John Le Mesurier's Height

English actor, best remembered for playing Sergeant Arthur Wilson in TV show Dad's Army. In film he appeared in The Pink Panther, The Italian Job and School for Scoundrels. During his career he used to list himself at 5 feet 11½ inches tall.

....but Rob, you're right - as usual! He must have been a fair chunk taller in his 20's, and pushing 6ft is a distinct possibility! I hope I am not the only one who sees people and doesn't think back to how tall they once were!
It's not done diliberately but I think this is my wake-up call into realising that when you see someone on TV in his 50's, 60's and beyond, he was likely to have been quite a bit taller a couple or more decades ago!

Editor Rob it certainly will vary between individuals. Somebody asked why I didn't give Derek Thompson a full inch 'height loss', I think from seeing him in 80's and recently, he did better than average maybe just over half inch lost, but a full inch? I'm not as sure.
It could be of course that John was giving 5ft 11.5 'in shoes', so may well have hit 5ft 10.5 as a young lad.

Editor Rob I think a guy like John lost height by his 50's, I doubt in Dad's Army days he was as tall as in his 20's.

What a great idea to put John Le Mesurier up on celebheights! As a small kid, I had no idea that he was in anything other than 'Dad's Army', so it was a surprise to find him popping up in films every so often - and rather a pleasant one! You can't help but like this gruff but somewhat naughty 'Dad's Army' member!
5ft11.5 seems too tall for him; just because the other fellows on 'Dad's Army' were small, I never thought he could pass for nearly 6ft! He clearly did!!!!! Perhaps one and a half inches smaller at a push, but 5ft10 seems a safer bet!
But, controversial that I am, I will pop another quarter inch on top! So there!
