rob what made ya say 6 2.5? don't the Olympics precisely measure him? or did he slip through the cracks?
Editor Rob
I think somewhere in that 6ft 2.5 zone is what he may well measure at, with self confessed 6ft Woods or Colin Kaepernick who was 6ft 4 and 5/8ths...
Allie said on 24/Oct/15
Rob was that almost 6'4 sneaker height? Almost every site I've seen gives him 6'4 or 6'3.5. Typically though athletes are almost always solid in height. Maybe take away a half inch due it being in the morning. Or was that just football, soccer and hockey.
Editor Rob
I don't know if he meant it barefoot or not...he may well one day have measured that height early in the day (the 6ft 3.5).

In that sense, somebody claiming an early height isn't wrong - they are that height, albeit they are only that stature for a short period of the day.

Eli was measured at 6'4.75" for the NFL draft. Assuming that figure is accurate, it looks like Phelps would be around 6'3" give or take. He appears a strong 6'3" on the photo to the left but he appears more 6'2" on the right photo (although I think the angle may be making him look shorter there).

@Ice No, he's clearly shorter than Eli Manning (who was measured at 6'4 3/4, probably right out of bed) by more than an inch.
jessman said on 17/Sep/15
Numerous pictures of him next to Alex Popov, who has been described as 197cm to 200cm. Popov has an easy three inches on him, possibly four inches. I estimate Popov at 198cm. I estimate Phelps at 188cm, 189cm at most. Popov has always edged other swimmers who claim 198cm (Gary Hall Jr...Matt Biondi). Not sure if theirs were shoe measurements.

Conan always wears dress shoes with a noticeable heel. They make him look even taller and he's already a giant. He's also standing closer to the camera in that photo.

---

I do agree with that, it's kind of my point. What I'm saying is that anyone who saw that episode of Conan knows that there's simply no way Conan should be listed at 6'4" and Phelps at 6'2.5". Conan is not 1.5" taller than Phelps, they're obviously closer in height than that. They seemed about the same height together. I wouldn't really complain if Conan was listed at 2 cm higher than Phelps, but there's no way he was anything like 4 cm taller when they were actually together. They looked about the same.

When he was on Conan they looked around the same height. I haven't seen found clips of them standing together online, but I remember watching them and thinking they were very close. @MD

Those photos don't really prove he's 6'2.5" tops to me. His posture looks pretty poor next to Thomas, generally Phelps has a slouch. He was quite towered over by Kobe Bryant, yes, and he obviously isn't a 6'4"-er. However he looked no shorter than Tony Hawk here Click Here who is 6'3". He also looks more 6'3" than 6'2" range next to Ray Lewis Click Here and although the clip isn't on youtube he looked about the same height on Conan O'Brien on his show. I think he can look 6'2.5" too but he can look 6'3" more often than he looks 6'2" imo, I'd give him 190 - 191 personally. Maybe 190 to be safe.

MD said on 4/May/15
@Matthew, the photographic evidence simply doesn't show that. I'll have to keep saying it, but the only way he might appear above the current listing is his proportions. When he's around legit 6'3" and 6'4" guys is obvious he's shorter. He's been listed at 6'4" for so long that 6'2.5" feels counterinuitive and might be a bit psychologically daunting, but that's what he is.

Again, here he is not even 6 months ago with a measured 6'2.25' former NFL player Aldalius Thomas:

There is imply no way he's over 6'2.5"
Matthew said on 2/May/15
He's probably a guy who has a larger than average fluctuation between his morning and night time measurements. I still think he looked much closer to Conan's height than this when he was on the show years ago and I also thought he looked pretty much dead even with Tony Hawk. But there's little doubt he's not a legit 6'4" as he's widely listed. Still, I think he should be listed in the 190 - 191 cm range rather than 189. The only way I see him measuring 6'2.5" imo is if you caught him at his absolute low after a long day, then maybe. I think he's closer to 6'3" usually, and a 190 cm listing would seem more realistic.
Andrea said on 1/May/15
No, i think his original listing was the full 6'3 but i remember when i asked Rob about him he said he could have been 6'3.5... I never bought that, though. I always said that even the full 6'3 was a stretch and now he's at a more believable 6'2.5! He could have measured "almost 6'4" in shoes or he was just being optimistic! I think he'd measure between 6'2 and 6'2.5 so this listing is fine.

I don't think anyone is arguing under 6'2" for Michael. I'm not even arguing for a flat 6'2". But, the 6'4" number was ridiculous, and Lochte is at least a solid two inches shorter.
Bojast said on 21/Apr/15
As a former swimmer in the south FL area I personally know Ryan lochte and have met phelps on multiple occasions. To those claiming some absurdly low numbers: Michael is without a doubt at LEAST 6'2 but more likely right around 6'3. Ryan is around 6-6'1, but most wouldn't think this as he is a notorious sloucher with horrible posture. Anything lower than the heights I've stated can be disregarded.

MD said on 18/Jan/15
This is a good downgrade, and puts people like Ryan Lochte in better perspective, who's gotten away with claiming 6'2" for years but barely even looks 6'0" half the time.

This may surprise a lot of people about Michael because he's claimed 6'4" so often, and his ridiculously long torso often makes him look taller, but this is a very good listing when you view him with people who are legitimately 6'3" and above.
Mathew said on 16/Jan/15
I don't know about 6'2.5". It's hard to reconcile Phelps at 6'2.5" and Conan O'Brien at 6'4". When Phelps went on Conan they looked roughly the same height. Conan could possibly be taller than Phelps, but I don't think I saw anything that resembled a 1.5" gap between the two.

My measurement is a little over 34 inches but i only wear pants with a 34 inch inseam. (which are hard to find because i'm also pretty skinny and thus have a low width level in pants)

In general Phelps holds loose posture, but I'd give him the 6'3". He appears taller than Lochte by 2" - 2.5" range.
MD said on 23/Apr/14
Explain it? As usual, you're just posting photos with bad angles and then being a poor judge of height all the way around. Phelps is very noticeably taller than Woods even taking into account the angle.

Angle and posture would account for that.

Personally, I see a 2.5" difference between Lochte and Phelps, so I'd put Lochte at 6'0.5". He was also MAYBE an inch taller than Jimmy Fallon on his show. This would make sense since a lot of people claim two-inches or so above their actual height.

Phelps is probably 6'3 at worst 6'2.75,he generally looks about 2in taller than Lochte which confirms his college listing at6'1 and he also looked near 2in taller than Chad LeClos(who is185-6rather than 184) in the Olympics. Swimmers listings are strange, some are upgraded others downgraded.A good example for the latter is french swimmer Camille Lacourt who got listed at 197and200 but looked at the very worst 9cm taller than Fabien Gilot who is listed at 192and194(he's more likely 191), he equally looked only 2cm shorter than Matt Grevers who is possobly more 202than 203.Another example is russian swimmer Yuliya Efimova who got listed at 173 a while ago and was finally brought to 178 which she definitely looked with 172 Meilutyte and 183 Jessica Hardy (both correctly listed).Wonder where they get the figures, Missy Franklin was once listed at 187and now 185, she's probably only 183 as she looked the same than Hardy (considering footwear) and about 3in shorter than Phelps.

Seahawksfan,

You've been here quite a while. Knowing that the entire purpose of this site is to debunk a lot of claims by the people in question, why would you just assume that Jones' given height of 6'5" is correct?
MD said on 20/Dec/13
Well, that's what the term "long" and "short" legs mean when we're talking about height. Long and short in proportion to one's body. Yes, he does have "short legs" in proportion to his body. Everything about measurements is relative to something else.

SAK, it's different. Phelps is not over 6'3 for sure, and very likely between 6'2 and 6'3! He could be almost 6'4 in the morning, out of bed. I mean, he has a very long spine so i think he loses at least one inch from morning to night! But just look at him with Kobe Bryant, who is supposed to have been measured 6'4.75, he looks at least 3 inches shorter. Or even with Lochte... There are some pics out there of Lochte and Kellan Lutz. Lutz is about 6' range and Lochte actually looks similar. I dont think he's over 6'0.5, so 6'2.5 for Phelps is closer to the truth, in MY opinion...

---

The Kobe pics made Phelps look under 6'2". That said he's always looked 2" - 2.5" taller than 6'2" olympic and 6'1" college listed Ryan Lochte. Phelps doesn't always hold the best posture, I think that's part of why he looked short next to the basketball guys. Standing up straight there's enough evidence to suggest that he's a legit 6'3". For example, he's definitely looking a good 6'3" next to NFL listed 6'1" Ray Lewis here: Click Here and here looking at least the same height as 6'3" Tony Hawk: Click Here

Arch, i didnt see many things of Lochte too (I neither knew his name) but i've seen some pics of him with Kellan Lutz and he just doesnt look taller than him. Now we know Lutz is a 6' range guy, so even 6'0.5 is already generous for Lochte. Prince Harry looked about 187 near Bolt, so if they looked the same height, you realise how crazy a 6'4 listing for Phelps would be. that phelps eyes are raised a little so possibly he's almost 180 rather than 182...unless phelps really was 6ft 4, which I doubt.

Not over 190 cm! Lochte recently looked about the same height, if not shorter, of Kellan Lutz, who is a legit 6'! Phelps looks less than 2 inches taller than Lochte, that would make him even less than 6'2... But i like him and he generally looks close to 6'3... 6'2.5 is a fair guess for him!

I belong to Phelps's swim club in Baltimore (Meadowbrook) and have stood next to him barefoot; he's about 6'4" but his lankiness does make him appear taller; attitude when I've seen him around the pool is somewhat aloof/unapproachable, which is understandable given that was obviously focused on training at the time.

Phelps has the arms and torso of a 6'8'' guy and the legs of a 5'10'' men. Really weird proportions.
sprint84 said on 10/Oct/12
I think he's probably a little over 6'3" in the morning and in the mid-6’2” range during the day. Not a downgrader, just basing it on how he looks next to other athletes and celebrities.
I’m also not as awed by his torso/arm length as others are. For some reason, Phelps wears his tiny trunks as low as possible, and it makes his torso appear much longer than it really is. Put him in regular clothes and his proportions normalize quite a bit. And his arms are long, but not abnormally so -- a disparity of 4” between height and wingspan is really not exceptional, especially for an athlete.
I believe Phelps’ greatness comes from practice, fitness, and technique – not so much from having superhuman physical proportions.

After having watched the London 2012 Olympics Live, there is no room for doubt when I decree him to be 6'4" (1.93 m).

The evidence that he is 6'4" (1.93 m) is incontrovertible as in his various medicals, which are carried out by qualified and professional Medics and Doctors each and every year, he is measured precisely; the results of his medicals are published and obviously accurate. Furthermore, Physics has proven that a person's height must match or at least correlate to his or hers arm span length; again various medicals have shown his arm span to be 6'4" (1.93 m).

Uh, no, his arm span has been measured at 6 ft 7-8 and he is known to be a physical freak of nature with the torso of a 6 ft 8 guy and legs of a 5'10 guy. Basketball players are "measured by professional medics and doctors" and are listed 1-1.5 inches higher than they actually are a lot. There is many inconsistencies in sports measurements. From my experience the measurements which generally seem genuine barefoot measurements are NFL players.

He is evidently a sensational swimmer; one only has to look at his status in the Olympic Games Record Book; he's got top spot and thus is the most decorated Olympian in all of time!

I am also inspired by the former Olympian sprinter and Athlete Michael Johnson who now works as a presenter for the BBC; from seeing him sprint at the Olympics and present the Olympics for the BBC, I do not think 6'1.5" (1.87 m) would be a stretch to far for him; he always looks tall.

His obvious intellect is noteworthy and is evident in his philosophy and approach to life which I would say is rational and impressive. He draws his inspiration from inspiring songs such as Eminem's Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. 8 Mile song 'Lose Yourself' and Al Green's 'Tired Of Being Alone'.

A five time Olympic Game Champion shows his remarkable record in Athletics but he is one of a kind in so many aspects and the world needs more people like him!

Finally, I am inspired by the former England Centre-Forward Alan Shearer who now works as a presenter for the BBC; from watching him playing football in the various international tournaments, such as the FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships, and presenting for the BBC, 6'0" (1.83 m) sounds completely certain.

His England goal to match ratio at 30 goals in 63 caps shows his sheer class; it's every striker's dream to have roughly 1 goal every 2 appearances. Look past his Blond Hair and into his fierce Blue Eyes, a tall, strong and determined agent with sheer might and calibre will emerge as well as all those spectacular screaming goals of his, which followed firework like trajectories; rapid twisting and turning and completely indomitable.

A genuinely nice guy, except deadly when the circumstances deemed it necessary, and a great sportsman. In addition, he was, as so many managers have commented, the complete centre-forward; he possessed great strength, height, aerial ability and a deadly punishing finish. A truly unique and once in a lifetime talent!

shrinking 2cm for 6ft 3-4 men is more likely than shorter men, so a guy who dips to 6ft 3 could be close to 6ft 4 when rising from bed.

-------------------------
Agreed, I don't think Phelps is anything less than 6'3". Guy actually looked a bit taller than 6'3" listed Tony Hawk in that youtube clip someone posted down below. Phelps doesn't have the best posture at times, so maybe that's the reason he could appear 6'2" range to a lot of people?... or they're just downgraders?

@Shaun: Yeah, I've heard that we humans aren't meant to eat grains/gluten and lactose. I've also heard that gluten is suspected to be the cause and/or contributor to many diseases and illnesses today. Some people have claimed to have reverse or vastly improve many diseases/illnesses, both physical and mental, such as MS and schizophrenia just to name a few by cutting gluten and/or lactose from their diets. I didn't have many problems with lactose growing up, but once I got into my late teens, every time I'd drink milk or ate something that contained lactose, I became really gassy, would have minor stomach pains and constipation. I've pretty much completely cut lactose out of my diet because of this and haven't had any of the previously mentioned digestive problems since. I do suspect that I too have gluten allergies because I suffer from mental-fog/ADD like symptoms at times and when I eat foods containing gluten, I become fatigued. I plan on cutting all gluten from my diet as soon as I can afford to buy foods without it.

@rkc_cat: Yeah, we have similar proportions. My brother who is about the same height as you (he was 6'0" even the last time he was measured but maybe is 6'1" now since it's been months that he was last measured and he may still be growing) wears the same inseam as me, 32" inches. Not too long ago I gave him some pairs of jeans that I no longer wanted that he wanted, and they fit him perfectly, haha. I also noticed that we agree on the heights of many celebs here, like 6'3" for Michael Phelps and 5'5" for Bieber-the-dirty-lift-wearer, lol.
rkc_cat said on 14/Sep/12
@hahaha_XD: It's true, I'm also like you (long legs, short torso), and at least for me it doesn't make shopping exactly easy! I'm 6'0.5", and when I'm shopping and I ask for jeans they usually give me a 32" inseam without even asking, so I guess that's the size most guys about my height have. But I wear a 31" waist / 34" inseam, so I guess we have similar proportions.

Regarding Phelps, I also think he looks about 6'3".
Shaun said on 13/Sep/12
Yeah Jose generally 6'3-6'3.5" looks right and like Dolph Lundgren I think anything under 6'3" is bunk but a lot of people think Dolph is 6'2"-6'2.5" too where I'd bet he is almost identical in height to Lundgren nowadays; Dolph said he was measured in the gym at 191.5cm recently. Phelps could be 6'4" out of bed.

Interesting XD. Well the human body I don't think evolved to eat processed stuff and bread/cakes doughnuts so that's probably why is digestivally not ideal. Lactose is known to inflame the skin and stuff which is probably why you could see it that way. I know Miley Cyrus and loads of Hollywood people have said that when they cut out gluten and lactose their physical and mental health improved massively.
hahaha_XD said on 13/Sep/12
If I measure my inseam to the highest part between my legs (the space between my crotch and buttcrack) down to the floor, I get a 33" measurement for my inseam but I go with 32". I generally wear 32" inseam pants/jeans though and my waist size is 30". Shoe size 12 US.

@MD and Shaun: I've heard that most people, maybe even all people have an allergy to gluten and lactose, but just don't know it.

@Zero. I wear 34 inseam jeans at your height, if your 11.5 is US I measure the same in shoes too 10.5 UK but generally wear an 11. But I once had a pair of 33 inseam M &S work trousers which fitted perfectly. M&S go up to 35 leg; I sold a few of those to some 6'4" range guys while I worked there but it was quite rare. I used to be a 30 waist in my late teens and early 20s! I was smaller in shirts then and 16 collar too. I remember ordering 30W 33Ls and the Marks recruiter saying it was quite a rare size! My last pair though were 34 waist 33 leg. Phelps is a 32 waist I think but his proportions make him look like a 26 waist! Doubt Lochte is as low as 184cm or 185cm for that matter.

Symptoms MD? It started actually during the months leading up to my GCSEs. I used to come home lunch time and eat quite a lot of peanut butter sarnies, perfect for revising and stuff. However within about half an hour I would always started to feel very tired, start sweating and stuff in the afternoon lessons. It wasn't until almost a year later that I told somebody and they suggested I see somebody for an allergy test. Symptoms. Eat something with gluten, say eat a couple of sandwiches, cakes or something. Within about half an hour the first symptoms you should notice is a rise in temperature, you'll start sweating, gradually you'll get tired and get a major headache and your eye will start stinging, might become bloodshot as a result of the allergy reaction. If I have it before you go to bed when I wake up in the morning my brain feels like it has been "squeezed" and feel tired and irritable. As I say I'm not telling people "cut out wheat you'll grow, but I swear on my life it is what happened to me at the age of 17 and made a major difference to my health and well-being too once I stopped eating it, and no more irritable bowel symptoms which is also common with coeliac disease. It may have been a coincidence but I'm convinced it had a lot to do with it. MD if you are concerned find an alternative medicine specialist, a homeopathic person. I lay down on a sofa and she put extracts of stuff in a small plastic tub on the meridian points on my stomach and outstretched my arm and tested my strength. I was trying as hard as possible and it would just flop whenever she put the allergens on me. I was amazed. She said "poor boy" as she knew how damaging the gluten had been to me.
MD said on 28/Aug/12
Shaun,

I don't want to get too off topic, but what is the test for wheat and gluten allergies? I'm in my mid-20's now, so my growth is done, but I've always thought I may have a gluten allergy, but never asked about it with my previous doctor. Now, I'm really thinking about getting tested. What were you symptoms?
Mathew said on 27/Aug/12
He's not under 6'3" even though he can look 6'2" range because he tends to slouch at times and his unusually long upper body to lower body ratio makes him look a bit shorter. 6'3" is fair, and even a weak 6'4" as he claims is very possible. He looked the same height as Conan O'Brien when he was on the show. The pic with Kobe makes 6'3" look better though. Compared to Ryan Lochte who was listed in college as 6'1", Michael looks 2" - 3" taller.
ANDREA[ITA] said on 27/Aug/12
Well, when i see somebody's listing at 6'3, i think about them as 190cm people, not 191 as many of you keep saying! 191 is more a strong 6'3 to me! I know that 6'3 is 190.5, but if a person is 190, thats a legit 6'3!
Shaun said on 27/Aug/12
Yeah Andreaita I figured you were on the tall side as like me you seem to show more interest in 6'1"-6'6" listed people on here who are similar range or taller than you are and are not as interested in people under 6'. My interest in height stems from when I was 7 years old and was given the Guinness Book of World records which had giants and dwarfs on the first couple of pages!! I was always measuring people as a kid LOL, asking the heights and shoe sizes of relatives and friends of my parents LOL. I was a little above average mostly throughout school but at 16 was only 5'9"-5'9.5" and about 150 pounds. I then visited an alternative medicine person who did some tests on me as I had frequent headaches and stomach aches and tiredness and she put oats and stuff on my meridian points on my stomach and tested my arm strength and it flopped! She discovered I had a gluten/wheat allergy. As soon as I stopped eating wheat I started to shoot up and grew at least 4 inches! I remember my dad measured me against the kitchen fridge at 5'11" in my socks within a matter of months later after I cut out wheat and they were shocked at how quickly I'd grown. I have a feeling though that I'd have had the spurt anyway at 17-18 but I think it was too much of coincidence at the timing of the spurt to not have been related to the allergy. I filled out in my early 20s and currently weight a little over 14 st the last time I checked but I've been watching my diet this year. It might surprise you how things which disrupt your body chemistry like allergies can tamper with growth and cause all sorts of ailments.

Rob, have you ever heard of anything like this? Its exactly what happened to me, honest truth! Did you hear that Djokovic the tennis player discovered he had a wheat allergy too and cut it out and has since grown much stronger and faster and started winning tournaments and reached World number 1 after doing so?

Excellent, and a photo too! Well done Rob! yes he can look 6'4" on occasion. Zero if you see him next to 6'4.75" Kobe Bryant and Deron Williams who is listed at 6'3" its difficult to see anything above 6'3". Lochte looked the same height as Prince Harry so probably between 6'1" and 6'2".

He's always been listed as being 6'4", but I never believed it. It's a sports height just like every other height. Like I said on the Height Request page, Lochte next to Jimmy Fallon (5'11.75") and not being any taller confirmed to me that Michael is probably just about 6'3", though not quite, since Phelps is really only about two inches taller than Lochte.

If he is only 6'3, i guess that means Lochte is closer to 6'1 than the 6'2 he is usually listed at. Doesn't surprise really.

6'3 is a good guess! Rob, whats the lowest you think he could be? He might be 6'2.5?

Thanks rob! In the Olympics that 6'0.5" guy looked pretty close to phelps height so my guess is that phelps could be 189cm not his 6'4" listing
