You have to be MASSIVE to be an offensive lineman. I've only seen one in the NFL legitimatly under 6'2...Hank Fraley, but he was a porkchop at 6'1'' 320. Guys like Leonard Davis and Bryant McKinnie are upwards of 6'7/6'8 350 of non-fat.

LV, I saw your boy Shaun Phillips on ESPN Classic the other day playing against Michigan in 2000. Drew Brees as the QB.
Height for a QB matters a lot in football because its easier to see over your offensive line. Height for the linebacker position is a little overrated. Youve had guys as short as 5-9 in the NFL excel at linebacker like Sam Mills, but thats the exception to the rule. The NFL generally wants linebackers that are 6-0 or taller. Being tall is an advantage for the defensive backs. Height is an advantage for wide receivers. Being under 6-0 is an advantage for a running back. Vegas the only 5-9 QB I know that excelled in the NFL was Doug Flutie. You really have to be 6-0 or taller for that position in the NFL.

In response to the comments about NHL player heights, standard rule of thumb with most hockey weights due to the insane amount of competition in the scouting process is that stats get inflated by an inch of height and 5-10 pounds of weight, every time. It's what mine was always bumped up by my coaches from AAA up through juniors. The weight is the more important issue though, frankly, because it's associated with strength. There are only a few players in the NHL that are really legitimately under 5'10 though.
LV said on 21/Oct/07
Vegas, height is very important for NFL QB's because most of their offensive linemen are 6'3" to 6'8". If you're 5'9" and one of their offensive linemen get pushed back near them, it would be very difficult to get a pass over the top of them or to even see their receivers. It's not uncommon for short QB's to accidentally throw the ball off of the backs or helmets of his linemen. I agree that a successful short QB is more impressive than a taller one. Doug Flutie is a good example. I think he was 5'9"-5'10"ish.
Bonafide said on 21/Oct/07
It also helps to be tall to see over the lineman because most of them are tall.
Alex said on 21/Oct/07
You don't have to be that tall for a QB in the NFL but its just most are 6'4-6'5. Under 6'2 is considered shortish for an NFL QB I believe.
Alex said on 21/Oct/07
LV, it depends some guy who are X height and 1/2 will sometimes round up then sometimes round down. Most will round up though. I can be 6'0 1/2 but only a few hours after being up and I'm more 6'0 most of the day so thats the height I say.
Vegas said on 21/Oct/07
LV; Couchscout have Drew Brees at a measured 6'0.2", maybe he grew???
i hear alot talking about height in american football (someone too short for a certain position), why should it matter??? i am sure a guy at 5'9 could easily do as good a job at QB as a 6'4 guy, but then again i don't know anything about nfl so.... imo the only sport where height is important is basketball, in all other sports/positions you should be ok regardless of height i would have thought, if the likes of ben wallace can give up the best part of a foot on some nba centers (and still hold his own) then the argument that you are too short for a certain position in the NFL seems like a load of BS to me.
LV said on 20/Oct/07
Jack is back....Drew Brees is not 6'0 1/2". I know him personally because he lived down the hall from me during our freshman year at Purdue. He was measured barefoot at the NFL combine just under 6'0" (somewhere between 5'11 1/2 or 5'11 3/4") and literally had to convince them he was 6'0". It was kinda a half joke but they did end up listing him at 6' even. It made the news (at least at Purdue) because many felt he was too short to be a successful QB in the NFL so listing him at a sub-six foot could've really hampered him. I realize any fool can measure him and see he isn't a legit 6'0" but its just a matter of perceptions. He may have never been given the opportunity had they given him a 5'11" listing. Regardless of his height (and slow start to this season), he's still one of the best QB's in the NFL and has been proving his doubters wrong since high school.
As far as Manning goes, during his Saturday Night Live show he said he was "around" 6'5". I took that to mean he was 6'4 3/4"+ and just goes by 6'5". He is a humble guy and always downplays everything so I wouldn't be suprised if he was 6'5.5" and just always says he's 6'5" when anyone else who is 6'5.5" would say they were 6'6". I have no doubts about his height since he is taller than everyone on his offensive line and is usually the tallest guy on the field. I live in Indianapolis so I hope to run across him one day, I'll make sure to get a picture with him when I do.

Roller blades give more height then ice skates then.
dave said on 19/Oct/07
I played ice hockey Alex skates give you anywhere from 3 to 3.5 inches, but also the helmet gives you a little boost too. Thats why hockey players in their gear look gi-normous when you see them up close.
I've seen players in the NHL listed at 5'8 and 5'9 - but the majority of guys that height get it rounded up to 5'10, im sure of that.
Alex said on 19/Oct/07
In the NBA the most you'll get is a 2 inch inflation I think.
Dave, you've never seen a guy in the NHL listed under 5'10? So you think guys 5'8 or less get listed at 5'10? that would be funny. For those shorter guys maybe they count the skates.
But how much does ice skates give to you anyway? 4 inches I think?
I have a pair of roller blades and they give an easy 4 inches to my height.
Vegas said on 19/Oct/07
Ball-A-Hallic; name a player in the nba, past or present rounded up by 4 inches
guys like dwayne wade and Kirk Henrich are basically their nba listed heights and there are many others. 1.5 inches is usually the cut off point for rounding up in the nba, very very rare to find a nba player rounded up by 2 full inches
Ball-A-Hallic said on 18/Oct/07
mostly in the nfl their heights are probally just riounded up by an inch and nba can probally range from 2-4
dave said on 18/Oct/07
Hockey is pretty accurate, but if theres a 5'7/5'8'' guy they always get the 5'10'' listing usually. Its like if you're under 5'10'', then you dont deserve to be in the league.
Alex said on 18/Oct/07
I think most NFL heights are right. Just some are rounded up 1/2 or so. With a few 1-2 inches more than they are which is pretty rare.
NBA we know are almost all inflated 1-2 inches.
Baseball, can be up to 3-4 inches like Viper said.
NHL I'm not sure on. Tough to say with them since they're in skates.
Viper said on 17/Oct/07
Couchscout has Joe Horn at 5-11. Chris, Ive seen Shawne Merriman in person and hes 6-2, not the 6-4 billed height the NFL gives him also. Most NFL heights are accurate, but there are a few one offs fudged by 1-2 inches.
Alex said on 17/Oct/07
I lose a bit more actually. 6'0 3/4, or 6'1 on a good day right out of bed then down to 6'0-6'0 1/4 from midday and on.
Chris said on 17/Oct/07
Jamarcus Russel was measured at 6-5 1/2" by the NFL. At that height, Jamarcus chooses whether he wants to be listed at 6'5", or 6'6". I've heard Peyton Manning was measured the same, and chose to be listed at 6'5", becuase he thought 6'6" sounded too slow.
I've met Jamarcus Russel a few times, and he is 6'5"-6'6", but not near 6'7", as some were saying.
Also .. the NFL measures without shoes, and only rounds up, or down by the 1/2 inch, at most. The NFL isn't like the NBA with rounding heights up. If a guy is listed at 6'3" or more in the NFL, you can probably rest assured that it is legit. Some of the guys that are listed at 6' or 6'1", there may be a little fudging, especially at QB, but even then, it is usually pretty accurate. I've met Joe Horn, who is listed at 6'1". I'm 6'5", and towered over Horn. I'd say he isn't anymore than 5'11". But most players in NFL heights are accurate.
Viper said on 17/Oct/07
6-3 1/2-6-3 3/4 and then usually down to 6-3 1/4.
Alex said on 16/Oct/07

Viper said on 10/Oct/07

Alex said on 10/Oct/07
I wonder how they measure you. If its one of those laser height machines which can be off a lot of the time. Or is it done by measuring tape or something else.
Viper said on 10/Oct/07
The NFL doesnt measure you in shoes btw.
Viper said on 10/Oct/07
Well, couchscout had him at 6-0 1/4. And Warrick Dunn is closer to 5-7.
Schnouzer Breath said on 10/Oct/07
think Mike Vick's height (ookie, lol) is with shoes; he always looked like the smallest guy on the field besides Warwick Dunn. the consensus here in the ATL was always, he was really just under six foot. Hey Hey Hey looks 6-5ish tops (not quite 6-6 methinks)
Jack is back said on 9/Oct/07
Drew Brees is actually 6'0 1/2. Rex Grossman is a just a legit 6'1.
Alex said on 9/Oct/07
I'm suprised he was rounded down to 6'5 then up to 6'6.

Couchscout.com had Mike Vick at a measured 6-0.2

Drew Bledsoe is 6-5 max. Jamarcus Russel i 6-5 1/2 max.

Ball-A-Hallic said on 7/Oct/07
Alex they say JaMarcus Russell is the tallest QB he was listed at 6'6 and i think measured at like 6'61/4 or 6'6.5 and i think leftwich is just 6'5
Alex said on 7/Oct/07
Mike Vick is exactly my height then. He can look taller than that sometimes.
Drew Brees is listed at 6'0. His exactly height is probably anywhere from 5'11 3/4 to 6'0 1/2.
PMfan said on 7/Oct/07
that is weird. The nfl has him listed as 6 foot 5 so i thought his real barefoot height would be like 6 3.5 or 6 4 maybe because i know sports round up alot. there is no way they would round down. i believe he is 6 4ish. oh and a question for VIPER: where did you read that mike vick is measured at 6.025? hes listed as 6 foot even so you figure his real height would be 5 10.5 5 11ish...

He is listed at 6'5 on NFL.com. They rounded down instead of up. Well if he's 6'5 1/4 then they would but if you're such and such height and 1/2 then you have a choice to be rounded up or down.
Eric Bonacchi said on 25/Sep/07
he also said that he says 6 ft. 5.5 in because "it sounds more athletic than saying a full 6'6 because that just makes you sound slow". He continues to say "thats something that Drew Bledsoe taught me. Not sure exactly where i read that but i will look for it.
