Rob, would 5’11.5” suffice more?

He wore some big footwear in films, and I would rule out 6ft for him.
Editor Rob
I kept him at 11.75 as I thought he seemed between 11.5 to 6ft range generally.

Truly mesmerising actor.

He appeared strikingly tall in Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. Could appear an easy 184 cm. 5ft 11.75in minimum.

Volonte could look pretty tall overall, Sinclair. And I think he was. He used to get 6ft 1 ½ listings actually and was 6ft 0 here for a long time. I think a solid 182 cm fits. Could have been the full 6ft 0.
Sinclair said on 8/Jun/22
He often came across as a strong, slender 5’11” to me. Perhaps more 5’11” than 6’0” but he could still pass for six feet in Spaghetti Westerns. Apparently, Volonte claimed 182cm, so I’m voting 5’11.5”.

6-0. 3” difference to Clint so yeah pretty much a six footer

Here the mentioned clip in the comment by Pippo, complete (5 minutes): Click Here Look: all the actors barefoot. Mastroianni towers, with his approximately 176 cm (real, and not boasted as many people do, "approximating" to 6' - so the great doubts about statistics, not based on anthropological systems, if I may say so!) over most of the present. Look at Volonté: he is exactly the same height without footwear, if not slightly lower (and taller of the most part of the present).

Easy 182/183 cm. Tall guy. Powerful on-screen presence.
Pippo said on 28/Feb/22
In Elio Petri's 'Todo modo' there is a long scene with Volonté and Mastroianni walking barefoot and close. Mastroianni was fairly tall, a real 176-176.5 cm (5'9.3). Volonté the same, not more; surely not 6' and not 180 cm: Click Here

Sì, è un'esagerazione, ma 180 in quella generazione sarebbe sembrato molto solidamente alto in Italia. Sono d'accordo che spesso poteva sembrare un ragazzo di altezza media. (Yes it's an exaggeration, but 180 in that generation would have looked very solidly tall range in Italy. I agree that he could often seem like an average height guy.)

Superb actor. Incendiary and intense. Almost the personification of the spaghetti Western genre.

Yes, though I don't associate him purely with westerns, since seeing films like Christ Stopped at Eboli and Investigation of a Citizen (among the best films of the 70s) and Lady of the Camellias.

Well I guessed him at 182 too a while back!!
Andrea said on 12/Jul/20
Well, the question still is whether he really was that tall or not... I've recently rewatched Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and I still wouldn't have guessed him much above average there! Then again, he didn't look more than 3-4 inches shorter than Clint (sometimes even less)...
Andrea said on 8/Jul/20
Rob, since he gets described as 1.82 in this sort of biography about him Click Here , I "took the trouble" to contact the author of the book to ask him about that and he told me that that's the height he had on his passport (he has his personal papers), so I guess that's his official claim (and not the ridiculous 1.87 he still seems to get listed at!).
Editor Rob
That's an interesting tidbit, 182 seems honest for him.

I was watching For A Few Dollars More last night and when he stood next to Eastwood he didn't look short at all, my guess was around 6'1 (185cm).

I've just watched the Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More films, and he don't look tall to me at all. I need to have to watch the films again lol. I was thinking 5-9 or 5'10.

I think this guy would fall into the strong 6ft zone, 183/184cm. I've seen 187cm listings for him...most likely in shoes

I think it possible Leone might have given Volonte lifts in his scenes with Clint to look a bit more imposing as the baddie. Not impossible.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Jun/15
Yes, that's what I mean, he really looked near 6 ft 1 in some films, but many others he looked just 5 ft 11 range. Andrea watch A cavallo della tigre, he's max 3 inches taller than Nino Manfredi who wasn't more than 5 ft 9. In fact in one scene he's looks 2.5-3 inches taller and has boot advantage over Manfredi.
Andrea said on 21/Jun/15
After seeing him in A Fistful of Dollars, i'd say he can look about 3 inches smaller than Clint, sometimes even less, like 2.5! If Clint was really 6'4, I doubt this guy was much under 6'1! But again he doesn't look tall for being a 6'1 guy, IMO! Was everybody over 6' in these western movies, Rob?
Editor Rob
a 6ft 3.5 range Clint isn't improbable.
Arch Stanton said on 20/Jun/15
Rob I've been watching him a bit more of late and I think he consistently looks more in 5 ft 11 range seriously. I've sent some emails with diffs with him and Manfredi in which he has boot advantage but looks no more than 3inches taller and I think there's a good case for 5'8.5 for Manfredi! I'd put Volonte at 5'11.5 and just assume he had heel advantage in the Dollars films with Clint to look a bit more imposing. I suspect he might wear lifts at times, in some films he can look nearer 6 ft 1, others, particularly older ones he seems more 5'11 range.
Tunman said on 6/Jun/15
Ultimately he could look slightly over Eastwood's eyebrows which is still a little less than 4".Possibly 3.5 or 3.75 at most.A good chance that he was 6' flat though.
Actually not that surprising that he looks only 5'11 range with Gassman. As I always say 1"is nothing.Likely posture.Just remember Knepper and Statham in The Transporter.Knepper looked constantly taller by 1"even in pics.
Judd ISR said on 6/Jun/15
don't know this actor but, after have seen him next to a honest 187 cms Gassman (posted by Arch) and that IMO Eastwood never been a full 6'4" but more a 6'3-3.5" guy, i think 5'11.5-6' for this actor is better, much more than 6'0.5"...
Arch Stanton said on 5/Jun/15
He's a tough one, at times he really does look near 6 ft 1, others like with Gassman he could really seem 5'11 tops, but as I say the ground level was really uneven and posture bad in that film to really tell. 184 really seemed the best shout originally. I'll continue watching his films and see if I can find some decent comparisons, he was a great actor, intense as somebody said below.
Jake: 1.84 m- 1.85 m said on 3/Jun/15
Rob, 6ft 0.25in (184 cm) possible for him? A compromise.
Editor Rob
6ft -6ft 0.5 isn't improbable, I suppose with clint indoors in the bar he didn't look much more than 3 inches smaller, but you could argue clint wasn't at his fullest.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 3/Jun/15
Not under 6ft
Arch Stanton said on 3/Jun/15
6 ft flat would be safer for now I think, that ground is sloping considerably and Volonte isn't standing his best, but not easy to judge. I'm not convinced he was over 4 inches shorter than Clint, but he could certainly seem more 5'11" range with Gassman, as bad as it is to judge from. I'll watch a few more films and observe.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Jun/15
Rob I'm wondering if he ever wore lifts. In some films he really looks near 6 ft 1, in others he seems more 5'11 range. I know he wore Cubans in Christ at Eboli, perhaps that's why he seemed taller. It bothers me how short he looked with Gassman in that film though. I mean check out 3:20 here Click Here OK look at the ground, Gassman is a fair bit higher up and it's not a fair comparison but Gassman really looked noticeably taller I thought, more than an inch. There is a scene later on when he did look about 6 ft with Gassman and another when he looked as low as 5 ft 11 flat, but ground level again not good for telling. I have a feeling 182 might be nearer now.
ArjunaKorale said on 3/Jun/15
@Arch, I will check it out..
Arch Stanton said on 2/Jun/15
I really don't think L'Armata is a very good film for judging his height though, terrible in fact, given the sloping territory and the weird posture of both him and Gassman in it. Better to see something where he's stood his best on flat ground with another actor.
Arch Stanton said on 2/Jun/15
Mmm. In L'armata Brancaleone he's around Gassman towards the end, but never really side by side on flat ground. Gassman looks markedly taller in one scene and if anything makes Volonte look 5 ft 11 but not sure on ground level and posture, it was around castle walls and slopes so not reliable really. There's a scene near the end though where they're about to be burned at the stake and only a few feet apart Volonte did look roughly 6 ft-184, but again camera angle and ground and posture of both difficult to really judge them properly. Throughout the film he was slumped oddly, so was Gassman in a way; both looked shorter in it because of posture. Tough to call but my honest feeling would be that if Gassman was 187cm it's more likely Volonte was nearer 182cm in comparison. I still have a few of his films I want to watch and I'll post some more feedback.
Editor Rob
maybe 6ft is more realistic.
ArjunaKorale said on 2/Jun/15
Rob, I tend to strongly agree with Andrea. If you watch Volonte in his spaghetti western roles (that's all I've seen him in & the way I want to remember him), you will see that he did not give off the proportions of a big 1.84 metre man (as Andrea too states)! And he wore huge heels in those cowboy films too. Just observe him with 6 ft 2 Van Cleef (who didn't wear such massive heels - no need to, I guess) in the fight scene at the end of "For A Few Dollars More", & you will see that Volonte was much shorter. I give Volonte 5 ft 10 or 5 ft 11 at best!

And on Volonte - so, u have him down at a fraction over 6 ft...I thought that he could have been about 5 ft 10 or 5 ft 11...but, fair enough, lad, fair enough. I will never forget his mercilessly sadistic, drug-taking, yet completely pathetic, villain INDIO...the man was A GREAT ACTOR - he could make you feel a little sorry for even the nastiest of characters!

Clint was really very tall in his youth days. With rather long legs should I add.Anyways it's true that he could have been a weak 6'4 like 192-3 but really no less than that.Of course his height loss was dramatic as he struggles to look even 6' today but if we compared him with goldblum in early 70's the difference would have really small, about 0.5" probably.

At 138 minutes range in Eboli Volonte is a head taller than most of the other guys.
Arch Stanton said on 30/May/15
@Andrea and Rob, see 35-41 minutes here Click Here I think you can tell he's about this height and genuinely tall. He has on Cuban heels though which can make him seem a bit taller. He gives a 6'1" impression at times to me.

Bonacelli was also in The American with George Clooney, small world, Click Here Still looks tall pushing 80. Peak he had to have been near 6 ft 2.
Arch Stanton said on 30/May/15
Looks tall range in Christ Stopped at Eboli too, but about an inch shorter than Paolo Bonacelli. He was in Days of Sodom as well wasn't he, Now he could look 187-88 range, I think.
Arch Stanton said on 30/May/15
I guess in some scenes he could look 5 ft 11 only, others could look near 6 ft 1. Difficult to tell unless you know the heights of the other actors!
Arch Stanton said on 30/May/15
Well, there's no chance he was a legit 187-88, but I guess you could probably argue anything around 6 ft, give half an inch each way. As Rob says though he didn't look over 4 inches shorter than Eastwood, I saw between 3 and 4 inches. He also looks near this with Trintignant.
Arch Stanton said on 30/May/15

Rob, i've rewatched some scenes of that movie and he really doesn't strike me as a tall guy... Unless, most of of the people were pretty tall, of course! A 6' range italian actor would have looked quite tall, especially in the 70s... Just basing on that movie, i would have never given him more than 5'10 range!

Stop trying to badger Rob into downgrading people.

Speaking of Jean Louis Trintignant, he really deserves a page if you ask me...maybe more people are familar with him recently because of Amour. I'd agree Trintignant looked within Cruise's kind of height at peak.

I think some of the police officers in Citizen were quite tall themselves though. Not easy to tell at times though. There's no way he was over 4 inches shorter than Clint.
