Before Mahoney became an actor who spoke dialogue, he was a highly regarded stunt man, doubling for tall guys like Errol Flynn and Randolph Scott. His principal marketable skill was falling without getting injured.
One of the more amazing things you can see in many westerns (and Mahoney did a of those) is men falling off horses. (In fact, Gary Cooper got his start in the movies falling off horses.) I've got a lot of DVDs of old TV westerns, and something you often see in them is a man pretending to be a Sioux or an Apache horseman, riding a galloping horse without the benefit of stirrups. Then, miming having been shot, he throws himself off the running horse, and landing on unpadded, hard ground, sometimes while wearing only a loin cloth. There is no way this can be faked. You are actually seeing a man risk severe injury for (in the forties and fifties) a fee of a few hundred dollars.
Mahoney was so tall that he looked gangly. You are not surprised when a tough, muscular, mid-sized man like Steve McQueen moves well, but it looks strange when a long-limbed man moves quickly and gracefully.

I'm currently watching old episodes of Yancy Derringer, and one of the things you notice is how tall so many of the supporting actors on that show were. Mahoney was invariably the tallest man in every shot, but most of the other actors were within a few inches of him in height. It occurs to me that, just as shorter leading men usually worked with actors near their heights, taller leading men draw the average heights of their castmates upwards.

Recently watched Mahoney as Tarzan with 6'4'' Woody Strode and they were more or less the same height.

Jock appeared in a great episode of "Wagon Train" as the "fastest fist in the West" and towered over Ward Bond.

Stunted for Randolph Scott... and also appeared with Scott a few times. In The Nevadan he grabs Scott from behind in one scene and is clearly taller by more than an inch. In the same film he stands next to Forrest tucker and is the same height. 6'4" does seem exactly spot on. One of my childhood favorites. Loved him as The range rider.

I think many actors used risers or long heel boots foot wear to look taller. I think it is an ego thing, a taller man is a better man but that is in error. We have athletes who are very tall and have drug and abuse records. A big man is a just and honest man who is fair tempered. I know a lot of tall and short males and some are men and others are males. Big is not a prerequisite to be better.

Here's a good site with some rare photos of Jock Mahoney:

Note the one of him beside Charles Sterret (sp?), who was listed as 6'2"-6'3".
Jock looks taller. He looks more than a foot taller than the Stooges.
