A lot of guys lose effectiveness when they move backward. Me, I always fought better moving away than coming forward. I was six-foot-three and had long arms and the ability to pull my head back out of reach.

Viper, he's probably still at least 6ft2 and I suppose he could stretch up to 6ft2½ but I think it's likely he's not quite 6ft3 anymore. That's a definite peak though

Almost every paid athlete "usually" give themselves an extra inch or two, or more weight (depending on the sport obviously) Boxing? weight has to be accurate, although heavy weights have been known to drop 15 pounds plus between weigh-in & the actual fight time. Even middle weights can come in 10 pounds plus lighter FIGHT DAY from the weigh-in a day before (water). Always been a part of the game. How tall, in boxing ? Whatever you want ;) Anyway, Holmes was a pretty tall guy 6'2' maybe. PS Never should have battled Tyson. The lure of the $--- Was a classy guy, respected.
Johno said on 30/Sep/21
@Viper, yeah he can still look 6'2.5.

Too bad he is Hunching over to take a picture with Rob above but a peak height of 6'3 is what he likely measured at.

IMO he beats Tyson If that fight was 10 years earlier

Very Underrated Boxer, his Competition was no worse than Tyson's and he held the belt for Longer. Better Jab than Ali ( IMO).

Doesn't look much over 6'1 with Rob but he is leaning and broken down at this point. Was visibly taller than Ali when they fought.

My dad's college friends are their age and they haven't lost anything, at least nothing noticable.

Easy to compare from pictures in the 70s
viper said on 11/Apr/21
You never know. Many guys around Foreman-Holmes age have worse posture, and actually haven't shrunk at all.

When they stand up straight they are their peak height or at least right near it.

I've seen it too many times. I think shrinking overall isn't as prevalent as many think. Especially for people who didn't play sports
Canson said on 11/Apr/21
@Tall in the Saddle: yea he’s held it much better. His proportions are a bit more favorable than Foreman’s too. But Foreman really does look to have lost height. He can give off an impression of being around 6’1-6’2 or even 6’1 at times these days
Tall In The Saddle said on 9/Apr/21
@Canson

Yeah, Larry appears to have held on to his height better than Foreman. Age wise, there's less than a year separating them, GF being slightly older. Both in their 70s now.

When I was an amateur fighter back in the early 1990’s I was 6’2” and I met Larry Holmes after my fight in Canastota New York at the boxing Hall of Fame. He was 6‘3” all day long. I was shocked as I always thought he was closer to 6’1”.
Canson said on 23/Apr/20
@Editor Rob: that’s believable being he’s older. I assumed he really was closer to 6’3” based on how you had him listed although I can see with him next to you in the pic how he looks lower. However looking at his posture, it’s understandable but then again he appears to be developing a slight curvature in his upper body

6ft 2.5 range might have been possible.

Holmes was about 6"02. Boxing boots are flat, he was slightly taller than Holyfield when they fought. Holyfield and Moorer were the same height in the ring. I am an actual 6"02; I met Moorer when I boxed in Memphis in 2006 and I was 2-3 inches taller than him. I don't remember what type of shoes he had on but my boxing boots were flat, as all boxing boots are. So, Holmes about 6"02; Moorer and Holyfield about 6"00; Tyson about 5"9-10.

@Jordan87 could you stop casual fan? Larry Holmes fought Jose Ribalta who was 6'5 240, Gerry Cooney 6'5 230, Leroy Jones 6'5 254, Roy "Tiger" Williams 6'5 238, ect. Second Anthony Joshua is a natural 6'5 220 pound guy who bulked up. Most fighters from the 70's up until the early 2000's tried to be in the best shape they could be in. Now days most fighters are just over weight.

@ Leo McCarthy,

Size and height is most certainly relevant in Boxing to a certain Degree. Larry Holmes has faster hands and a better Jab Than Joshua. Joshua is 3" Taller and prime for prime would outweigh Larry by around 30 pounds.

Style wise Larry has never fought someone as Big as Joshua and Joshua has never fought someone with a Jab as good as Larry's, so that's a good question you ask.

As far as what could happen in the fight? Larry will Out-Jab Joshua but if Joshua Connects , Larry is most certainly going to the floor. Good Fight!

As Far as Height? Larry was not over 6'3". Him and Rob have the same posture and Larry doesn't even make 6'2" Now!

Great Boxer however, was in some Slugfests for sure.

Hmmm, I could have sworn I had seen Larry listed at the very specific number of 6'3.5. However, I just took a look at the Holmes vs Holyfield fight (tale of the tape) and Holmes is listed as 6'3 even. I thought that was where I had seen that figure. Either way, I think Larry was a strong 6'3. He seems to edge Foreman (the two are older men in these pics) in the pictures available when you google, 'Holmes vs. Foreman'.
Gman39 said on 10/Mar/19

Larry Holmes fought Earnie Shavers twice.

2/25/78 was fight 1 where he was listed as 6’4 by ABC
9/28/79 was fight 2 where he was listed at 6’3 by ABC.

He was also listed as 6’4 for the Norton fight on 6/9/78.

We all know he was not 6’4
Canson said on 12/Jun/18
Rob has Holmes listed correctly. Same height as Foreman in his prime
Canson said on 12/Jun/18
@Jordan87: poster Harry Sachs had it right. Foreman peak was a solid 6’3”. I know someone else who met him in his prime at 6’3” and said that they were the exact same height. Sachs also made mention to Ken Norton Sr that he was 6’2.75. He may have dipped slightly under that to 5/8 or something but there was approximately a cm between the two and a CM between Ali and Norton

But It’s because other guys are inflated around him. Ali once said that he and Foreman were the same height. That I don’t believe but half inch is plausible.
Bazza said on 14/Apr/18

@Redangold: Ali may have been 6’2.25 and Holmes looks every bit legit 6’3” but so does Foreman not really a strong 6’3”. Norton I can see 6’2.5. Harry Sachs said it well below
Redandgold said on 22/Dec/17
I have extensive fight footage of all of these guys. There are two fights on DVD where Larry was listed at 6ft 4. Which is a fairy tale.

1. First Shavers fight 3/25/78 pre fight
2. Norton fight 6/9/78 pre fight

I believe that Larry was around 6-2.75
Norton was 6-2.5
Foreman was 6-3.25. No more.
I believe Ali was 6-2 and not an inch more. Never looks as tall as others who claimed 6-3. Not much taller than Joe Louis.
Canson said on 9/Nov/17
@Harry Sachs: the saddest part about all of this is that inflating someone’s height is viewed as. Sign of respect or worship etc but it’s not. In my case specifically I hate when people inflate mine. I’d rather just be given my actual claim of 6’4” or 6’4 and change like I am rather than be told I’m taller. That’s like calling me a liar in the other direction which is worse imho as most guys don’t usually lie down they inflate upward
Canson said on 6/Nov/17
@Harry Sachs: I tend to notice people that do that more on this site as it stands out. He is not the only one that does it here but there are four or five others who make up measurements for people that don’t exist or that you can never locate. They also inflate every person when at least 60% if not more are already over listed by 1/2” or more. One thing is that most athletes if they have a pre draft usually won’t measire as high as it lists them as many are inflated a tad or in the Early morning. Examples John Wall I live in the DC Area and know two people who met him he’s under 6’2” by a hair not 6’2.75. My 6’3” friend had 1-1.5 and a 6’0” person I know said Wall was maybe 1.5” taller than him max. Of course Not all pre drafts are like that as I met Melo myself and he looked 198-199 in person (6’6/6’6.25). That looked a legit height for him too. But that just shows that they can be inflated and people will inflate even higher. Most people here know that already that they are not accurate. However they are all about making people taller thinking it enhances their performance. I just find that very irritating in real life and it is a pet peeve of mine when people do that and esp when people inflate others to make themselves or others taller. It’s calling an honest person a liar and it’s frustrating when I’m told no you can’t be 6’4. He’s or I am 6’4 and you’re way taller meanwhile the guy is 6’2-6’3 in many cases
HarrySachs said on 6/Nov/17
Canson you noticed that too? Reece does this for everybody he likes. Inflates their height. Then he lies about it. He said Holmes was listed at 6'4 doing the Shavers. I put up proof he was listed at 6'3 doing the Shavers fight and he has no response. He said Foreman was 6'4 even though he was measured at 6'3 when he was 19 and 6'3 when he was 28.
Robert Broome said on 19/Oct/17
I met Holmes at an HBO boxing card in Atlantic City in 2014. I’m 6’5” and he looked like he was still a solid 6’3” to me.
Canson said on 19/Oct/17
@Reece: he was never listed at anything other than 6’3”. And rob met him and listed him 6’3”. Why do you inflate everyone you comment on? You’ve done it for him Foreman Ali and Klitschko now and are the only one with wild theories that these athletes are taller than they claim or measure? Most athletes claim their shoes if you didn’t know and that’s where Foreman claiming 6’4” came from. I know because I was a college basketball player and used to claim 6’5” (not a huge stretch because I’m 6’4 3/8 in the afternoon) but today I claim 6’4 or 6’4 and change.

Click Here Larry Holmes was listed at 6'3 for the Shavers fight and Shavers was listed at 6'0. You people should just ignore Reece. He has this obsession with Ali, so he will do everything he can to make other fighters taller so he can make Ali taller. Larry Holmes was never listed at anything above 6'3, Ali was at least 1 inch shorter than Holmes and Foreman who was always listed at 6'3 barefooted in his prime. Ali was 6'2, Ken Norton was 6'2 3/4 and taller than Ali. Both Foreman and Holmes were always listed at 6'3 barefooted in their primes.

You guys have slightly over estimated Larry's height. Even on sites like boxrec (a site that is notorious for adding anywhere upto 3 to 5 cm on a boxer's true height in bare feet), Larry is down as 190 cm (just about 6 ft 3) tall when he was at his fighting peak (in fact, Larry is listed at 190cm all through his boxing career & he fought well into his fifties!!!)...so it's very doubtful that he would have grown even a cm more...more like he would shrink a couple of cms or so. George Foreman, who was a fraction taller than Larry, was around that 191 cm mark...so why the hell have you guys listed Larry as 191 cm? I just don't understand! Regarding Larry's boxing career & fighting style - he was the second best heavyweight world champion ever (AFTER ALI)...he poseesed the perfect style & iron chin, in his prime, to beat a short slugger like Joe Frazier, as well as a huge & tall puncher like Foreman...Larry had the perfect boxing style to beat both of them...that I'm sure of.

Sorry, Rob, but I still see Holmes at a flat 190 cm tall, rather than 191 cm. It's because I see Holmes just a fraction (like a cm) taller than 189 cm (6' 2.5") Ali. George Foreman, in turn, looks slightly taller (I think 191 cm tall) than Holmes. George certainly looked a bit taller taller than Ali when they met for instructions at the start of their super fight in Zaire.

Rob, Still don't know why Holmes has been given an extra cm! He has (usually) been listed as 190 cm (6 ft 3) tall on respected boxing sites & not as 191 cm (6 ft 3.25). Larry was the greatest heavyweight champ ever AFTER Ali in my opinion. He was a much better than Mike Tyson, & even troubled Mike for the first 3.5 rounds with his SUPER LEFT JAB before he was sent to the deck at the old age of 38! A peak Holmes would have outboxed a peak Tyson before knocking his block off.
Editor Rob
he is listed 6ft 3, but the equivalent cm value is 190.5, so you can round that down or up, 190 and 191 are both 5mm's away from the exact 6ft 3 mark.

Rob, I feel that you have overestimated Larry's height. Larry claims exactly 190 cm himself, so why give him an extra cm? This falls in line with other great heavyweights of the time (1970s and 80s) such as George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton & Muhammed Ali. Foreman (around 191 or 192 cm) was even a fraction taller than Holmes (in my estimation). And Ali (around 189 cm) was a fraction shorter than Holmes. Rob, could you please do an entry for Frazier? He's usually listed around 181 or 182 cm (5 ft 11.5), but I believe that he was actually shorter & around 179 cm (5 ft 10.5) or 180 cm (5 ft 11) at his tallest. I've viewed several films on Joe & he just doesn't seem close to 6 ft compared to Ali, Holmes, Norton & esp compared to Foreman (who completely towered Joe)!

Rob, could u please do an entry on Roberto Duran (Hands of Stone). I reckon he is 170 cm i.e. 5 ft 7 inches tall. However, I have even seen 5 ft 7.5 inches in a few places (I seriously doubt that coz Duran is a shortie)!
Vibram said on 26/Nov/13
Peak: 6ft3, 115kg, 10% bodyfat
Now: 6ft1.5?, 135kg, 30% bodyfat?

Looks no more than 5.5" inches on webmaster Rob. Holmes is 63 here rob?
Editor Rob
I think he's lost a bit of height, he can look between 6ft 2-2.5 range today.

Great pic. Looks 6"2 here but definite 6"3 prime keep the boxing pics coming Rob. I love them!

Cool pic Rob, of u & ALL TIME GREAT HOLMES! I can go with number 6 ft 3 for Holmes, but surely that is 190 (& not 191) cm? On Boxrec (a fairly respected boxing site), Holmes is down at 190 cm (& this was his peak fighting height so he would not have got any taller!) so how come you added an extra cm? Like I said, nice pic but how about an entry for Sugar Ray Robinson & Roberto Duran???
Editor Rob
I missed duran at a convention, another I should have got.
6ft 3 is right on that mark between 190 and 191 so you will find different places using 190 or 191, just depends if they want to round up or down for the cm part.

yeah def. in 6'2 zone nowadays
jeff said on 22/Nov/13
in his day he looked a tall boxer, he's maybe shrunk a little today

i was standing next to Larry in 1999 and he was one inch or 1 and a half inches shorter than I, and i'm 6'3 1.2
BIll said on 16/Feb/08
Larry is closer to 6'4, he is a little taller than Ali who is pegged at 6'3, Larry was measured at 6'4 for the first Shavers fight. I'd say 6'3.5 is about right.

fredrik, i think he is closer to among the best 6 ever. As for his height, 6`3 seems just about right. although, there are a lot of 6`3.5 billings.

Larry is a big guy but you know what they say about big guys, the bigger you are the harder you fall. Mike Tyson knocked this guy the hell out lol. Thanks Glenn

It makes no sense comparing Holmes and Ali today. Ali has definetely shrunk in his elderly days. When they were both young, I think Holmes was slightly taller.
Maybe 6

Glad to see Mr. Holmes smiling. Of course, most people posing and conversing with him, would want him to be -- more so, than just common folk.
glenn said on 17/Nov/07
thanks mamun.he was ok.not overly friendly.yes,he does look taller than ali.but im not sure how much ali mightve shrunk.
Mamun said on 16/Nov/07
That's a very nice picture Glenn ! When was this picture taken and was he
a nice person ? Did he look taller than Ali to you ?

Thanks Rob. I actually feel silly now. Believe it or not I am actually very good with basic maths (working numbers out in my head) but that was just an embarrassing error

Great pic Glenn,

one of the greatest boxing champion of all time.
Viper said on 14/Nov/07
Now that is a big man.
Anonymous said on 14/Nov/07
Always given as 6'3'' in his fighting days and looked it. When he fought Ali I think he was slightly the taller of the pair.
Big T said on 14/Nov/07
It's slightly less than 190.5cm

Editor Rob

75in * 2.54 = 190.5

Big T said on 13/Nov/07
Holmes is actually listed 6'3", and is now 58 years old but doesn't appear to have lost any height. He must have kept himself in ok shape because he kept fighting big fights in his 40s and even had a win over Butterbean a few years ago at the age of 52.

In his prime he was a 220lber, but he weighed 254lbs for his last fight and probably more now.

btw, imo 6'3" is 190cm and not 191cm...sorry to be pedantic but yeah

Editor Rob
since it's 190.5cm it could be rounded to either.
lookuptothetallpeople said on 13/Nov/07
with out a doubt 6'3.5
Danimal said on 13/Nov/07
I see at least 6'4". He's slouching to fit into the picture.
glenn said on 13/Nov/07
me too.i didnt think he was that tall.i thought 6-1.never saw him before.
Lynn said on 13/Nov/07
Never thought he is so tall.
glenn said on 13/Nov/07
seemed 6-2ish with his posture.in the pic i see 6-3. 6-4 is extreme.
nick said on 12/Nov/07
at the top of the picture it is around 6'1.5 so 6'3 looks really good for Larry
OutBenchThis said on 12/Nov/07
Considering his posture isn't great in this pic, looks a weak 6'3" (189cm-190cm)
Danius said on 12/Nov/07
looks it if he straightens his back
Elio said on 12/Nov/07
I'm seeing an absolute minimum of 7 inches between him and Glenn here. Perhaps he might be leaning towards 6'4" if he was completely straight. Depends on what shoes he had on I suppose. What was your opinion Glenn?
Derek said on 12/Nov/07
He looks to be slouching a bit, but he probably would be 6'3" if he stood straight.
ras said on 12/Nov/07
First! He does look that height. And very massive too.
