Joe (original name John Graham Mellor) was born in Ankara, Turkey, in 1952. His group, The Clash, formed in 1976 and were one of the most influential New Wave/Punk bands of all and started churning out the hits as from 1977, their first being 'White Riot'. I heard their anthem 'London's Calling' during a Hollywood movie this week, the second Conjuring film, if I remember rightly. I'm pretty sure that their music has been used in other films too. After The Clash split up in 1986, Joe joined The Pogues.
Poor Joe lived for just over 50 years, dying tragically due to a congenital heart defect at Christmastide, 2002, leaving a wife and two kids. π’
5ft8.
RIP Joe Strummer π―οΈ....πΆππΆ

I thought Joe was average range like 5ft9-5ft11 while Paul Simonon and Jones were well over 6ft!

Think 5'7 range, probably 5'7.5.

In a book about The Clash, Mick Jones is listed as six feet tall, as is Paul Simonon, I believe. Only Topper Headon was shorter than Joe among the main Clash line-up.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 5/Mar/14
Rob how tall do you think fellow Clash member, Mick Jones is?
He towered over Joe. I would guess anywhere from 6ft-6ft3

I saw an article a long time ago, no idea where, that claimed Joe was 5'6", but 5'8" is definitely a better guess.

5'8 is accurate yes. I met him in 2001, I'm 5'8 and seemed around the same/slightly shorter than me on the photos we took. Mick Jones was quite a bit taller than me. Legends!

Whatever his height, he cast a long shadow.

That sounds like an awesome show. Wish I was there.

When the Clash hit the deck at Shea Stadium opening for The Who in '82 I knew I was seeing a show I'd be talking about for years....now decades.

5'10. Complete genius in every sense of the word.

Correct.5-10.

Funny thing is, I saw a site that had Strummer listed at 5'5". I never thought he was that short but never really knew how tall he was.
Brad said on 15/Aug/06
5' 10" from what I remember in '82, but he had on those "Combat" boots. He was far more talented than people gave him credit for.

I know rare cases, for example,A friend tells me he is 5-7,when he is 5-9.I sleep all day.this is shortly after waking.6pm?

I don't think he would wear lifts... but why would he put 5'8" on his license? that's what i was commenting on.
And I thought you said you were 5'8" in the morning, making you barely 5'8" through out the day, right?
Glenn said on 16/May/06
Strummer was close to 5-10.and I am 5-8.bad photo to judge.I witnessed this man many times.5-9 minimum.why would he wear lifts? his knees are bent.got it UNK?
Glenn said on 16/May/06
Strange.he appeared closer to 5-10 to me.
