Mexican director, who has made films such as Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Cronos and Pacific Rim.

In response to an old message but the plagiarism claim was about a scene in Shape of Water that apparently was a copy of a scene from the French film Delicatessen, which I saw a long time ago and enjoyed. 1 of the directors of that film complained and Del Toro got defensive rather than claim it was an homage or something. I'm still a fan of his, including I believe his least favorite of his own films, Mimic.
The Shape of Water is not bad anyway but not amongst his best. There was a version of Frankenstein that he was going to make but Del Toro is frequently given to getting excited about many projects that never come to fruition.

@Sandy Cowell
My guess is people were comparing it to The Creature from the Black Lagoon which The Shape of Water definitely takes inspiration from.

@ Tall Sam - I had no idea he was accused of plagiarism. Whose work was he supposed to have used as his own?
Personally, I think the quality of his films is quite stunning. It beats me that he would even have it necessary to ponce the material or ideas of others, in any form whatsoever.
I haven't yet seen 'Shape of Water', but I'm mesmerised every time I see 'Pan's Labyrinth'. I'm also fond of 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark', because even though it's a horror, it has a beautifully emotional, self-sacrifice conclusion in its storyline.
Cheers Sam!

No problem, Sandy. I continue to be a fan of Gulliermo, even if I wouldn't rank Shape of Water as highly as his best Spanish language films and it could be off putting his response to plagiarism claims of the film. There's always a chance he's yet to make his masterpiece.

@ Tall Sam - Why, thank you very much! I was told they were brothers ages ago, but when I saw the photos here I wondered if they could be half brothers.
Thank you most sincerely for putting me straight! 😊👍

Guillermo doesn't look much like his brother Benicio, unless this picture is inaccurate! One thing's for sure though, is that Guillermo is almost 4 inches shorter and rather stouter!
I LOVE this guy's films! They are quite, quite beautiful, but hair-raising at the same time!
He gets 5ft9.5 from me.
