British actor best remembered for his role as M in the James Bond films. He also appeared in movies such as The Third Man, Dunkirk, Whistle Down the Wind, The Purple Plain, The Battle of River Plate and Kidnapped.

Rob, what peak height would suit Lee Montague? 5’9.25”?
Lee had more or less three inches on Montague in The Secret Partner, and John Nettles noticeably edged out Montague in Bergerac.

Nothing over 6 ft with Connery in his mid 50s... Must have lost a bit by then..
Sinclair said on 11/Apr/22
Yes, still a strong six footer by the early Bond years.
JamesFreakingBond said on 26/Mar/21
Looked 6'0 ish with Connery and Moore.

He had a good 4 inches on Gordon Jackson in the 1960 film Cone Of Silence and looked like a tall and large built man next to the rest of the cast. He was a very solid 6'0, but maybe lost a bit as he aged.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Apr/17
Looked a comfortable 2 inches taller than William Holden in the Key, 6'0.5 looks spot on.
James said on 19/Jan/17
He was actually six foot.
Arch Stanton said on 1/Nov/16
Spot on I think.

how tall do you think his successor Robert Brown was, Rob?
Editor Rob
could have been near to 5ft10

Lee was terrific in The Third Man.

Llewelyn at times edged Connery
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/14
Oh apologies I was thinking this was the Desmond Llewelyn page. He looked a weak 6' by Bond days but peak he did look 6'0.5" with Peck and Cotten.
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/14
No he wasn't Rampage. In the early Connery ones they looked about the same height and I believe even with Timothy Dalton he was close.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 23/Dec/14
Rob, is there a possibility that he was more 182-183cm when he played M?
He was substantially shorter than both Connery and Moore
Editor Rob
I think he had lost some height by then yes.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Dec/14
How about completing the Bond set with Walter Gotell? He had a number of notable roles, ones in The Guns of Navarone and Ice Cold in Alex spring to mind. With Anthony Quayle in Ice Cold he was looking 6'2.5" and Guns of Navarone I was thinking 6'2-6'2.5" range. Perhaps 6'2.25 might be a good shout. He was still looking 6'2 in later years I think.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Dec/14
Rob can you squeeze in The Battle of the River Plate too, one of his best roles.
Sam said on 22/Dec/14
Good addition...he was especially good in The Third Man. I guess he did look a solid inch under Joseph Cotten, sometimes maybe a bit more.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Dec/14
Spot on I think thanks, can you add The Battle of the River Plate too, one of his best roles.
