !
Really though , Those pics show the TRUE height between Brando and Pacino ... You have to see the book for yourself ! The REAL lift wearer was James Cann !

had the chance to see him from a distance of around 3 meters, he had these strange looking dress shoes the heels looked quite elevated and he was walking funny somehow, with all these extras he didn't look anything over 170cm, this was in 2006 in Madrid Spain.
i'm quite sure he isn't any taller than 165cm these days, in his prime he used to look 168 or maybe 169cm on a good day, so the listing is correct anyway. ;)

The man did appear quite tiny in all 3 Godfathers, Scarface, Scent of a Woman and many others. I say peak height 5'5"-5'6".
leonari said on 21/Dec/07
Nicola: you are wrong. The man never was a full 5'7". My guess is 5'6" was his peak height. Now more 5'5-5'5.5"
glenn said on 21/Dec/07
rob has this wrong.this was late 1993.
Nicola said on 20/Dec/07
Maybe now, 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) is his exact height, but i think before he was taller than 5'6", maybe 5'6,5"(169 cm) or 5'7"(170 cm) was his peak height.

5'4"? Ehhh. I'm going with 5'5".

This is a very sweet photo. Mr. Pacino seems rather timeless.

Al Pacino is about 5'5" and he is my favourite actor.
He is not a 193cm long beanpole.

If you look at the scene in scarface when Tony Montana goes to Bolivia and they are sitting eating lunch, you can see that he is wearing shoes with a substancial lift, at least 2 inches of heel alone.

Just watched a recording from AFI where they honored AL. Man Sean Penn looks tall next to Pacino!!! In my opinion Pacino was a weak 5'6" peak height in his youth. Today he is much much closer to 5'5". That shows that a small guy can have enormous screen presence... And even though AL is shorter than most men he is 7 feet tall when the director yells action. Amazing artist.

I've been watching a lot of this legend of an actors movies recently and I gotta say that is dwarfed by almost everybody in every scene. I think that he stands maybe around 165cm without shoes but can't see him being any taller than 5ft 7in even in platforms. No matter what height he is, there's only on Al Pacino/Tony Montana
