Penn is my generation's De Niro, what a guy. Who else would have dumped Madonna??
He always seemed 5'7-5'8 to me.

The one time I saw Sean in person in San Francisco, he was wearing boots and still looked short to me - there's no way he's 5'10". Shorter but I'm not sure how much.
Lots of shorter male actors wear boots and/or lifts.

Bit of a funny story. I have a cousin, one who takes a lot of ribbing from the family because of his short (5'2) stature. He claims he met Sean Penn at an airport and sat with him on the plane. He says that he's short but has an incredibly big head that makes him look taller. He also says he wasn't rude, n fact describing him as a "sweetheart". Weird. I was sure he'd be an ass.

I agree, I don't think Penn is more than 5'8 even max, and probably shorter.

He did look 5-7ish in fast times. He really is no taller then 5-8 Max.

I was watching "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" a few week ago, and I payed attention to the first scne Sean has with Ray Walston. Walston looked about an inch taller. Walston was only about 5'8, maybe a little shorter considering he was 68 at the time. I have taken into consideration that Penn was relativley young at the time, so maybe he hadn't grown to his full height. But still, if Ray had shrunk to about 5'7 - 5'7 1/2 by that time, Sean can't be any more than 5'7.
Trueheight said on 10/Mar/06
how do you explain that?? For those familiar, its the scene in the Bathroom near the begining of the film, after Spicoli has his schedule torn by the old teacher
Trueheight said on 10/Mar/06
Thats funny because in Fast Times, he looks at least 5'9 next to almost 6'0 eric stoltz. both are wearing deck shoes, or surfer sneakers.

My girlfriend met Penn once at the Viennale. His height was about 5'9" to 5'10" (with the help of his heels which were very high (2.5 inches).

look at the photos of penn and robbins standing side by side with their oscars. robbins towers over him by at least a foot.

In Fast times he met eye to eye with Mr. Hand so he is probably 5'8"

I see that Penn is 1.5 inch taller than Pacino in Carlito's Way. Everyone can see that Penn is taller than Pacino, so don't come with comments that they are similiar in height. The comment of McFly also doesn't make any sense.
Pacino looks in that movie similair in height with Luis Guzman and John Leguizamo.

In the movie Carlito's way, Penn is only an inch taller than Pacino, who was maybe at that time 5 ft 7.

He looks clearly 5'8.5-5'9. He's quite stocky giving him the appearance of someone shorter, but there's only about 1.5-2 inches difference between he and Kidman. She, again, has smaller features and is extremely skinny giving her the appearance of someone taller.

Just as I suspected. I skipped the film cause its at least 10 bucks in LA now. For years, people have said that Sean Penn is around 5-6, and I do believe that to be a little low. But I think that he is between 5-7 and 5-8, and I have met Nicole twice and I believe that she is more than 5-10 and not quite 5-11. Usually, they will find ways to lower the height difference if it is around two inches or so, but if the difference is almost 4 inches, the only way to do this is to keep them apart. To his credit, Penn strikes me as the type to avoid boxes and built up shoes, so the director, Sydney Pollack, probably had to develop "creative" forms of camera angles.

I was on this site because I too noticed that the only time the actors were shot together was when they were both sitting. It got me curious as to how short he is. The final scene is akward in that he doesn't even get down from a railing to properly say goodbye to someone we're suposed to believe he cares deeply for. PS-Overall the movie is a slow bore with a couple of great actors, which is why it got any positive reviews at all. Without the star power I don't believe anyone would even recommend this movie.

I saw the movie this weekend which is why I'm on this website. The NEVER STOOD next to one another. They were sitting, he was on the top of a step, she at the bottom, and in the last shot, he was sitting on a railing (never got off of it) and she was standing.
