How tall is Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson's Height

5ft 8 (172.7 cm)

Peak height was 5ft 9 ½ (176.5 cm)
American actor best known for roles in films like The Shining, Batman, Easy Rider, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, The Departed and Anger Management. Carol Kane once said in Screen Stories Magazine: "Jack prefers the actresses with whom he works to be on the short side. I wasn't tall, so I was immediately in. The reason for this is that he is no more than five foot seven or so himself. When he has no other choice but to play opposite a lanky actress, he will wear elevator shoes"

In a 1994 book 'Jack's Life', the author mentioned how "he stopped growing at fine nine and a half.""
He's no heavy. I could take him with one hand. He's a balding, middle-aged, midget. Did you know he was only five foot seven?

He was taller than Michael Keaton in Batman 1989 though barely an inch. I doubt Nicholson was over 5'9" in 1988 cause Keaton was barely 5'10" in mugshots in the 80s. Mugshots give the 3-4 inch rule. Hair and dress shoes.

Definitely 5'9.5" peak. He's 5'7.5" now. I think he would edge Robert De Niro and Anthony Hopkins.

Wow, so Michael Keaton is approximately 5'7". But if he was only 5'7", Keaton is 5'6". I mean, he is known as the short Batman.

Current Heights:
Michael Keaton• 5'7"
Jack Nicholson• 5'8"

Peak Heights:
Michael Keaton• 5'8"
Jack Nicholson: 5'9"

He looked about 5 ft 10 in the 60s and 70s I thought. Same with Richard Burton but both probably around 5'9.5. I can't see 5 ft 9 flat, 5 ft 8 is silly.

No less than 5'9" in «One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest». One of my favourite.
A solid 5'9" impression in "The Shining" (1980).

It certainly looks very unlikely that he would measure anything under 5ft 9 in his prime for sure. 5ft 9.25 would be the least i could argue. Even though he does have the body proportions and the face of someone, that could be shorter. A Jack Nicholson in standard dress shoes looks noticeably taller than Shelly Duvall in 2-inch heels in The Shining.
Sandy Cowell said on 11/Dec/22
I’ve seen a fair few of Jack’s films at the pictures, and loved them all except for Batman. I even saw a special showing of Easy Rider in a West End cinema after work when I was 19. It was showing with a film called The Trip, with Peter Fonda, who also starred in Easy Rider. Both actors were in top form. Then I saw The Shining three times in a week, the Witches of Eastwick, which my Mum loved when I showed it to her on the TV, and of course, Batman. Superhero films are rarely my cup of tea and I promptly fell asleep! What a waste of money!

5ft9.5 peak and 5ft8 today.

Editor Rob
Was watching some behind scenes clips a few weeks ago, and I don't think Jack looked under 5ft 9 on the set of The Shining.
jokey said on 24/Sep/22
@Rob any chance that he was 5'9.75 at his peak? He was eye to eye with louise fletcher, sometimes he edged her out in that cuckoo's nest film. He gave me a solid 177cm impression in that film, extremely close to 5'10.
Editor Rob
I can see how close they looked.

A few nights ago, I wanted to see bits of the Live Aid 1985 concert, and that included watching a rather stoned-out trio of Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. They came on well towards the end, and it was no mystery how they’d been filling their waiting time! 🥴🥴🥴 I looked at my boyfriend and he at me, and we burst into fits of hysterical giggles! 😂😂📺🎶

One thing that I didn’t recall was that Jack Nicholson introduced the guys. As usual, his posture was good and he could even have passed for 5ft10.
The Batman 97808 said on 7/Jul/22
Could Nicholson have been 5'10 peak? He had about an half inch on 5'9 Michael Keaton plus he was about 51 during filming so he had probably shrunk a little bit at that time.

During my weeks away, I watched ‘The Shining’ and wanted to compare and contrast it to the far truer-to-the-book elongated Stephen King’s version, but I could only play the final part as the rest of my old DVD is unwatchable.

However, I saw enough to say that I preferred Jack’s take on Jack Torrance, though Steven Weber is still good. Jack Nicholson plays such an incredible ‘nutcase’, and is funny with it. Not surprisingly, I saw Stanley Kubrick’s version three times in a week, and I saw Jack in ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ when it came out and a special showing of ‘Easy Rider’ in London’s West End when I was 19 - all great stuff.

Now for his height: Jack has starred with some tall people during his career, but his physique is such that he can be taken for a highly respectable 5ft10 or just under at the peak of his career so I will settle for 5ft9.5 for his peak and 5ft8.25.
for his height today.

Jack Nicholson is FANTASTIC, and I have another biker film of his. ‘Hell’s Angels On Wheels’, to watch as soon as I get round to it. 🏍

I sort of doubt Nicholson was ever taller than 5-8 because he’s at least an inch shorter than Perry Lopez in Chinatown. Lopez was around 5-9. I know because I met him many years ago. Nice man. well in his 70's Glover was shorter than myself, but 2 inch loss by then was possible, maybe 5ft 9 peak

I would guess around Rob's height more than what is listed. He looked shortish in every movie I ever saw him in. Optimistically, he could have been 5'9 1/2 in the morning and shrunk down to 5'9 flat, but no more. He looked shorter or at best the same height as 5'8 Shelly Duvall. Having read the book, he didn't quite look the way I would have pictured Jack Torrance to look in part because of his height. He had a big frame for a shorter guy and a commanding presence so people overestimate.

@ Arch Stanton - Hi there Arch! In 'One Flew Over....', Jack was definitely his peak height and 5 years later, when he made 'The Shining', he still looked his optimum height, the same as in 'Easy Rider' from 1969, which I saw at a special showing in the West End in 1980 with 'The Trip', two brilliant Peter Fonda films together.

I wouldn't dismiss 5ft10 for Jack's peak, but I'm going with 5ft9.75. For today's height, Jack gets 5ft8.

Cheers Arch! 😁👍 XXX

🎁🎂🎈🎊 Happy Birthday Jack! 🎊🎈🎂🎁

The lovable Jack Nicholson celebrates his Birthday today. Let's wish this Golden Great a fabulous time! 🏆📀

When Jack made 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' in 1975, he was described as a 38-year-old male. He must have been that age too, because now the figures have been switched round as today, 45 years on, Jack turns 8️⃣3️⃣ - WOW! Isn't it frightening how the time just zooms by? 🕰️⏳🎬

I've been fortunate enough to see Jack on the Silver Screen 14 times. I saw 'The Shining' 3 times in a week in 1980, and in that same year, I was privileged to see a special showing in London's West End one evening (with two of my mates) of 'Easy Rider' coupled with Peter Fonda's 'The Trip'. Like a fish out of water, I ambled along to catch Jack play the Joker in 'Batman', which isn't my normal type of film at all and I nodded off towards the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Witches of Eastwick' in Beckenham one evening in 1987 after work. Then there was the sad but beautiful movie, which almost slipped my mind, called 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' which I caught with my then boyfriend's curly-haired, fun-packed brother, Rob, in 1981. Jack starred with the adorable Jessica Lange and I openly cried at the end of that movie; all the other visits to the cinema were to see the rock opera 'Tommy'; Jack plays the suave, handsome and flirtatious Specialist in that film and the year was 1976, but it was made in 1975.

I think it's a fair assumption to say that I've very likely seen Jack at the cinema more times than any other star. He came over as tall to me - never just average, but then his confidence and larger-than-life characters contributed to that. I wouldn't have thought he was much below 5ft11 owing to said confidence. When you see him with Shelley Duvall walking into the Overlook Hotel in 'The Shining', he doesn't come over as anything but tall. Mind you, I thought Shelley was about 5ft8, (I'll double check that later), and Jack is taller than her in her boots, adding still more fuel to my fire that Jack had to be tallish.

He was superior in height to all three witches in 'The Witches of Eastwick' too, and they aren't exactly pint-sized!

So before I get carried away yet further, I'd better get round to casting my votes. I've given enough evidence to back up why I thought Jack Nicholson was taller than average, so I refuse to go lower than 5ft10 for his peak. Eh, to me that's quite tall, and realistically, it's high average. For nowadays, Jack will get 5ft8.5.

Once again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK! 💎

🎁🎂🎈🎊🎁🎂🎈🎊🎁🎂🎈🎊🎁🎂🎈🎊

In ‘As Good As It Gets’ (1997), Jack Nicholson appears to be about 1.5” shorter than the 5’9.5” Greg Kinnear. That would have made him about 5’8” flat, back then. So, I’d say that Nicholson’s absolute peak height was probably 5’9.5” to 5’10”.

I wouldn't go down to 5'7" but there's a chance that Nicholson peaked closer to 5'9" than a half over it, Robert De Niro looked similar back in The Last Tycoon, Art Garfunkel looked to edge him out in Carnal Knowledge and Bruce Dern pretty much towered him in The King of Marvin Gardens. On the hand, he looked the same or edged out Michael Keaton in Batman and even looked 5'9" range near his The Departed co-stars, so maybe he's just a guy who didn't lose much height, despite the 1.5 inch loss listed here.

I would evisit the 5'-7" height. Look at him in Goin' South with Nary Steenburgen (listed as 5'-8"). Assume he is wearing cowboy boots and they are still the same height.
When they are seated together on the wagon he is clearly shorter. Women usually have shorter upper bodies, longer legs. I saw the movie and was surprised at how short he appeared. Click Here

I would be surprised if Jack Nicholson was actually over 5’9” at any point in his life. He looks like he’s been 5’7” or under since he made ‘As Good As It Gets’ in 1997. He’s also worked with other actors who are slightly under 6 feet tall who appear to have at least 4 inches of height on him. I’ve always believed that if actresses can wear heels for a role, that their male co-stars should be able to wear lifts — to show a ‘reasonably accurate’ height comparison between the various actors on screen.

Yeah, being overweight and hunched over at 5'8" will make you look short, but even with a prime Carl Weathers, Burt didn't look more than maybe 5" shorter face to face and definitely taller than Macchio, who was what? 5'7.5" in '86? De Niro was named as a lift wearer once by the guy who made elevators for Stallone, Burt Reynolds, Michael Douglas, Shatner and others so I see no reason to doubt it. A weak 5'9", maybe 5'8.5" movie star will have at least the occasional use for an extra inch.

Actually, not so much posture, but for body type, Jack sort of became like Burt as he got older and heavier. You see him in his 30's and 40's and never looks shortish to me, yet once he got to middle age and put on a lot of weight, I could see how some would think he was short even though he probably didn't even lose that much until his 70's.
The Shredder said on 22/Nov/17
I agree , I think Burt was a guy that could have been between 5'8 and 5'9 , but just gave a shorter impression do to his shape and postue and De Niro a lift wearer , Explains why they both own Ralph Maccchio.
Rising - 174 cm said on 19/Nov/17
Jack really didn't look much taller than Burt Young in Chinatown except when Burt slouched. Both standing similarly, the difference didn't look much more than an inch to me. Somewhere from 5'9" to 5'9.5" in his prime and probably about 5'8" today, maybe even a weak 5'8".
KH said on 15/Nov/17
There really isn't a lot of difference betwen 5'9.5 and 5'8 or so and some people are petty thats where the whole short thing with Nicholson started. He looked about average height to me before he got old and lost significant height just like everyone else does. Regardless of height one of my favorite actors.
Bwk said on 4/Nov/17

is Jack back in some film, if so yeah I think nearly 2 inches shorter than his peak might be possible...he was out of the limelight for a few years
Rising - 174 cm said on 29/Sep/17
Jtm is right, he is pretty difficult to pin down. Was he taller than 5'8.75" Marlon Brando? The most recent comparison I've seen of Jack is the 2013 Oscars when Jack looked about 5'8" to me. But let me guess, Danimal, you just used the average from that survey you obsess over and subtracted it from what you think Jack's peak height is, right? And max implies Jack might have lost even more than that, which makes it seem to me that you're conflating average and minimum. If your interpretation of that survey were correct then the averages would be much higher.

Rising - 174 cm said on 19/Sep/17
Yeah, he was at least a 5'9" guy. He's probably 5'8" max NOW at 80 years old, but back in the 70s? No way. Hell, even a 69-70 year old Jack could still oddly pass for 5'9" at times, though I'm sure he was not taller than 5'8.5" by that time. Imo, the question is whether Jack was just a 5'9" guy or whether he was 5'9.5". I've not seen much evidence to suggest a downgrade is in order. And while he did wear boots in The Shining and Cuckoo's Nest with taller leading ladies, I've also seen nothing to suggest they were anything more than normal 3 cm range boots, much less the rumor he had lifts. The 5'7"-5'8" stuff is the typical things you hear for any male superstar of merely average height.

in Cuckoo's Nest with Louise Fletcher, he really wasn't much different, certainly 5ft 8 looks impossible then.

In Hollywood, the cliché is that publicists shave two years off your age and add two inches to your height. So if the p.r. people say that Nicholson is 5'9'', it's likely that he's actually 5'7'' . . . which is exactly the height that Oliver Reed and Carole Kane say he is. I, too, believe he's 5'7'' (5'8'' in shoes) from a careful examination of his movies. Look at him here, next to 5'8'' Shelley Duvall: Click Here He's about an inch shorter. (And notice that she's forced to wear flats. All his leading ladies were.) On this thread, people say, "But he looked taller than her in 'The Shining'." That's an illusion caused by the fact that he's more physically robust. (He has more body mass.) It's why Orson Welles was 6' according to his autopsy, but people routinely thought he was 6'3'' or even 6'4''. His girth made him appear taller than he actually was. Brando was a beneficiary of the same effect. 5'8 1/2'' due to his military records, but he gave the impression of a much taller man . . . especially in his fat period. Check out Brando and Nicholson side by side: Click Here Clearly, Nicholson is about 5'7''. Oliver Reed and Carole Kane weren't exaggerating. They were giving his legit height. Which is clearly traumatic to a lot of people on this thread who are desperate to perpetuate the fake publicist height.

Not just Reed. Carol Kane said the exact same thing and in the 1975 article on Robert Redford's height, it said "Well, that’s another article (as is Jack Nicholson who they say is only five-feet-eight)." So the idea Nicholson was only 5'7"-5'8" must have been pretty widespread back then. I'd understand it better if it was Jack from middle age on when he gained weight and gave a shortish impression. But the younger, thinner Jack in his 30s and early 40s didn't give a short impression to me.
James said on 28/Aug/17
I think people assume Nicholson was short because of what Oliver Reed said.
Rising - 174 cm said on 27/Jul/17
He did wear boots in The Shining as well: Click Here If Carol Kane is right about Jack wearing lifts with taller leading ladies then that'd be a movie to do it considering how tall Shelley Duvall is. But seeing how Jack looked with Shelley Duvall, he'd be shorter than we think if he was wearing lifts so I'd say normal boots. Of course, it also depends on whether Stone actually was 180 cm.

As I said recently, I can't argue with anything from 5'9" to 5'9.5" in Jack's prime, but I think the 5'9.5" may come from somewhere so it's probably the best guess until someone presents compelling evidence to the contrary. Which isn't to say that with more scrutiny we may not find him shorter. I do think there's a good chance Jack was struggling with by the late 90s and if you look at some golf pics in 2002, a 65 year old Jack could look 5'8"-5'8.5" max with Sly Stallone, but mysteriously, 4-5 years later, he starts looking more like 5'9" at some events for The Bucket List and the Departed.
RichardSpain said on 27/Jul/17
I watched "The Shining" last night next to actor Philip Stone (180 cm) Nicholson seems 175 cm/176cm.

Typically, I don't read much into non-full pics, but I do think this is an example of why Jack should be put at no higher than 5'8" flat when he gets a current height: Click Here There are times in that series from the 2013 Oscars where Jack can look a bit taller if we go by Clooney and Affleck's listed height, but those 2 drop height with posture and Clooney, I do think has been below 5'10.5" anyway since turning 50. But if Grant Heslov is 5'9" he had to be at least an inch taller than Jack at that time. 4 years later, a bit more loss is possible, but Jack is tricky. I can buy anything from 5'9"-5'9.5" peak and he probably falls into that weak 5'8" range today, though I wouldn't be surprised if he uses lifts when his next movie comes out. I have no proof of that, but he's seemed like an occasional lift wearer since his 60s and 70s.

He could pass for that until About Schmidt, in recent years. Good genetics,in my opinion.

Jack still looked to be hanging on to about 5'8" with Clooney, Affleck and 5'9" Grant Heslov at the 2013 Oscars: Click Here
But Jack at age 61 did look under 5'9" with Dustin Hoffman in a series of pics. Here's an example: Click Here
Strangely, at events for the Bucket List, I never saw Jack look any more than 5" shorter than 6'2" Morgan Freeman: Click Here

I'll be interested to see how tall Jack looks when his next movie premieres. Just like at 70 years old with Freeman, Jack at age 69 did look a good 5'9" at the Departed premiere with Damon, DiCaprio and Wahlberg, which made me wonder if he's worn lifts over the years. Not sure about his exact peak, but I've never suspected he was under 5'9" back then, but I'd be surprised if he was ever the full 5'10". What did he claim 5'10"? 5'11"?

@ baja74 - Hello mate! I hope you are well!
I too am very fond of Jack Nicholson, as you will have gathered reading my comment on him! Apart from seeing him on the big screen 3 times in a week in 'The Shining', I also saw him cinema-sized in 'The Witches of Eastwick', 'Tommy' (7 times!), and at a special showing of 'Easy Rider' in a Peter Fonda double bill, with a film called 'The Trip'!
That's 14 times I've seen Jack at the cinema! Of course, he plays a wonderful head case in 'The Shining' - the best! He saw and loved the remake and he would have enjoyed taking on the lead in that as well, but he was too old. I have copies of both films; the remake is much truer to the book, but I rate them both, and for comedic value - apart from at the end - you can't beat 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', a true masterpiece, deserving of its awards!
Have a good weekend Beja!

Sandy,
Easily my favorite actor. And yes his role as R.P.M in Cuckoo's Nest was great. I thought he was the best Jack Torrence in The Shining as well. Not that Steven Webber's role in the TV movie was bad. But Jack is the man when it comes to playing crazy. He's definitely old fashioned. I hear he doesn't even own a cell phone.
As for his height, I don't see that he has changed that much. His weight, yes! But not his height. So, a good solid 5'9" sounds good.
Always a pleasure to read your posts!

I just saw a clip "behind the scenes on the shining." It was the scene where Jack's character is about to break down the bathroom door with an axe. I happened to notice one of the stage people walking around and he was nearly as tall as the door. When Jack was near the door he looked to be of average height. Either the stage person was nearly 7' tall or they cut down the door so Jack wouldn't appear so short. Who knows. Regardless, he's a great actor.

I'm surprised he's doing another film, I thought he was done for good! Without seeing a recent comparison I'd imagine he's struggling with 5'8" now at best.

No more than average height for Jack, though his acting is far and away the sort that puts him among my top 10 actors.
It doesn't matter how many times I see 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', I still enjoy it. His character 'R.P. McMurphy' goes into that psychiatric ward and shows 'the boys' how to live a little! They love him; the system does not!
There are actors of enormously varying heights in that film. Thinking about it, I cannot cite another film with such alarming differences, right from 4ft10 Danny DeVito to Will Samson, the giant Indian guy! Jack is about as average as it can get!
In Stanley Kubrick's 'the Shining', in my humble opinion I don't think that working with tall-and-skinny Shelley Duvall makes him come over as any shorter! She looks tall, probably taller than she is! Jack seems about 5ft9.75, dangerously unhinged and very strong! I saw the film three times the week it came out! The usherette said "you like this film?"
I thought Jack was rather suave in Tommy, though of average height! I have other films of his, including 'Easy Rider', but I have not made any serious comparisons yet.
I will go with 5ft9. I think he has been taller in his prime and he'll be a bit shorter now.

I have to tell ya rob, you always list them taller than they really are. I mean, not by much, you do tend to give them the benefit of the doubt when there is room to doubt, or maybe you're just measuring their height by addition of the typical shoe increase.. In Jack Nicholson's case, I would say in his younger years his evening height would be around 5'8.5 to 5'9, you can tell this if you watched Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, and Chinatown. His footwear varies between 0.5 to 1.5 inches and even sometimes 2 inches (think Carnal Knowledge and Five Easy Pieces he wears those cowboy heels). Anyway, very cool guy, definitely a prominent male figure and no doubt a chick magnet but if we account for his average shoe height I would agree with your listing. All of the movies in theaters nowadays are mostly action scenes layered on top of hammy dialogue, wooden characters, and overuse of CGI. watching the last detail right now and he looks really short, but that's next to a few tall co-stars including Randy Quaid.
Sbu said on 7/Jan/13
Rob, what would you estimate Jack's weight at in earlier films like Easy Rider?
Editor Rob
maybe 160 range
Larc-186.7cm-188.6cm said on 17/Dec/12
Looked close enough to 5'10 in Batman, maybe he was just an hair under that at peak.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Nov/12
5 ft 7 is a joke Carol Kane! He consistently looks average height in his films.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Nov/12
Watching Anger Management now, looks the same height as Sandler.
The Exorcist said on 11/Nov/12
Looking 5 (ish) inches shorter than Morgan Freeman. Nowadays, he's 5'9" max.

Hi Rob I know this is off topic but would you recommend Jack's Life? I'm looking for a good bio of Nicholson.

As for his height I would say a strong 5'9" peak but I don't see him as 177 cm.
Editor Rob
I haven't read anything like that so can't really recommend anything.
MaskDeMasque said on 29/Sep/12
He did look about 176cm in The Shining.
Dmeyer said on 6/Sep/12

The other week I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was made in 1975 when Nicholson presumably was at his peak height.
Even then he didn't look five nine and a half, he was shorter than the vast majority of his co stars, I would say he was 5'8.5" at his peak, now maybe 5'8" or a shade under. If he now wears eleveator shoes as the comment claims it would be hard to tell though.
Sam said on 30/Jan/12
So Rob, you think Jack Nicholson at his peak is a half an inch over Robert De Niro at his?
Lenad said on 2/Dec/11
i doubt hes any taller than 174cm now.
LAN Jiao said on 2/Nov/11
in the departed premiere nicholson does not even look 2" shorter than leonardo dicaprio listed 5'11.5 lol.. atually he does't look over 5'7.75 now so leo could be 5'9.25 or so..haha
buddy said on 3/Sep/11
I met him in Vancouver when he was filming that movie that Sean Penn directed, he was at least 2 inches shorter than me and I'm 5'9.5". I didn't look at his shoes.
lorne said on 3/Sep/11
[Editor Rob: lorne, can you stick to using that name and not legends etc]

LOL yeah sorry Rob.It was mainly a joke, but also a kind of experiment.I mean, you know as well as I do that Legend downgrades everyone on here; Brad Pitt is 5'9.5 max, Tom Cruise is 5'7 max and could be "much less" Arnold was 5'11, the list goes on.I wanted to see if I put 2 oe 3 ridiculous estimates under his name, if anyone would buy it.And most people did!So take that for what ya will.

Anyway, just havin a little fun, sorry if I inconvenienced you, and it won't happen again.(and thnx for takin it lightly, since he didn't)
lorne said on 29/Aug/11
[Editor Rob: whether 5ft 9.5 or 10, you could argue anywhere in the 5ft 9-10 range.]

Exactly. I'll grant the downgraders that 5ft8.75in was possible, but nothing less.I say 175-176cm peak, 174cm absolute minimum, 177 cm, absolute max.He looked a weak average, and he was.5'7 claims are ridicilous, remember, people suck at guessing height.
Maximus Meridius said on 26/Aug/11
Rob is it possible he was 5ft 10 at his peak and 5ft 9in now
Editor Rob
whether 5ft 9.5 or 10, you could argue anywhere in the 5ft 9-10 range.

Rob , What would you guess his weight in Batman ?

Editor Rob
maybe close to 180

5ft8, about average I reckon, today closer to 5ft7.

Rob , what would you guess his weight at for Celebweights ?

Editor Rob
it's creeped up a lot, at times 200-210 range, in youth 50 punds lighter.
the shredder said on 31/May/11
Rob , I think he had lifts in the film ... Look here at 1:20 ... He looks 5'11 or 6'0 next to 6'3 Jack Palance ... Click Here
the shredder said on 26/May/11
Rob , Do you think he used lifts in Batman ? ... Look with Keaton .

How tall do you think he was around that , 5'9 ?

Editor Rob
I think they were pretty close, I don't know if he wore lifts though in that film.
Mr. Kaplan said on 25/May/11
Jack has always been 5'8" or so. With clowns like Bieber saying they're 5'8", people expect a 5'8" person to be short, but it isn't. Fairly average height.
Truthman said on 23/May/11
1) Jack Nicholson is not 5'9, he is 5'8
2) Didn't you notice this HUGE elevator shoes Pesci wearing on this photo?

What kind of 5'9" guy has calves nearly shorter than someone who's been listed as short as 5'3" or 5'2"?

Not only that, but the way they are sitting, Jack barely looks bigger than Pesci...
Lenad said on 21/Apr/11
I'd say somewhere 5'9 range in his day. He never looked short to me. Distinctly average height
Bubba said on 16/Apr/11
he's 5'7". Take a look at him when he was young in Carnal Knowledge or 5 Easy Pieces.
kookierx said on 27/Mar/11
yup MAXIMUM 5-9 in youth

now looks 8.5" or even 8" SOLID
Rob said on 26/Mar/11
Rob I have a question... With a 5'9 1/2 person saying they were much taller than Jackson how is it you still manage to list him as 5'9 1/2..?
me said on 19/Feb/11
I think 5.9.5 is correct. He was a couple inches taller than shelly duvall in the shining. He was definately wearing lifts in the movie, but Duvall was also on 3 inch heels, so it balances it out. If Duvall is 5.8, then he is 5.8 then he has to be from 5.9.5 to 5.10 in 1980.
Lenad said on 27/Jan/11
Solid 5'9 at his peak
Legend said on 19/Jan/11
He was never over 5'9
Mr. Kaplan said on 27/Dec/10
There is a shot of him walking BAREFEET with 5'7" Shirley MacLaine in "Terms of Endearment". He's only one inch taller. 5'8" peak.
TruebloodFan said on 26/Dec/10
Greg Kinnear looked his height or a cm taller in 'As good as it gets'. I saw it again yesterday. 177cm peak is possible. However Kinnear is listed 177cm here, and when i saw him next to Nicholson, no way he is 177cm...175cm for Kinnear.
John said on 16/Dec/10
I can end the debate as to how tall he was, although I don't know about now. I played in the group in front of him at Bel-Air CC in 2000, and passed by him shoulder to shoulder on the 10th bridge, just him and me. I am exactly 70" (5'10") tall without shoes. We were both wearing cleats, and Jack and I were the exact same height.
Dennis said on 10/Dec/10
I met him last year at the New Jersey Hall of Fame ceremony and i am 5'7 and he was slightly taller than me. it was a black tie affair so that was in dress shoes so i would say he was 5'8 to 5'9. if someone can tell me if there is a way to post it i will upload the picture i took with him so you can check it out.

We saw Jack tonight in NYC. My 13 year old son towered over him. My son is 5'10. I would venture to say he is MAYBE 5'7 with shoes on.
Chris said on 30/Nov/10
Standing next to Adam Sandler, I'd say 5'8.5 is correct. Maybe 5'9
Jack Torrance said on 20/Nov/10
Jack isn't quite as tall now as he was...as far as I can tell, he's about 5'7" or so. As for being "well into his 70's", he's 73...
Mr. Kaplan said on 28/Oct/10
He looked as short as he ever did in OFOTCN. 5'7". If that.
