Rob, is Earl Holliman eligible for a page?
The once “six feet and handsome” THE RAINMAKER star, has just died aged 96, and I thought a page would be a fitting tribute to this talented actor.

Yes, I'll give him a page.

Hey Rob,
Hope all's well! Can you please add more noir actors? There are some great ones that could be added for movie buffs.
Dennis O'Keefe (was in some absolute classic/cult film noirs and gets listed as 6ft 2). Could be near or?
John Hodiak - just watched Somewhere in the Night and I really think he could look quite tall overall. He was comfortably taller than Conte.
Frank Lovejoy
Jack Lambert - often turned up as heavy, such as in Kiss Me Deadly. Looked tall.

I have costner 6´1 1/8. This guy was 6´1 range at peak. the 183,8 average must be atleast 1 cm to low at most 2 cm.

I worked with Burt Lancaster for many years and as a young man working next to him I cannot believe how Hollywood lies about how tall he was he was very very short he was 5'6" and the props were running boards on the ground that made him 6 inches taller than what he really was

After having seen several times The Leopard (1962) I think something is wrong between Delon and Lancaster, the height shown in celebheight of one of them is clearly wrong and in this photo it is clearly seen. On average between the line of the eyes and the end of the head there are about 10-12 centimeters and here it is clearly seen that if Delon is 178 cm tall , Lancaster is more than 185 cm. Personally I think that Delon is less than 178 cm.

Actually, 6 feet peak for Lancaster would better explain the one inch height difference between him and lift wearing Kirk Douglas at the ‘58 oscars and I doubt that Lancaster was as tall as Lee Marvin, who is now listed as 6’1” on celebheights too. Perhaps, Lancaster had a Richard Harris height situation and was closest to 6’0.5”, although I would have given Lancaster the edge over Harris in The Cassandra Crossing. Lancaster definitely was not over 6’1” though.

After having seen him next to Heston and Cooper I'd bet he was more like 6 feet tall. In the picture posted by Gonzalo Heston might have like 2.75 inches on him. I would also take into consideration Lancaster was 10 years older than Heston, but anyway if Heston was 6'2.5 there's no way I'd give Mr. Burt 6'1". This height is obviously a bit inflated in my opinion, more like 1.82 next to Heston and most likely 6'0" in his prime.

I guess you guys have probably seen this photo before. A bit unusual, Errol Flynn flanked by Mitchum and Lancaster who have been somewhat de-masculinized. How many beers would take to find either of them attractive? I think you'd pass out before you hit the required threshold if one even existed. LOL. A nice fail safe mechanism. Determining footwear of the "fairer" two and accounting for same is obviously a bit problematic.

Much to my surprise he invited me over to his home nearby, where we talked about his films with Lancaster and their circus career. Cravet was very open and candid, and mentioned that Burt, because of his 6'1" height, had to bend his knees when doing spins on the high bar, as an acrobat. Wonderful memory.

I adore this actor and what an actor he was. Brad Pitt is a 2 compared to Burt in my mind. When I was a child I would watch old films with my dad which included every single Landcaster film ever made!! To this day I am grateful to my father for that. I like to think of him as my fantasy husband (NO I am not psycho). I am drawn to his strong acting abilities from being a lady's man to a odd truck driver in love with Rose, in "the Rose Tattoo," His harsh character in "
One of my favorite films is "The Seimmer" which many of my friends just don't get. I think it was one of his best performances. I loved him in "Elmer Gantry" and "The Rainmaker." I mean who is this guy? The first movie I saw was, "Trapeze" and I was hooked! He was physically fit in all of his films and I hate to say it but for me, a perfect specimen of a man.Of course I never had the chance to meet him. I was born in 1961 and my brain was not developed enough to grasp his talent until well after his death.
My guess he was and still is 6ft 2inches tall!! In addition the most handsome man God ever made!!!

I agree with James somewhat...I don't think that Burt was at anytime in his life 6 ft 1 inch in bare feet (with shoes on, yeah, sure 6 ft 1 (185 cm) but to me that's cheating)...but then again Lancaster could be a physically imposing man, maybe slightly taller than a dead on 6 feet 0 inches (183 cm) tall...I'm betting that he was actually closer to 6 ft 0.5 inches (184 cm) tall and I'm talking absolute peak height here, NOT when the great man was in his 70s/80s & was closer to 5 ft 11 inches tall. I love his acting &, outside of acting, all the work he did for blacks & other ethnic minorities - just wish I could have met him. My mother's favourite actor was Gregory Peck (she thought that he was the most handsome man ever) but mine was definitely Lancaster.

Many comments suggested he LOOKED about 6 feet in height. If thats the case his height would be 5 foot 10 to 5 foot 11 inches based on the height of shoes giving the appearance of a taller man. Looking a certain height and actually being a height is 2 completely different things. Burt Lancaster looked tall but he wore Big boots in his movies. If his heel was 3 inch boot heel than a 6 foot looking male can indeed be 5 foot 9 flat foot. In that case hes average height.

I wonder if he popped on lifts to appear opposite Costner in Field of Dreams, I find it hard to believe he'd still be dead-even with Costner around the age of 80 with a clearly curved spine. There's a few photos of Lancaster hanging with Clark Gable and Gable looks the same height or even possibly a fraction higher. Gable could look as weak as a six foot even but maybe Gable pulled a footwear advantage on the younger star in those (I know Gable wasn't adverse to height trickery after his appearance in The Tall Men compared to Robert Ryan).

Lancaster was in the same rough height class as Lee Marvin in The Professionals, which made him tall. What is interesting about that is that he was once a circus acrobat. That would be a vocation where being tall would be a disadvantage, but you can see Lancaster swinging in circles on a horizontal flag pole in The Flame and the Arrow. That would have taken quite a bit of strength for anyone over six feet tall. A very gifted guy, and obviously intelligent, as in fact most movie stars are.
Sam said on 20/Jun/14
I thought he was fairly good in Birdman of Alcatraz but its definitely one of those Stanley Kramer-type message movies that aged not-so-well, they seemed prevalent in the late 50s/early 60s. It would have been interesting to see a gritty, violent Birdman remake in the 70s with Gene Hackman being directed by someone like Friedkin, Scorsese or Coppola, which would not skimp on the brutal side of the character.

On the other hand, like a lot of successful guys, he could be a real SOB and was a womanizer and generally bad to his wife. I'm convinced that Cooper was taller than six three. Perhaps closer to six four.
Think about it. Like Rock Hudson, Cooper always appeared taller than all the men in his films. He was a good two inches talker than six foot two Lon Cheney Jr. And if Tony Perkins was really six two then Coop was six four because he was a solid two inches talker than Perkins in Friendly Persuasion.
So if Coop was six four, and three inches taller than Lancaster, Burt was six one.

Not seen that film in yonks though, I can't remember how he looked, but as I say I get a very similar height impression in his prime to Reagan and Grant. 6'0.5" is possible for his peak don't you think?
Editor Rob
yeah it's that film
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jun/13
Doesn't even look close to a real 6'2" in Vengeance Valley Frenchman. Charlton Heston looked a lot bigger. Lancaster looks about the same height as Cary Grant and Reagan weak 6'1" I think. 6'0.5"-6'1" looks about right. He reminds me a bit of a John Schneider from Smallville facially.

Rob can you update his films Rob, known for films like From Here to Eternity, Marty, Trapeze, Sweet Smell of Success, Elmer Gantry, Birdman of Alcatraz and Atlantic City.
Watching Vengeance Valley right now, haven't been watching so many films of late as I've been enjoying the sunshine!

I'll give him a photo, I noticed an article talking about stand ins for Shoeless Joe, the casting was wanting James Earl Jones (6ft 1.5, 235 pounds), Kevin Costner (6ft and 165 pounds) and Burt Lancaster (6ft, 189 pounds)

Frenchman in regard to your post, your way off. Delon is nowhere near 5ft11.5, I woulnt be so sure if I were you. Next to Charles Bronson and Jane Fonda he was barely taller. The most I will give him will be my exact height which is 5ft9.5.
Frenchman said on 1/Jun/13
Burt Lancaster was 6ft2 (188 cm)at his peak. When I watch a movie I always make comparisons between actors. I know it is tricky or misleading because of the camera angle or else, but I am 66 years old and I have done that for so many years that I have come to reliable conclusions. As for Alain Delon, he is either 181 or 182 (a good 5ft11,5 at his peak). I am sure of that too.

I am a big Alain Delon fan. However, his height has always puzzle me. I grew up with his films as a little kid In Cuba. There is one film in particular called Honor Among Thieves with Charles Bronson, and Delon is one inch taller. So if Bronson is 5.8 then Delon cant be any taller than 5.9. Rob if you get information about his height it will be highly appreciated. Thanks.
Editor Rob
near 5ft 10 I thought was possible, but I too wasn't sure so haven't yet added him until I watched some of his stuff.

In Vera Cruz with Gary Cooper (where Burt outshone Cooper in every scene in my opinion), Burt seemed a full three inches shorter than Cooper. Cooper has always been listed as 6 ft 3 & nothing more, so my guess is that Burt was a 6 footer & nothing more.
ArjunaKorale said on 8/May/13
Burt was one of my favourite actors...makes today's cool guys like Tome Cruise look like wimps! I've seen him in many films & I always pegged him out as 184 - 183 cm (dead on 6 feet or half an inch over). I really don't think that he was anything over this.
Clint said on 5/Jan/13
Probably you're right, Sam. Actually there are some sites that list Delon 5.10, the official 182 looks a bit too much for him. Moreover, I have seen a pic of Burt colse to Gary Cooper (6.3-6.4), who looks about 2 or 3 inches taller than him. Definitely, 185-186 seems accurate for Burt.
Ps: why isn't Delon listed on this site?
Sam said on 4/Jan/13
I've seen that movie, Clint. Lancaster did look considerably taller. However, I think Delon's listed height is slightly exaggerated. Next to 5'7" Monica Vitti, in L'eclisse he is scarcely taller when she is in heels. Delon's probably a strong 5'10" nothing more.
Clint said on 2/Jan/13
In the movie "Il Gattopardo" by Luchino Visconti, Lancaster looks much taller than Alain Delon, who is listed about 182. I'd say he looks about three inches taller than Delon, definetly around 190, do you see it possible Rob?
Copnovelist195 said on 9/Nov/12
I would say Lancaster was 6ft1 even into old age, possibly 6ft2 at his peak. Always prided himself on his physical fitness into his sixties when his health completely broke down; he even almost died during a gallstone operation. Just goes to show it's what's in your genes at the end of the day. He spent the last twenty years of his life in pretty poor health despite a lifetime's daily fitness regime and being a former acrobat.

Burt Lancaster was not 6 feet tall. I knew Burt back in the 50s and was on the set when he did a comedy sketch with Jerry & Dean. They all were barefoot in a bedroom scene, and they all were the same height. And it is well known Jerry and Dean were both 5 feet 10 inches tall!

Burt looks taller than average and somewhat slender. Could there be a more intersting love scene than his and Debra Kerr's(how tall was Debra?) in From Here to Eternity? From some of the still photos he was huge next to Sinatra and Cliff.( of course they were mice)Lancaster was a wonderful screen personality and actor and should not be forgotten.

Burt was 6'1.5" at the start of his career about 1946, and this is apparent in scenes with his regular co-star way back then, 6'2" Wendell Corey. In the 1970's as he entered his 60's he was still 6'1". A very fit guy, being a former acrobat.

Rising, I agree with your comments on the Montgomery Clift page. I believe Clift was most likely no taller than 5'8.5" . 5'10" is a definite stretch for Clift. If Clift is more like 5'8.0-5'8.5", then Lancaster would have been more like 6'0-6'0.5" rather than 6'1" in From Here To Eternity. Although he still wasn't very old , by the mid-1960's he sometimes could appear as if he was slightly under 6'0".
RisingForce said on 10/Jun/09

In " The Professionals ", 1966, with Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Ralph Bellamy , Jack Palance and Woody Srode, I would put Lancaster at no more than 6'0", possibly a hair under. There is a scene where Lancaster throws Ryan over his shoulder ( as Ryan's character is fainting from the desert heat ). Ryan , who at age 56/57 was probably 6'3" to 6'3.5", was substantially taller than Lancaster, at least three inches, maybe more.
Also, in watching "From Here to Eternity" a while back, I got the impression that Burt was maybe 6'0" or 6'0.5" rather than a true 6'1".

When Burt appeared on Martin and Lewis colgate show he didn't seem six one.maybe,5'11 and a bit.they all had their shoes off at various times in the sketch, its very interesting.5' 10" jerry, seems almost as tall as Burt, when both have shoes on.At the end of show they all stand together.Burt seems around 2 inches taller than jerry,if jerry moved to the left in Burts position.Dean seems about the same or taller than Burt, but of course Dean was wearing lifts.I"d say Burt in his bare feet was more likely 6ft or slightly less.

Talker, actually in Adieu L'ami Delon consistently looks 1-1.5" taller then a good postured Bronson. I believe Bronson at 5'8" gives Delon 5'9.5". In the movie Scorpio, Lancaster is about 3" taller then Delon. Therefore, I give Lancaster 6'0.5"
sam said on 20/Jul/07
I believe that Lancaster is the 6'1", as listed. He was a big, buff kind of guy, but Kate Buford's book listed him as 6'1" and he did look almost 2 inches shorter than an aging (6'3" peak) Gary Cooper in Vera Cruz. Talk of him in lifts I highly doubt, since he always mocked Kirk Douglas's lifts and, so I read, once hid them as a prank, causing Douglas to become so angry he cried.

He looks tall in most films and mainly during his early career; In "from here to eternity", he looks tall but when facing Monty Cliff, not that!
He was probably between 6 and 6'1 tops and was still clearly taller than 5'11/5 . Delon in "scorpio" though being close to 60.
Again a man looking tall because of his "prince" personality first and then of how well proportioned and slender ha was until 1969 (before his heart attack).

I met David Niven many years ago (we're talking mid-1970s). I was surprised at how tall he was - easily 6'2" as I am 5'10" and looked considerably up at him. He looks very slender on film, but in person there was much more to his frame.

What wouldn't I have given to be blessed with a physique like his.

Burt stood tall in several of his films, especially Seven Days in May. In fact he stood so tall playing that crazed general that Kirk Douglas had to go into his closet and find his biggest lifts to wear for that film. On the set Burt constantly kidded Kirk about his lifts which didn't thrill Kirk in the least, but had the crew in stitches. I got that from the guy who edited the film.
Superman said on 20/May/06
If you watch Burt Lancaster in any of the movies he made he never stands tall. He's always leaning forward which give him something of a stoop. Watch him with Dean Jagger in Elmer Gantry. When he stands up straight he's the same height as Jagger. Then if you watch King Creole you see Jagger towers above 6' Elvis.

Lawford was routinely listed at being well-over six feet. MGM publicity listed him at 6'1". Then I read somewhere that he was 6'2" which I knew from watching Ocean's Eleven just wasn't true. In that film, Lawford was three inches shorter than 6'2" Cesar Romero who I had met many times since he was good friends with my parents. Then I met Lawford and noticed he was exactly my height so I knew I was correct. But Burt was tall, at least six one. I remember looking up in order to speak to him. With Lawford we were at eye level.
Frank2 said on 26/Apr/06
Well, Burt wasn't wearing lifts that day. That I remembered. The reason was I was checking out Peter Lawford's expensive black velvet Gucci's which had gold embroidery on the front and Lawford wore no socks which was sort of an in thing back then. Burt was right next to him and was wearing normal loafers. And he was at least 6'1", which means 6'2" in his shoes.
Now I stood next to him and spoke with him. Did you ever meet him?
Frank2 said on 26/Apr/06
There's no way that Deborah was 5'7". But Burt was taller than me when I met him and taller than Peter Lawford who was my height and at the same location. I saw the two standing next to one another and Burt was at least two inches taller, perhaps even three.

In my first post photo of this page, take a meter and measure both Burt and Deborah on your computer screen. Its easy since both are standing straight.Measure Burt's front foot and Deborah's back foot. You'll find that Burt is 14cm and Deborah 13.2cm.If Deborah was 5'7"(1.70m)doing a little math you'll see that Burt was around 1.80m maybe just a little more.

I think Burt was a solid 6'2" when he was young and dropped an inch or two as he got older. He was nearly as tall as 6'3" Walter Matthau in The Kentuckian and in that film Burt wore moccasins while Matthau wore boots. Walter lost an inch to an inch and a half as he got older, but was a strong 6'3" when he started his film career.

Frank - Thanks for posting the pictures of Burt with Nick Cravat. Burt looks to me at most a head taller than Nick, rather than a foot taller. So if Burt was 6'1 (which I think was his minimum height) that would put Nick at 5'4/5'5?
What do you think?
Frank2 said on 24/Apr/06
Cat? I thought it was a silver fox! The last time I saw Tony was at a book store in Century City. He was wearing what I call an "Orson Welles getup" meaning he was all in black. Tony is now on the heavy side and black tends to make a fat person look thinner, or so they say. He still looked fat to me. Tony wore these funky black pumps with two inch heels and was slightly mincing around in them. I'd say he was about 5'9" with those shoes. So now he's probably 5'7" barefoot. But he is over 80 so he's entitled to shrink a bit.

I saw his suit and his boots and the boots didn't have lifts in them. No lifts are apparent when watching the show. The actor who played Superman who did wear huge lifts was Kirk Allan. I have a book on Superman which shows him wearing those lifts. I'll copy it, email it to Rob to post.

Frank2 - you have George Reeves listed at 6'2" below. His height has been discussed by Superman fans on the official Yahoo discussion group. Reeves' autospy was all over the board with 4 instances of 6 foot 1 of 6'1" and 2 of 5'11".
Supposedly Reeves' Superman boots were fitted with 2 inch lifts.
