In the 2008 book promo photo above, Ashley is wearing the black top, skirt, and platform heels. Mary-Kate is in the champagne outfit with open-toed ankle boots.

For anyone wondering, they're not identical but sororal twins. All four oldest Olsen siblings used to look very similar.

The slightly taller twin gets 4ft11.75. There were a couple of twins at my school with pale blonde wavy hair and I befriended them, and felt honoured that they accepted my friendship. One of my teachers, a Miss Bothwell, reckoned the girls were identical twins but it's hard to say really. Their faces were the same, sure, but Julia was about 2" taller than Angela! Twins are SO fascinating! 🌞

I’m 4’10” and am certain they’re both under 5 foot. In one photo in particular of Mary Kate and Ashley, they’re standing alongside average height women and they appear to be no taller than my height and my sister's height. From this particular photo, I’d say Mary Kate is 4’9” to 4’10” and Ashley is 4’10 to 4’11”, neither are 5 foot. My little sister is 4’9” and she looks about the size of Mary Kate when standing next to my 5’5” daughter. I don’t understand why so many actors/singers/entertainers insist on lying about their height... it’s as though they think they’ll be more acceptable at a taller height while not realizing that they’re contributing to discrimination against smaller individuals. Celebrities, because of their fame, have the opportunity to influence our society to a certain degree (think Kim Kardashian’s positive influence of a curvier body image, however unnatural in her case). By claiming to be several inches taller than they actually are, smaller than average celebrities are further stigmatizing short stature and are contributing to the discrimination that we already experience. I can say that there absolutely exists societal discrimination against those of us who are small and it’s made worse by celebrities who choose to misrepresent their height which translates to negative connotations of short stature. I’ve witnessed some positive changes in the way in which our society views “plus size” individuals and celebrities have had a lot to do with this positive change. In my experience, we’re still a long way off in regards to the way our society views, accepts, and celebrates smaller statured individuals and celebrities who choose to lie about their height are moving us further and further away from a world in which small stature is accepted and celebrated. At 46 years of age, I’ve learned to disregard those who make tacky, ignorant comments about my height and will often turn the question back onto them by gently asking them how they’d feel if someone mockingly asked them their height, their weight, what size shoe they wear, etc. I’m glad to say that most have apologized for their thoughtless remarks and have even thanked me for offering them a new perspective on the way they see small people. I’m also guilty of carelessly remarking on someone’s size as I once saw a man who had to be well over 7 foot tall and I asked him how tall he was, naively assuming he’d state his tall height proudly. I was surprised- and embarrassed- when he refused to answer my question and, instead, asked me my height. It was obvious from his response and body language that he too had been asked that question many times and that he’d also experienced discrimination and judgement because of his height. I apologized to him and walked away but it was a valuable lesson in considering the perspectives of every individual person before making assumptions about them and definitely before voicing those assumptions.

Ah! I think identical twins are an absolute treat for the eyes! Two people exactly the same - magical!
I didn't know whether to pick Ashley or Mary-Kate, so I did a bit of a toss-up, as it were! The girls are much the same in the height department, as well as everything else! I've never noticed any difference when I've seen them photographed together, and that's been quite a few times over the years! I'd go for 4ft11.25 for Mary-Kate, the supposedly smaller of the two, though I can't see it myself!

Emma's platforms look near the same height as Mk's heels. MK's heels are slightly taller than Ashley's and it gives her some height. Judging from the photo's and personal accounts I'd say MK = 4'9"-4'10" and Ashley = 4'10"-4'11"

They have also stated in a couple of interviews that at most they are 5 feet but probably not even that.

In their movie 'When in Rome' both the Olsen twins look alot taller than 5'1. They look around 5'4 and 5'5. But in 'Winning London' they both look 5 feet at the most. So I don't know if they're short or average but they're certainly not tall.

I've been following this debate and "someone who knows" never stated that AO said she was 5 ft. 2 but that Oprah calculated it as such and AO then stated that she wasn't. I remember because I agreed with her/him, that poster, and that MKO agreed to being about 5 or 5 ft. 1 and then wasn't sure. That Oprah episode was taped before they were 18 because their father was there as their guardian and MK was yet to go to rehab for anorexia which is why their size was being questioned.
Oh, and AO played the elder sister card even though it is just a 2 minute difference.
They have small builds but that doesn't make them a definite to be at any height because people of all builds come in various heights.
They look around 5 ft. 1ish & 5 ft. 0ish to me, especially on their latest Oprah visit.

5'1 sounds right for her. In the New York Minute premiere pictures, the twins & Candace are wearing similiar heels, and Ashley is standing right next to her. You can't see entirely how they're standing, but it seems like they're standing straight.. Ashley is a bit taller than Candace, so I'd think Ashley is around 5'1, but not 5'2 yet. Also, I doubt they're under 5'0.

Ashley is barely 5' - maybe a half-inch taller if she stands up straight (but she and Mary-Kate tend to slouch). They are both so cute in person, though.

I don't know where you're getting that from, Brynn. Even in the pic you posted she looks just a tad smaller. MK might be 4'11" and Ash 5', but I don't think Ash is below 5'. I think those heights might even maybe be more accurate, because next to Kelly Osbourne MK looked at least 2" smaller. Also, next to Drew Barrymore Ash looked about 3" smaller and they were in similar heels. Maybe they've grown, as they were only 17 back then, who knows?

ow yeah? I thought she was 5 ft and mary-kate was 4-11. My friend met them, she is 5 ft 1 and they were smaller than she. I could be wrong..but actually I don't think so. They are really smal..and mary-kate looks like a child next to that old dude!! They can't me 5 ft and 5 ft 1. Pictures can sometimes be deceiving. In some pictures MK even appears to be taller than Ash.

In that Oprah interview, just before Ashley was asked the question of height, weren't they discussing MK's kissing scene and the fact that she had to stand on on box to kiss him due to the height difference? MKI mentioned something about being 5, 5 ft. 1 or so and then Oprah then asked Ashley if she was about an inch taller and that would make her 5 ft. 2 when Ashley made the comment about not being 5 ft. 2?

Ash likes to play up the shortness while MK would like to be taller. MK is just a bit over 5 ft. 0 and Ashley is a little bit over 5 ft. 1.

I know they say they're an inch apart, but I see very little difference. I think Mary-Kate is 5' 0" and Ashley is 5' 0.5". They are 1/2" apart, it seems.
