I have read Kristel's autobiography, Sandy, and there is little in it to suggest that she was particularly sexual in real life. She has plenty to say about drug addiction and alcoholism, but nothing at all about sex. She seems to have been a rather shy woman, and certainly she always seemed intelligent and gentle, which might have enhanced her erotic appeal. Rather tellingly, she seems to have had romantic attachments only with men who were considerably older. McShane, for example, had her by ten years.

Call me cynical, but whenever somebody young and attractive has a nude scene in a movie, I believe the idea was to sell tickets. Compile a list of accomplished actors and actresses in movies who have done critical nudity, and it's a pretty extensive list. Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, multiple times. Julianne Moore. Helena Bonham Carter. In actors, Kevin Costner (at least twice) Richard Gere (three times that I can remember), Mel Gibson. Gerard Depardieu. Robert DeNiro.

Or course, any movie with Kristel as the star was sold as an erotic movie, so she acquired a reputation that other actors didn't as a sex star. She had an active career of more than a decade, which is a pretty good run for a woman with no real talent other than great beauty.

Sylvia had a much publicised affair with Ian McShane. There were pictures all over the newspapers, but they were taken in a thoroughly misleading way. Ian never looked shorter than Sylvia, but he was - by some one-and-a-half inches.

What a shame she only lived for 60 years.

Kristel is often described as an erotic film actress, but that is a bit of stretch, since she did so little nudity. If you take out a stopwatch and clock the screen time where she shows critical nudity in Emmanuelle, it's less than three minutes. Kind of a rip-off, actually, although she was so spectacularly beautiful that the small amount of nudity she did do was enough to sell several million tickets to what is otherwise a pretty lousy movie.

Charlton Heston probably logged thirty times as much screen time shirtless as Sylvia Kristel, but nobody ever called him an erotic film actor.

At last, the Sylvia Kristel page, and thank you. What took you so long? Kristel is my favourite human who has ever been in a movie, which I'll admit is pretty strange since all her movies were appallingly bad, and her only gifts were astonishing beauty (which didn't last past her fortieth birthday) and a sweet, almost childlike personality.

I would have said before reading her listing here that she was five foot nine, and I am something of an expert on the subject of her body as it appears on film. I am still slightly crazed with admiration for her beauty after all these years.

I am interested in Kristel's physique in the same way that many people are interested in the physiques of Arnold Schwarzenegger or Steve Reeves. You notice that male actors who trade on the beauty of their bodies torture themselves to get the look that makes them appealing. Women with beautiful bodies just turn eighteen and show up in front of a camera.

Yeah she's pretty. I don't think all tall girls have horse faces. Also 5'9" is quite tall for a woman, I think it's like the equivalent of being a 6'2" guy or something like that.

Been indulging in a bit of classic French erotica Rob LOL or was this a request? I've seen the 1974 film and Black Emanuelle I think. Should never have become a series LOL, but just tells you a lot about tastes in the 70s ;-) I remember her with short hair I think, and yes, I remember thinking that she was quite skinny in the chest department given that it was such a film! A touch of the Kristen Stewart about her.
