What a spine-chilling performance he gave in Scanners! The end scene was way ahead of its time. Michael has the voice of someone much taller, but he is stocky and powerfully built, so no wisp of a man.

He gets 5ft9.5, but he must have lost a bit by now.

Do you think the 5'10.75 you mentioned down below could come from him, Rob? Of course that's ruled out, but maybe there's a chance that was a shoe/"1 inch rule" claim, hence 5'9.75 peak?
To be honest, he doesn't look over 176 in the pic, but I remember he still seemed to have a slight edge over Odenkirk in the more recent Nobody.

Rob saw 5ft 9.5 in 2009, he is now 70 so some noticeable height loss is expected. I'd be inclined to say 5ft 9.75 at peak, hard to say how much he has lost today though given his knee replacements.

@miko and Matthew: Yeah, you can certainly get well into your 60's without losing much.

And Ironside was only 59 in this photo since it was taken in 2009, though I think it's possible he was 5'10" in his prime as Danimal says. At least he looked taller to me in his 80's and early 90's films even accounting for the cowboy boots he wore in Visiting Hours(1982).

He's certainly a guy who can appear big and intimidating on camera who's surprisingly only of average height. In so many of his early movies, he's so intense and characters so unpleasant that it's almost hard to watch him but he seems a pretty down-to-earth guy off screen.

Agreed Matthew, my grandfather is 78 years old, he was measured in the Army/medical records at 5'6.5 and is still 5'6.5 today. Good posture, good health, absolutely no height loss.

My other grandfather who recently passed away was measured in his prime at 6'2.5, and was still around 6'1 at 86 years old after 2 knee replacements and much poorer health.

That's not a given. Believe it or not, I remember when we measured my father when he was around 64 or 65 years old, he measured pretty much exactly the same as he did in his prime. If he'd lost any height, it was couldn't have been more than 1/8 of an inch at most and like I say he was in his mid 60s.

I am surprised by this listing, I always thought Ironside was 5'11", maybe 6 foot. He looked tall in some of the movies, like Total Recall and Highlander 2. He finally got to play a hero as the voice of Sam Fisher, it was kind of sad he spent most of his careers portraying bad guys.

read somewhere that sam's height was taken off Michael who voices him, sam is 5'10 or 178cm. i'd say mike is 5'10.

Gave a pretty tall impression in Visiting Hours from 1982, but I'll have to check the cast and see how tall they were supposed to be, and Ironside was wearing cowboy boots, but there's no way I buy him at less than 5'10" peak. However, what was more noticeable in that movie was Shatner's awful toupee.

He's another guy who seems taller and more imposing on screen due to the nature of his characters and, for my part, confusing him in the 80s and early 90s with fellow gruff, balding and usually villainous Kurtwood Smith. Christian Bale seems to have at least 2 inches of height over Ironside.

in 1982 scanners he looks acts terrific as a bad guy role and look tall like 5ft11. never know he was only over 5ft8 range. perhaps 5ft8.75(174.75cm) ?
