Arch makes a good point. He's a very strong character. He doesn't quite have a Napoleon complex because he's not short by any means but he has the personality of somebody much larger and I've heard guys over the years (legitimately big men who dwarf Keane) name him as one of the toughest opponents they've ever faced on the pitch. Graeme Souness and Johnny Giles had similar temperaments...not physically imposing either but that same ruggedness on the pitch...don't see them nowadays
------------------------------------------------------
If you listen to that Arsenal team of the late '90s and early '00s, Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp, Pires etc. all 6ft+ (Bergkamp is listed 183cm but is really a 186-7range guy), they actually cite Paul Scholes as their toughest opponent and the player they were most "scared of":
Just goes to show you don't need to be big to have that fear factor, I mean look at Messi, you can't tell me any defender isn't afraid of going up against him!

Rob, any chance of adding these guys?
Niall Quinn: 6ft4½(194.3cm)
Tony Cascarino: 6ft3(190.5cm)
Packie Bonner: 6ft2½(189.2cm)
David O'Leary: 6ft1¾(187.2cm)
Paul McGrath: 6ft1½(186.7cm)
Mick McCarthy: 6ft1¼(186.1cm)
Quinn absolutely dwarfs everyone
Click Here Click Here; Cascarino I know claimed 6ft2 but that has to be a round down - Easy 2in on Teddy Sheringham (6ft0½-1)
Click Here Click Here Click Here; Packie can look close to Tony so my guess is a bit over 6ft2
Click Here, actually edges him here
Click Here; O'Leary pulls off 6ft2 in these photos - w/h Ferguson
Click Here near Bonner and Quinn
Click Here; McGrath may have lost a little judging by that photo with Dave but w/h Keane
Click Here Click Here (also edging Carragher) losing some height with Jack
Click Here but edging him here
Click Here; McCarthy overall seems shortest of that bunch going by photos - not holding up as well with Quinn
Click Here Click Here good inch below Bonner and edged by McGrath

Rob, how tall do you think Mick McCarthy is?
I’ve seen him described as 6ft2. Not sure I see 4in between him and Roy, maybe 3in at a push. I suppose 6ft1½ can’t be ruled out if Roy’s arguably a bit over 5ft10. Similar zone to McGrath and O’Leary who also claim 6ft2
Editor Rob
From one of those early q&a type things in Shoot, you can see he gave
6ft 1.5, which seems fair for his playing days.

Why does Eriksen look an inch or two taller than Keane with a footwear disadvantage and having just played a 95 minute game and at his extreme low…
Is that just camera angles or what?
Nik Ashton said on 2/Sep/22
In Holland he would be like a 5’7.5” guy in the UK!
Paul_177 said on 1/Sep/22
I've just seen some pics of him with David Beckham.
There looked to be 1.25-1.5" between them.
If Becks is no more than 5' 11" (180 cm), then Roy is 5' 9.75" at most.
This listing is fine still for afternoon.

Wasn't he listed at 5'10.5 or 5'11 in one of the old sticker albums, I used to collect the Premiere League stickers from 1994-1997 I think. More intimidating than some of the big 6'3-6'4 defenders I can think of. A mixture of his non nonsense attitude and his "non f**k with me scowl", bad ass. If I saw that face there
Click Here I'd think I was in a tavern in 18th century Ireland in a bare knuckle boxing fight haha! I don't watch much football nowadays but seeing Keane have a rant is a wonderful thing and makes up for the loss of Alan Hansen!
Editor Rob
Most of the stickers I see are 178cm or 5ft 10, but I'm sure there might be others out there with another value.

Looked only 2" to 2.5" at absolute most on Jermain Defoe the other night, during the England coverage.
Keane can look anything from 5' 9.5" to 5' 10.5" over the years! Sometimes very easily over 5' 10".
I do wonder if the hip issues he experienced could explain it?
Nik Ashton said on 11/Oct/21
I bet he wishes he was 6 foot, many Roy Keane’ s in many parallel worlds would claim it!

Rob, Do you have an estimate on Gary Neville ?
He seems to get listed as 5'11" but I would of guessed him maybe around 5'9.5".
Editor Rob
I had a look a bit at him just now and he has a bigger than average head...I think I can see the argument for closer to 5ft 10 at times.
Click here, between Giggs and Scholes can look near 5ft 10. Scholes claimed 5ft 7 in his biography.

Roy Keane when asked by Gary Neville on The Overlap on YouTube, one thing he could change about his appearance? “I’d probably be a little bit taller”

by bit, I'm assuming an inch or so.

Shearer looked a little taller than Keane during their altercation
Rory said on 2/Jul/21
Yh 179.5 is probably spot on for Shearer. Not the easiest guy to place, looks everywhere from strong 5ft10 to 5ft11 on different occasions. Somewhere in 5ft10.5-10.75 seems plausible.
If eighths were a more common feature id suggest 5ft10 5/8ths for Shearer.
Paul 5' 9.75" said on 23/Jun/21
Rob,
Keane played for Celtic, as you'll remember!
Have you compared him with Celtic players of known heights?
That would be a good way of seeing whether you think he should be upgraded.

John Moore-162cm said on 21/Jun/21
@Paul 5' 9.75" - Keane has always looked 5ft10" to me ... so you can say he's 5ft10.25 earlier in the day, and 5ft9.75 before bed. He is a typical 5ft10 guy.

not less than 6ft 1, maybe he could have been within 6ft 1-2 zone

Looks around the 5’10” mark
Paul 5' 9.75" said on 17/Jun/21
I haven't ruled 5' 11.25" (181 cm) out for Beckham. He's a solid 5' 11".
Shearer could even be 5' 10 5/8th" at his low. Lampard has about 1.5" on him.
Shearer stands with his feet wide apart / and loose posture a lot though.
I've met Lineker, he's 5' 9.75" in person - or was in 2011. Shearer has a good inch on him.
Paul 5' 9.75" said on 17/Jun/21
Rob,
I really think when you compare him with the names below, that Keano deserves no less than a 5' 10.25" listing.
He looks like the perfect example of a 5' 10-10.5" guy.
5' 10 3/8th" could even be spot on.
He's looked 5' 10.5" at least as often as 5' 10" flat.
5' 10.25" (178.4 cm) would be a good compromise.

I think he'd end up listed at 5'10.75. Looked a bit taller than Keane.

nearer 5ft 11 than 10 looked likely, I could see him about 3 inches taller than someone like Owen.

Surprised you think Gary Neville is closer to 5'9" Rob - he never looks more than about 1.5 inches shorter than carragher, and always looked 5'10" on the pitch. Think people get confused by his proportions...
Arch Stanton said on 13/Jun/21
6'1 doesn't look that big compared to 5 ft 10, he's acting as if Zidane was 6'5 or something!
Arch Stanton said on 13/Jun/21
Yes, I wouldn't have put him under 5'10 either, I'd have guessed 5'10.5 actually without knowing what he said or remembering his listing.
Rory said on 13/Jun/21
Id go for 5ft10.5 for Shearer, i dont think id go as high as 5ft10.75. Ive seen him look closer to 5ft10 on more occasions than 5ft11 id say. 10.5 at best, but id probably give him the benefit of the doubt and go 5ft10.5.
miko said on 12/Jun/21
Keane in his footballing days certainly gave off a 5'11/6'0 at times appearance on the pitch, he played bigger than he actually was!
I think 5'10 range is fair for him, definitely not under. If you look at the early squad photos 1993/94 era, he looks the same height as Mark Hughes and taller than the likes of Nicky Butt/Ryan Giggs.
Johnny 181-182 cm said on 12/Jun/21

11 stone
Mon_ami37 said on 12/Jun/21
This seems quite high especially since he himself is claiming he’s a small guy and that there’s a 4 inch difference between him and Zidane also the way he phrases his height in a manner of a rhetorical question seems like he’s unsure about it himself.
Arch Stanton said on 12/Jun/21
A legit badass, not a guy you'd want to get on the wrong side of at any height. 5'10 seems a good shout.
Paul 5' 9.75" said on 12/Jun/21
How about Euro 96 and all-round legend, Alan Shearer?
Another tricky one to pin down. But he often stands with very loose, relaxed posture.
I've got him at 5' 10.75".
Has looked anything from 5' 10" (although rarely), up to 5' 11" at times. Definitely not the 6' 0" he often gets listed at though.
Good people to compare him with are Beckham, Sheringham, Gary Lineker, Ian Wright, Gazza, Frank Lampard, Ronan Keating, Olly Murs, Michael Owen and a few others.
Paul 5' 9.75" said on 12/Jun/21
Gary Neville is about 2 inches shorter than Jamie Carragher, who Rob has at 5' 11.5".
At least 3 inches shorter than Jamie Redknapp, so he's sub 5' 10". Can't see as low as 175 cm though.
Looks half an inch taller than Rooney. A bit less than a few 178 cm guys like Andy Cole, Nicky Butt and Ole. Shorter than Roy Keane too.
Over an inch shorter than Beckham and a couple of cm less than Giggs.
177 cm range for Gary.
Paul 5' 9.75 said on 12/Jun/21
Great addition Rob!
Tricky one to pin down.
This guy has looked anything from 5' 9.5" to 5' 11" at times!
He looks 179 cm a lot; especially if you Google him with people like Ryan Giggs, Sir Alex Ferguson, Robbie Keane, Gary Lineker, Martin O'Neill and a few others.
But has looked 177-178 cm tops at times with Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Ashley Cole, Alan Shearer, etc.
He either gets listed online as 5' 10" (178 cm) or 5' 11" (180 cm).
But maybe a 5' 10.25" (178.4 cm) listing would be better overall?
Wasn't he dogged with hip injuries towards the end of his career? Could that explain it?
Editor Rob
It's possible he is a solid 5ft 10, moreso than a weak one
Matt99 said on 11/Jun/21
Rob how tall do you think Gary Neville is? 5’9-5’9.5? I always saw him as a smaller guy but when looking at him, he looks above 5’9 a lot of the time.
Editor Rob
yeah, I'd have thought closer to 5ft 9 than 10 for Gary
randomdude2021 said on 11/Jun/21
I've met Keane before, honestly think 5'10 is pushing it, he was probably 5'9 1/2, but I think in his prime he was probably around 5'10, these days 5'9 - 5'9.5
John Moore-162cm said on 11/Jun/21
@Rob- Is 5'10" that small for a footballer? I mean he said "small guy and slight"...also i don't think Zidane is 6'2" at all.
Editor Rob
it's within average for footballers
Gladstone Screwer said on 11/Jun/21
Roy not over 5’8”.
Reckinballz said on 11/Jun/21
Good addition Rob! Never seemed anything more than around that 5'10" range, a true 5'10.5" guy like Giggsy always looked taller.
Could you add:
Gary Neville (Seems to be 5'10-5'10.25")
Graeme Souness (Listed 180cm but I saw him in London once and he's definitely below 5'10" at his age now)
Phil Foden (Thought he was 5'7" range but now that Aguero is confirmed 5'8" Foden looks to be 5'8-5'8.25" range)
Angle said on 11/Jun/21
Just goes to show you that the way you carry yourself and your attitude can add an inch or two to your perceived height. If someone told you Keane and Stuart Pearce were six footers you wouldn't bat an eye.
they were giants on the pitch when it came to their attitude and aggression. Solid 5'10 for Keane.
Rory said on 11/Jun/21
That's the thing with Zidane though lots of football people who've played against or met Zidane have commented on his stature. It cant be a coincidence. I think he might be one of those deceptively tall types, can look 6ft0.5-0.75 in pictures with loose posture but in person standing tall a decent 6ft1 you wouldn't rule out.
Nik Ashton said on 11/Jun/21

Miss Sandy Cowell said on 11/Jun/21
Good luck to this guy for being so honest and open about his height. He's an excellent and successful footballer, and proves that you don't need to be well in excess of 6ft to be brilliant at the game. I think being very tall helps, though, if you're a goalkeeper.
5ft10. ⚽😁👍⚽
