How tall is Mel Smith

While I was in hospital on the 12th July and waiting for my X-Ray, I played a comedy sketch to a young girl with a fine head of Afro hair. It came from ‘Not The Nine O’Click News’ and featured Mel as Cliff Mitchellmore, who used to introduce the Holiday programmes.

Also in the sketch was Rowan Atkinson, who played a Belgian, discussing ‘the quainter eating customs’ in Belgium. They included burping after each meal, breaking wind during or after the meal and throwing up all over the table, which was construed as the greatest compliment!

She found it frightfully amusing, as do I every single time I see it.

Such a funny guy was Mel, firstly in 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' and then in his sketch show with comedy partner, Griff Rhys Jones, entitled 'Alas Smith and Jones'. I guess I was quite surprised when Mel showed up in an episode of 'Minder', but I shouldn't have been; all the guys in sketch shows such as theirs are proper, talented actors, and in Mel's case, he went on to direct films, including the hilarious 'Bean - The Movie', starring his friend and comedy colleague, Rowan Atkinson.

I'll be the same age as he was when he parted company from this world due to cancer on the 10th September coming up. 😔

I think this list might be ok for Mel. Maybe he once measured 5ft 11 in shoes. He was definitely taller than Mel Gibson. Recently I sent some photos of Mel with Rowan Atkinson, I found another photo of them from 1997: Click Here
Here the Rowan looked a good two inches taller than Mel. Rob, I still hope you give Rowan an upgrade of his peak height to 5ft 11.5.

always thought he looked about 5'11 at least, not much shorter than Atkinson. What Sandy said, he doesn't look well in this photo, almost wouldn't recognize him.

Mel looks ill in this picture. It must have been taken towards the end of his life when he was suffering from cancer.

I remember him dancing sexily with Griff and Rowan and some Hot Gossip* style dancers on 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' - wearing rubber clothes and make-up!

* Hot Gossip were the dance troupe from the Kenny Everett Video show and kick-started the successful career of Sarah Brightman.

Hi posture was terrible and got worse with age. He could have been a strong 5ft 10 at peak when in Not the Nine o clock News.

Oh GREAT! It's Mel Smith from 'Not The Nine O'Clock News', which I enjoyed so much in the early 80s! I'll never forget the sketch from the show wherein Mel was interviewing Rowan Atkinson about strange 'Holiday Habits', and that week it was Belgian eating habits. Rowan brought up all the most revolting after-food customs practiced round the world - and lumbered them all onto the Belgians, his hand slowly creeping up a disconcerted Mel's leg. 🙄

Rowan ended by, as he phrased it, 'blowing off'! 😂😂😂🤣💨

Yes, Rob, I quite agree that Mel looked just under 5ft10 - 5ft10.

He gets 5ft9.75.
