@Legend 176.8 cm: As I mentioned in my last post, I would have said De Niro was 169 cm or 5'6.5" range if forced to guess from 10 feet away around that exact time in September 2019. I assume he would have looked a bit taller up close but I have an uncle around De Niro's age who was about my height until his late 70s and is finally not over 172 cm since about 80 and even with posture typical of men that age, he definitely still seems taller than De Niro did 5 years ago. Niro's posture got worse and he looked to lose at least 1-2 cm more between age 70-75. But De Niro was still 170-171 cm range or at least 5'7" in 2016 since he was definitely still taller than Roberto Duran, whom Rob met and said was 5'6.5" himself by then, iirc.
Late 2000s or around age 65, I still think De Niro could have possibly even measured 5'8" flat or at least 172 cm. If Matt Damon is 5'9.5" then De Niro could still look about 5'8" with him aged 68 in these full pictures from 2011:
Click Here Click Here Even with the camera advantage in the 2nd picture, Damon does not look a full 2" taller. But aged 70, De Niro does look 1.5" shorter than Stallone in normal dress shoes:
Click Here It's not clear if Stallone had lost any height by age 67 so I think he hadn't lost more than 1/4" at most. But Stallone was never taller than about 5'9" flat or 175 cm. Cop Land was a rare film in which Sly didn't wear lifts, but you can see De Niro was slightly shorter in the ending scene when they're walking away or even more clearly in this picture taken on set:
Click Here De Niro still seemed to be at his peak height then in the mid-1990s or 53 years old. But he couldn't have been taller than 5'8.5" since there's a chance Stallone was as short as that height peak or 174 cm, although I think at least 5'8.75" or 174.5 to 175 cm seems more likely for Sly.
Interestingly in light of De Niro putting 5'11" on his early CV in the 1960s, his character in Bang The Drum Slowly also claimed 5'11". I'll have to check again how he looked compared to David Proval in Mean Streets but I suppose it is not impossible he was already wearing lifts to appear taller on screen. He did actually appear close to Jack Nicholson's height in The Last Tycoon, but maybe Jack was closer to 5'9" than 5'9.5" himself since De Niro otherwise appeared a bit under 5'9" in that film.

He was 5'7.5" during the late 2000s. By 2019 he was already under 5'7".
Rising174cm said on 27/Nov/24
5'8.75" seems the tallest he could have been in The Last Tycoon based on the fact that De Niro was definitely not taller than Tony Curtis who is listed here at that height and even ignoring the probability that Dana Andrews had shrunk a bit by 67 years old, he still looked a good 3 cm taller than De Niro in a wide shot. In fact, more than a decade later, in the late 80s, Tony Curtis, then in his 60s, looked taller than De Niro at an event! Regarding Cape Fear, Nick Nolte is a good reference at 6'0" and I certainly think he could have had more than just 3" on De Niro. 5'11.5" Ray Liotta also seemed more likely to be 3" taller than De Niro than just 2.5" and I'm not at all sure that De Niro didn't wear lifts for some scenes in Goodfellas.
Rob has speculated that De Niro may have worn lifts in his appearances on stage in 1986 with Ralph Macchio and Burt Young. De Niro was a customer of the shoemaker who made elevator shoes for Stallone, Burt Reynolds, Michael Douglas, and Robert Blake among others. At least one article on that specifically stated that the shoemaker was rumored to have made elevator shoes for De Niro as well. To be clear, I don't think De Niro has typically worn lifts outside of film roles, but this would explain why Mean Streets was a rare film in which De Niro could look 5'9"+ yet there's a photo of De Niro and Harvey Keitel barefoot during the filming and the two look surprisingly close in height even considering Keitel's camera advantage.
Even when he filmed We're No Angels with Sean Penn in the late 80s, it was clear he was closer in height to Penn than a 69-year-old Charles Bronson was in 1991. I'd definitely reverse their listings with Bronson an example of a 5'9" guy and De Niro more likely to have been 5'8.75". Mike Tyson does have a camera advantage in that picture, but even in other pictures, it is clear enough that he was at least 2" taller than the 64-year-old De Niro. The picture above with Pacino was taken later that same year just after De Niro turned 65 and De Niro looks under 5'8" with Pacino. I've seen him look a full 5'8" in other full pictures from that time with Pacino, but no taller, and generally wasn't looking above 172 cm at age 64-65. If you look at the Killer Elite premiere, 172 cm still looks about right for the 68-year-old De Niro compared to Jason Statham, who didn't appear taller than 174 cm himself compared to Clive Owen at the same premiere. But that was definitely his max then as he could seem just 5'7.5" as he approached 70. As I said, I was by no means in position to guess precisely seeing him briefly with a hat and some distance, but if I had to put money on a precise figure then, I'd have guessed 5'6.75" at age 76. De Niro at 59 was just barely taller than 5'8" max Mark Wahlberg at the Tribeca premiere for the 2003 Italian Job. 174 cm then and this seems about right as I said at age 57 in Showtime with Eddie Murphy who definitely seems around 176 cm, but no taller for either. I don't suspect he had lost anything noticeable just yet, maybe a bit by 2003 when he turned 60. His height loss really became noticeable between 60-65 and again between 70-75. Maybe lost a small fraction between 55-60. To be fair, though, I'd just add that Bono is a guy whose footwear has to be known since I've even seen him in platform shoes that looked ridiculous as a middle-aged man.
Legend 177 cm said on 25/Nov/24
I don't think he was ever 5'9". 5'8.5" peak sounds way more realistic. In Cape Fear he looked pretty short and significantly below average. IMDB lists him at 5'9.5", he's probably that height when wearing shoes. He also looks the same height as Bono in the picture:
He looks 5'8" max compared to Mike Tyson in this picture:
5'8.75" is a fair listing. 5'8.5" seems more practical but 5'8.75" is also a possibility. No chance he was ever 5'9".
Rising174cm said on 25/Nov/24
You could maybe dismiss De Niro putting 5'11" on his early resume to get work but he was still claiming, in effect, to being 5'10"-5'11" just a few years ago when he said that his purportedly 6'4" character in The Irishman was only 5 to 6 inches taller! I saw De Niro around the time of The Joker. Granted, I was probably 10 feet away and he was wearing a hat, but if you asked me, my best guess would have been a weak 5'7" then. I think 5'8.5", 5'8.75" max was more likely. He was a bit shorter than 174-175 cm Stallone on the set of Cop Land when Stallone didn't appear to wear lifts and De Niro was no taller than an aging Tony Curtis. De Niro was also only 57 when he filmed Showtime with Eddie Murphy yet he could look 5'8.5" max in comparison, if not a full inch shorter. I think 174 cm range peak, 173-174 range age 55-60, 172 cm age 65. By 70, he was still looking about 5'7.5", but no more. Stallone hadn't lost much, if any height by 66-70, but even in dress shoes, he was then looking 1"-1.5" taller. However, 75-80 is when I think De Niro began to struggle to even look a full 5'7" at times. I think Matt Damon is more likely to be 5'9.5" max and possibly a fraction under rather than over.

@Mask: The Damon pic was more than a decade ago. De Niro was 5'7.5" until he was about 70 or so, but he's now 78 and I'm sure he's 5'7" at best now, if that. He did look an easy 5'9" in Mean Streets, but he wore thick heels in Taxi Driver and didn't look that tall in that film. If anything, he looked a bit shy of 5'9" or possibly 5'8.5" in The Last Tycoon filmed the same year. Rob use to mention that he heard rumors De Niro wore lifts in some films and it might have been linked to that shoemaker who made elevator shoes for Stallone, Michael Douglas, Chuck Norris, Burt Reynolds and others.

There are sometimes ranges when one argue narrower than wider, but for these 4 it's wider ranges of 2-3 cm often. I personally can't see any of them in that 174 range peak though. If i have to guess who was closer to a weak 175 range of them, then i guess Depp, but it's a really tough one honestly.

@Rob Who would you give the slight edge at peak between De Niro, Van Damme, Depp and Stallone and who could be the shortest? It is tricky to pick one of them as potentially the tallest. Sometimes I think Stallone has the chance of a tiny bit over 5ft 9

Shortwithdimples said on 28/Dec/21
Hi Rob. I recently watched The King Of Comedy and was wondering what you thought Robert De Neros height may have appeared to be in that film. I'm thinking 5'10 with shoes.
Rising174cm said on 27/Dec/21
Rob use to mention at the top of the page that he's read De Niro wore lifts in films so it's not that unlikely. Pasquale Di Fabrizio made elevator shoes for Burt Reynolds, Sly Stallone, Michael Douglas and others and I believe he also named De Niro as a customer. Chuck Norris also requested Di Fabrizio make elevator boots for him. I don't think De Niro wore lifts as regularly as those others did on and offscreen, but it's not hard to believe he did for roles other than the Irishman.
A couple of years ago, I'd have thought 5'6.5", maybe 5'7" at the absolute most. Though as I've said, he was walking, about 10 feet away and wearing a hat. I assumed some of that was probably posture and while he may not be below 5'7" when measured, I'm not certain he's still above it. At the very least, I think he's closer to 5'7" than 5'8" now.
Tall Sam said on 23/Dec/21
He appeared in a lot of roles, there’s no evidence or likelihood he was a lift wearer back in 70s on, in Frankenstein and The Irishman they use tricks to make him seem taller.
gaur said on 22/Dec/21
Rob, nowadays de Niro looks too short and also many people are claiming that in person he looks shorter could it be possible when young he wore lifts all the time and now due to joint pain in his early old age he stopped.
Because I rarely see him in thin sneakers.
Editor Rob
He might look sub 5ft 7 at times, but will he measure under it today? I'm not sure he's quite that short if measured, although could be soon.

Did some extra work on Killers of the Flower Moon back in June and July. Walked right past Deniro and DiCaprio more than once. DiCaprio is definitely around 5'11 and pretty wide shouldered and sturdy-looking in person. Huge head and long arms.
Deniro, no lie looked 5'5-5'6 and extremely small in frame and skinny. I'm 5'9 and if the internet alone were to be believed he should have looked much closer to my height. And his posture seemed fine, I just can see him ever being anything close to 5'8 or higher at any point. Lifts and angles must work wonders.

I agree, Harvey was never 5'8. He was noticeably shorter than 5'8.25 Buscemi. And he fid look about 1.5 inch shorter than de niro . De niro 5'9 Harvey keitel 5'7.5
Rising174cm said on 11/Dec/21
I don't buy Keitel at a full 5'8" peak. More 5'7.5". But in fairness to De Niro, he did look at least 1.5" taller in Mean Streets. That was actually the most solid 5'9" range he ever looked. Was he already wearing lifts on screen for that film? I honestly doubt it, but it's not impossible. Rob thought De Niro may have been wearing lifts when he did a play in 1986 based on how tall he looked with Ralph Macchio.
He did look a full 3" shorter than 5'11.5" Ray Liotta in Goodfellas and De Niro was only about 45 when they shot that film so I doubt he had lost much height. He was also only about 47 when he did Cape Fear and 6'0" Nick Nolte could make him look more 5'8" range than a full 5'9". Keep in mind that De Niro gained muscle and Nolte lost weight for that role so De Niro could appear more intimidating so it's likely Scorsese tried to minimize the height difference. He was already looking no taller than 5'8.5" at times in the 80s even offscreen. And as I've mentioned, he looked closer to 5'8n5", maybe 5'8.75" max in The Last Tycoon.
I can buy the 5'7.5" figure when he did Grudge Match, but he was clearly struggling with 5'8" flat by age 65 around the time Righteous Kill was released. He could have already been more 172 cm. You can see him with Tom Cruise around that time. He could have been anywhere between 5'7.5" and 5'7.75" by the time of the photo above with Matt Damon, whom I doubt is taller than 5'9.5". He was also looking perhaps 172 cm with 174 cm Jason Statham when they did The Killer Elite.
But by age 76, he really was just 5'7" flat and now at 78, he's definitely not stretching up to 5'7.5" for a measurement.
Okidoki said on 21/Nov/21
@Rob, isn't that barefoot picture where De Niro and Keitel are standing beside each other a really good picture to determine their heights? Do De Niro look 5'9 there to you? Many argue that Keitel was 5'7 and a half, which is the lowest i'd give him. He honestly looked at most around 172.5 cm in Mean Streets when watching the movie in my opinion.
Rising174cm said on 21/Nov/21
Stallone was never more than 174.5 to 175 cm, he just maintained that height until he was in his late 60s. But I do believe there was a better chance of Stallone scraping 5'9" flat than De Niro. Not just because of Stallone being a bit taller on the Cop Land set. As I've mentioned, De Niro really looked to be not quite 5'9" at times in The Last Tycoon. He was 174 cm max with 176 cm Murphy and I think Showtime was filmed before 2002 and delayed for a while.
As for his current height, I he looked like he walked around at 169-170 range a couple years back 10 feet away wearing a hat. I don't think that I can precisely judge from that, but he did seem like he was barely a 5'7" guy at 76. Hard to imagine him any taller.
Yet he was implying he's still 5'10"-5'11" for the Irishman! I'm guessing he'd claim only 5'10" since the press usually reported their heights as 5'10" and 6'4", which wouldn't be so bad at his peak, but he did say 5" or 6" shorter than a reportedly 6'4" guy. Then again, Michael Douglas is lucky if he's 5'7.5" these days and he's still claiming 5'10".

Look at the shirtless DeNiro for film Taxi. Look closely at the torso. He is a wiry little guy. How could anyone think this is a 5’8” solid build guy? A strong wind would blow him away. The average high school sophomore is better built them DeNiro was in Taxi. He is filmed every which way to make him look average height….but he is not. DeNiro is a little guy, I met him in the 70s, and I’ll say 5’5” back then, and that is stretching it. He is little guy. He obviously wore custom made petite clothes. Now, he is probably 5’3" at best. I am not a betting person, but I sure would bet on this…but you would never get the truth.
Taxi Driver: 10 Most Iconic Moments, Ranked | ScreenRant
How is it that Talia Shire is 5’3” and she towers over Robert DeNiro? Can people not see? It is mind-boggling that people can not see. Can anyone refute this? People who have worked on film sets with him say he is a little guy, short limbs, short torso. Believe them, they are telling the truth. This has got to be the biggest joke that DeNiro is average height...talk about mind control.

Online it says he is 5'10 but he seems 5'7 1/2 max so dont find that clam very accurate. however in his prime he still hit below 5'10 abut 5'8 3/4.

Looked a solid 5ft9 in his prime
Become a massive disappointment recently. Boring, predictable, watered down and phoned in performances. Last decent movie he did was Heat....The Irishman is an ok movie but only because of Pesci...DeNiro and Pacino were just recycling past roles...both need to pack it in

@Rob: Do you remember how Robert stacked up with Glenn at the time he posted here? I'm trying to map out his height loss over the years and it's such a blast going through some of the comments on this page from 05-07, where some people were saying after age 60 he must have shrunk near 2 inches already!
Personally I think he mostly passed for 175 cm in his prime, and had lost 1 cm or so by 60, then closer to 2 cm through late 60's. From early 70's until today another 2 cm lost on top of that looks likely. Near 175 cm peak, 171 today.
Editor Rob
He had a few photos, sometimes looked similar range, other times taller.
Rising174cm said on 25/Mar/21
@MaskDeMasque: He did easily look 5'9" in Mean Streets, but he struggled to look even a full 5'9" in The Last Tycoon. 5'8.75" would probably be the best guess for how tall De Niro looked in that film assuming Dana Andrews hadn't lost much height at 67. Btw, here's a fixed version I tried to post of De Niro with Curtis in his early to mid 60s:
Click Here Looks like around the time of Angel Heart based on De Niro's beard so Curtis would have been over 60 already.
Also, I wouldn't say he looked anything over 5'9" in Taxi Driver considering footwear. You can see he has a pretty thick-heeled boot in this still:
Click Here and in other scenes, you can see he wore these brown cowboy-type boots while 5'8" Cybill Shepherd wore a lower style heel so not a big difference in footwear:
Click Here It also depends on what one thinks of as De Niro's early films because certainly by the early 90s, you could find more where he can look not quite 5'9" and at times, more 5'8.5". Did he look a full 2" taller than 5'7" max Robin Williams in Awakenings?
Rapha said on 10/Mar/21
Hi Rob
He is listed at 177 cm online, do you think he was that tall during his peak out of bed ?
Editor Rob
yeah I think that is very likely he could have got that range earlier in the morning
MaskDeMasque said on 15/Feb/21
He looks every bit of 5'9 in his earlier films like mean streets.

Rising174cm said on 29/Jan/21
@Canson: He did look at least 5'9" in Mean Streets if Harvey Keitel was even 5'7.5", much less the 5'8" he's listed, but I have doubts. It depends on if you think he could have lost 2" by age 76 because I really don't think he was more than about 5'7" by then. Also more 174 cm at age 53 in Cop Land even if you believe Stallone was more 175 than 174. Then in Goodfellas, De Niro aged 45-46 could look 3" shorter than 5'11.5" Liotta. As mentioned, I thought he was similar to 5'8.75" listed Tony Curtis in The Last Tycoon and here they are when Curtis was in his 60s: tinyurl.com/yli14jv9 I remember De Niro looking 173-174 range with Eddie Murphy in Showtime, which was filmed sometime around the time De Niro was 57-58, iirc.
So yeah, I'm a bit iffy on the 5'9" peak. It's tough to see him less in Mean Streets, but otherwise, he could look 5'8.5"-5'8.75" and supposedly had DiFabrizio elevators for some roles. Him still implying he's 5'10" shows he's another older man who maintains their (inflated) peak claim.
Canson said on 26/Jan/21
@Rising: I still am iffy on the 5’9” peak height. But maybe he made it. I could see the weak 5’9 though
Canson said on 26/Jan/21

It's truly ridiculous that De Niro was still effectively claiming 5'10" in 2018:
"The guy was actually much taller than, not much, yeah he was about five, six inches taller than me. And so just to show the relation to any other of the actors or characters that I’m taller."
Given that Sheeran is widely reported to have been 6'4" that could even be interpreted as a 5'10"-5'11" claim, though most articles that mentioned the height difference reported De Niro as 5'10" and Sheeran as 6'4" so he's probably directly mentioned that figure in at least one interview for the film. It's not unusual for an older man to hold on to their peak claim, but a 5'7" man claiming 5'10" winds up ridiculous. The 5'10" claim would have been unremarkable at his peak, but even then, he was a good inch shorter than Dana Andrews in The Last Tycoon. Andrews was in his mid to late 60s and given a peak height of 5'10" here. In the same film, he was perhaps as tall, but not taller than 5'8.75" listed Tony Curtis.

At the very end of Cop Land, Stallone looked slightly taller to me when you see them walking right next to each other and I think you can see the difference in this pic on set:
Click Here I think Stallone was still his peak height of 174.5 to 175 cm at age 50 so De Niro was 174 cm max at age 53, imo. I'm 50/50 on whether De Niro had lost height by 1996 when Cop Land was filmed. However, I saw De Niro walking 10 feet away from me a little over a year ago and I would have said more 5'6.5" today than 5'7.5". Some of that may have been the distance and old man posture, but I have a hard time believing he's much taller than 5'7" these days.

I do appreciate Mr Rob impressive work to go around and find about everyone's height with a great accuracy and persistance. I'm often curious about people's height and I know that I can come here to check out confidently. I would, though, put the peak height forward instead of the current one. Just a question of pride I think: I have been 5foot 10 between 16 and about 40 then I've lost an inch for bad posture. From age 43 I've only been 5 foot 9 and though I'm still the same height now at 50 I feel miserable about having already lost an inch that soon.Take care.
Editor Rob
sometimes height loss can be recovered especially if it's noticed in late 40's and 50's. Some exercise routine and simple stretching for a few months might be something worth looking into, for actors too!
I added a quote the other day on
Charles Grodin's page, he did his own routine to improve his posture and Anthony Quinn was surprised when he met him and he looked taller!

@Jtm
The only reason Sly's height has received so much scrutiny is because of his tough guy action star image. He was 175-176 range, average height at best, but that can come across as quite short when you're presenting yourself as an action hero.
De Niro in comparison was never trying to project himself as taller and he almost always plays troubled/damaged characters or downright psychopaths. It is quite possible that he was a bit shorter than Sly but no one cared to point it out.
Tall Sam said on 29/Oct/20

There was something on the lines of Robert being a six-footer, albeit jokingly, and from the mouth of a 15-year-old kid, played by Juliette Lewis.
Robert bulked out like mad for the film, 'Cape Fear', and was covered in tattoos, so there were many distractions from his actual height, and when Juliette meets him, he is mainly sitting down, polluting the air with dope smoke, so for a youngster, that sort of mistake is easily made.
He'll have been at his peak back in the early 90s, and looked as strong as an ox.
It's an excellent film, directed by Martin Scorsese, who never lets his audience down.
I'm going for 5ft9.25 for Robert's peak and 5ft7.75 for his height today. I can't help but think of Robert and Al Pacino as living legends.

Please someone explain this. Martin Scorcese and Robert DeNiro sit side by side at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards and they are the same height! What is Martin Scorcese’s height?
I, unfortunately, do not know how to copy shots from a YT video, but perhaps others might come the picture in a YT video that I am referring to. It shows DeNiro wearing 3 ½ inch platform shoes. I assume that it was taken from the film, The Irishmen. This is a full body shot, DeNiro wears a short sleeve pullover and kaki pants, and it shows the bizarre difference in the length of leg from the crouch to the knee, and from the knee to the ankle...about three inch difference. Extremely weird looking. So not only are the shoes high platforms, which are comfortable to wear, but they have INSIDE LIFTS AS WELL! The photo also shows DeNiro’s short arms. Very, very, short arms. Bizarre. Weird as could be.

I have worked on several movie sets that Deniro starred in and have seen him stand next to Pacino and Pesci among others. This guy is 5'6" at best. Very short limbs and torso. Pant legs seem oddly long compared to stature which I'd consistent with elevated shoes. While he often acts the tough guy and recently can be heard making threats to punch out people like the president, one would have to punch down to hit Mr. Deniro as he is quite diminuitive. On par with Tom Cruise and Dusting Hoffman. Stallone (at 5'8") dwarfs this lightweight.

A few more shots of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro seated together. Who is taller? My guess is that they are both about the same height, maybe off by an inch or less.
However, standing, De Niro’s height increases quite a bit because he always wears high shoe lifts. Those shoes are hand made and extremely expensive. Two pairs of those shoes would buy me a new car. I have also read that people who met Pacino claimed he wore Cuban heel shoes. I never met Pacino, but I did meet De Niro, and I think they are very close in height, maybe off by an inch.

Benny,17/Nov/19, if you REALLY did meet Robert De Niro you would KNOW that he is a little man, who wears custom proportioned clothes for his extremely short frame and high shoe lifts, and even then, he still can’t pull off being of even average height.
I DID meet Robert De Niro in the 1970’s at a party given by Warren Beatty for his film, Reds, held at the Seville hotel in NYC. De Niro was pointed out to me, as I certainly did not recognize him. That’s when I realized the incredible skill of movie makers in their use of illusion and trickery. I would not have recognized De Niro if he had not been pointed out to me as he was such a diminutive guy. De Niro was talking with two men that were even shorter than him. I spoke to De Niro and at the time I was five foot two and looked him STRAIGHT IN THE EYE. He was short, very, very, short.
I DID meet De Niro and I speak the truth. Here’s some info. At the time, (the 1970s) Gulf and Western owned Paramount Studios. I had friends who worked for Paramount and they were invited to Warren Beatty’s party. My friends brought me along as their guest. That’s how I met De Niro.
Benny, you say that you met De Niro and he is five foot ten? So De Niro GAINED approximately 5 inches in height since I met him in the 70s. Simply incredible.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro sit side by side on straight back chairs and Pacino is clearly a good two inches taller than De Niro....check head, check shoulders; Pacino is taller than De Niro. And no, De Niro is not slouching. That this photo got pass PR and actually got publshed is hilarious and finally all the nonsense for years of De Niro being of average height is finally busted. No doubt when they both stand De Niro will be the tallest because of his incredibly built up shoes. What a joke. And Pacino is supposed to be 5’5”. What does that tell you. De Niro was ALWAYS extremely short. I give Pacino credit, he is what he is, a short guy and doesn’t try to fake it. For some reason producers must have really liked De Niro. They carried their art of illusion onto the real life of De Niro, pushing the false concept that De Niro was of average height, even to go so far as putting out false info about Cathy Moriarty, claiming she was 5’9” in the film Raging Bull. Moriarty was no where near 5’9” but that info was put out there because in Raging Bull, De Niro and Moriarty was the same height. And that false info stuck. Cathy Moriatry height is ACTUALLY 5 foot six inches. All the PR claiming she is 5’9” is linked to her role in Raging Bull to convince people that De Niro was 5’ 9”. Sick of the lies.

Online there are photos of Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro standing side by side. (PR for the film, Wag the Dog) De Niro appears to be about three to four inches taller than Hoffmann. But, LOL, if you look carefully from where the crotch and knee area breaks is exactly the same on BOTH of them, BUT, De Niro’s lower leg from the knee to ankle is much longer than Hoffman’s. Not only that, the distance from his thighs to knees is quite a bit shorter than the distance from his knee to ankle....and that is NOT normal. High lifts, extremely high lifts. Wow. Guess that’s why he is slouched over so much,,,not easy walking in such high heels...As a woman I can’t do it anymore,,,too painful. Poor De Niro. I guess that is why in the film, The Irishman, De Niro wears platform shoes as they are comfortable, you are not walking on your toes.
Also, I checked photos of De Niro and Anne Heche. In most photos De Niro is quite a bit taller than Heche who is supposed to be 5' 5". He appears to be about 4 inches taller. But in one photo (from the film) they are the same height (both wearing flat shoes.) When in sitting position side by side they are the same height. None of the shots are consistent. Most of the time he is taller, and sometimes the same height.
I met him in the 70s. I took him to be 5’ 6”. Now I am not so sure. I think much shorter. I was 5’ 2” wearing about two and half inch heels. I looked him straight in the eye. He was short, extremely short. No way near average. Stop looking at height when comparing him to others. Check where the pants knee area breaks. From the knee down is where he picks up height from his super high heels. Oh, the pain wearing those shoes.
Annettemarie said on 23/Oct/19
I just this minute read a post by Robert De Niro's former bodyguard that said De Niro is about 5' 6" at the very most. Get that---at the very most. Now that is accurate. He didn't say when he was De Niro's bodyguard, only former. When I met De Niro in the 70s I took him to be 5' 6", and 5' 7" was stretching it big time, maybe with his lifts. That was in the 70s and he was clearly a small man. All this nonsense about De Niro was / is 5' 8" or 5' 9" is totally hilarious, he wasn't even 5' 7" without his lifts. Glad I saw the bodyguard post, finally someone says it like it is. Probably, De Niro, now with age, is more like 5' 5" / 5' 4". He wears lifts inside his shoes and stacked heels to boot. Notice how his pant legs are always so long, to cover the stacked heel. It's show business folks, it's all fake. Sorry to break it to you all, but De Niro is a little man.
There is a photo online of Robert De Niro and Al Paccino sitting next to each other and in the sitting position Paccino is a good two inches taller than De Niro, (that was really odd) but when they stand, De Niro is taller than Paccino. Wow, those lifts must really add quite a bit of height. Poster Richard Fisher is absolutely correct, De Niro is a little guy.

Having unexpectedly seen De Niro a few weeks ago, I don't think he is over 5'7" anymore. He was at the same venue an engagement party was held for my friend with a young boy I assume is his son and a woman I assumed was his nanny or assistant, though the best idea I got of his standing height was when he was walking maybe 10 feet from me and he was wearing a hat. People can appear shorter than they are from that distance, especially while walking, but I'd have thought De Niro was maybe a 5'7" guy who could walk around looking maybe 5'6.5". I can't rule out this listing standing for a measurement having not spoken to De Niro nor stood next to him, but if I didn't have any previous perception of his height, I probably would have just broadly said he was a 5'6"-5'7" range guy since I wasn't in position to be more precise than that.
As for the recent appearance with Phoenix, he can look at least an inch shorter, sometimes more:
Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Click Here Arguably more like 1.5" those last 3 photos so all things being equal, I'd have said De Niro looks a weak to flat 5'7" with Phoenix, but all things aren't equal since Phoenix clearly has bigger heels, but De Niro tends to be a bit closer to the camera in most pics. Oddly, this photo with De Niro seemingly trying to
Bust a Gut:
Click Here don't even look like a full inch difference, though these are generally exceptions.
Though I'm guessing him 5'7", I think a 5'7.25" current height would be safe considering Rob's conservative approach to changing listings, though I like that some current heights have been updated more frequently lately like Arnold, Seagal and Malcolm McDowell.

Truthsayer said on 1/Oct/19
It's not rocket science. Clearly in the recent pic showing him hardly taller than Pacino now (there must be some lifts in Pacino's shoes or De Niro is under 5ft7 now), De Niro was most probably using lifts throughout his earlier movie career. He was almost the perfect height for lift-wearing too - if he was 173.5cm he would get close to 180cm easily (6cm gain can be achieved in almost any shoe).
Rising174cm said on 12/Sep/19
I can't see much chance of De Niro being taller than Stallone. Both likely peaked at a weak to flat 5'9", imo and were basically in the 174 cm minimum and 175 cm max range, but considering a 50 year old Stallone looked to edge out a 53 year old De Niro in Cop Land based on the ending scene and this on set photo:
Click Here and more convincingly, 67 year old Sly looked about 1.5" taller than 70 year old De Niro by the time Grudge Match premiered:
Click Here I have an easier time buying De Niro had lost 1 cm by Cop Land(though I don't know of any real evidence suggesting he had) than believing De Niro had lost close to, if not 2" by Grudge Match. As far as I can tell, De Niro probably started shrinking noticeably around his mid to late 50s, but more noticeably after 60 while Sly didn't seem to clearly lose much, if any height until his late 60s or mid 60s at the earliest and to this day only looks to have lost 1 cm to 2 cm max while De Niro has probably lost at least 4, maybe even 5 cm by this point. I'd guess he was at least 5'7.5" when Grudge Match came out with a chance he might have still measured 172 cm, but nowadays, I'm not sure when the last time he looked over 171 cm and he's probably getting close to the point where he's not much over, if anything over 5'7", if he's not there already! Sly on the other hand still looks 174 cm or at the very least a solid 5'8".

I saw Robert last night in 'Taxi Driver', and apart from looking incredibly young (he was 32 I think), he didn't look very tall in comparison to the many guys walking about on the busy streets. I enjoyed it more this time round than I did as a youngster, because I could understand why he was hailed a hero.
Robert is one of those many men who became more attractive with age.
Even though he was playing Lucifer in the film 'Angel Heart', from 1987, I think he looked ridiculously attractive! It wasn't the long fingernails at the end (yuck - creepy!), I put it down to my liking for long-haired fellas, and that dates right back to my teens! 😁

There is just too much evidence from Woods only looking tops 2 inches taller in Once Upon a Time in America and Woods was 5'11" when he was younger, to him looking taller than Moriarty and having 6 inches on Pesci to think he wasn't at least 5'9" when he was young. He clearly has shrunk a lot.
A M said on 10/Dec/18
Anne Heche is 5’5”. She costarred with Robert DeNiro in Wag the Dog. Both wearing flat shoes, Heche actually appears taller than DeNiro. Check online for yourself.
Then we have Cathy Moriarty. Except for one website giving Moriarty height as 5’6”, all other websites claim that she is 5’9” which is ridicules. Interestingly, and just a coincidence of course , the website that stated Moriarty height as 5’6” has been taken down. All the websites giving Cathy Moriarty height as 5’9” also state her rise to stardom is due to her role in Raging Bull. By making Moriaty taller than she actually is, would confirm that DeNiro is taller than he really is....that’s show biz. There is no way Moriarty is 5’9” and here’s why.
Cathy Moriarty co-starred with Peter Firth in the film, Burndown. Peter Firth is 5’9” and Cathy Moriarty, wearing heels, (probably 3” heels) is the same height as Firth. So how can Moriarty be 5’9”? She is not, it is just baloney to propagate that little DeNiro is much taller than he really is. He is a little man. I know, I spoke with him, eye to eye, and I was 5’2” wearing 2 ½” heels, and he was a small man...I mean small. He was wearing a camel colored leather jacket that was obviously custom made as the jacket was petite, short, in proportion to his short frame. It was at a party given by Warren Beatty for his film, Reds. DeNiro was talking to two other men, both extremely short men. As a petite young woman myself, I had never dated a man as small as DeNiro. I just don’t get how he has been chosen to star in big films...what a joke...It is all ILLUSION. I can only surmise that Martin Scorses, who is a very short man himself, is probably comfortably around the short DeNiro. Someone at least 5’11” should have played Jake LaMotta, but maybe Scorses, at 5’3”,would not be comfortably looking up to a man of 5’11”.
In the bedroom scene of Raging Bull, DeNiro and Moriarty are both barefoot, and are the same height. Again in the bathing suit scene, they both are barefoot and appear to be the same height.
It is absolutely baloney that Cathy Moriarty is 5’9”; in heels that would make her six foot. One bed scene in Raging Bull, DeNiro is wearing stacked heel shoes,...and most likely inside lifts as well.
Not to forget Anne Heche is 5’5” and she and DeNiro appear to be the same height in the film, Wag the Dog, both are wearing flat shoes. So which is it, is DeNiro 5’5” or 5’6” without his lifts and high heels? DeNiro at 5’7” is pushing it big time...it is a joke. Maybe he is with his lifts. Look for yourself and keep your eyes open, the
camera deliberately creates illusion, but if you are sharp you won’t be fooled. It is stated in DeNiro’s bio that he is 5’10”. Who can believe such absolute nonsense?
Rising - 174 cm said on 21/Oct/18
@Junior: I tend to agree, except that means Harvey Keitel was not even 171 peak and more like 5'7" flat because De Niro had a minimum 1.5" on him in Mean Streets without any footwear advantage as far as I could tell and I have doubts De Niro was already wearing lifts. Funny enough, his character claimed 5'11" in Bang the Drum Slowly, though I'd say he pulled off at least 5'9" with Michael Moriarity in that film as well keeping in my the camera may have minimized the difference.
Junior Hernandez 1990 said on 19/Oct/18

As far as how tall he is when he's not borrowing Kane Hodder's shoes, he's still not under 5'7", but not much taller either. Here's some good video from 2016 of De Niro and Roberto Duran, whom Rob met and estimated 5'6.5" these days:
Click Here There's a minute there or a bit more to compare. Photos can be more problematic as neither consistently stands straight. Shutterstock has a few good pics of the premiere, but I'll just post De Niro earlier with 5'8" Usher:
Click Here I think Usher would have at least 1 cm on De Niro even if he weren't closer to the camera. Rob's listing isn't impossible depending on how much De Niro would correct his posture for a measurement, but I'd guess more 170-171.
Rising - 174 cm said on 7/Sep/18
Yeah, those remind me of when Humphrey Bogart had the blocks taped to shoes. Here's De Niro talking about the platforms:
Click Here Interesting how he changes his mind about whether his character Frank Sheeran was actually "much taller" than he is. He winds up saying Sheeran was 5-6 inches taller so I guess De Niro would still claim at least 5'10".
At least De Niro has more traditional elevators for other scenes:
Click Here Click Here Even though Pacino is on higher ground, I still wonder what the difference is between those two nowadays.
And thick elevator boots, but not the Frankenstein platforms:

175 is reasonable, but maximum rather than minimum. He wasn't any taller than Tony Curtis(listed 5'8.75" here), not much taller than 5'8" Sean Penn, about 3" shorter than 5'11.5" Ray Liotta and more than 3" shorter than 6'0" Nick Nolte. I think more of a 174-175 range guy rather than 175-176, especially since he often looks 169-170 range today making it likely he's only 170-171 cm at 74.

I met De Niro in the late 70’s. Would that be considered his “prime?” It was at a party given by Warren Beatty for his film Reds, and I attended because I had a friend in the film industry. When someone pointed out De Niro to me I was really surprised. I didn’t recognize him. In person he is a very small man. I am petite myself, so it is not that I am tall and looked down at him. No, when we had a few words, we looked eye to eye. His height, at the very most, was 5’ 7”, and that’s stretching it. I would go further and say he was 5’ 6”. He is really short. The first thought that came to my mind was, how the heck did this guy ever get the opportunity to star in major films, he is so small? De Niro was obviously wearing custom made clothes, a short leather jacket for his short body. Off the rack men’s regular clothes would dwarf / overpower him.
Warren Beatty was at the same party and he was over 6’ tall.
People’s true appearance cannot be judged by films or even photos. Films are about creating illusions. It is not difficult to make a small man appear tall, or taller. Use co-stars who are the same height as the star, while the ‘star’ wears shoe lifts; built up heels as well as inside lifts that could easily add three to four inches. Custom made clothes in proportion to the body such as shorter jackets to make the legs appear longer thus give a taller appearance, wear extremely long pant legs to hid shoe heel or wear boots, etc. Camera angles are extremely important in creating all kinds of illusions.
Press releases / Public relations articles are basically fiction. I had more than one friend connected to the entertainment / film industry and the behind the scenes stories I have been told are nothing like what the public is told. It is all illusion, all fake.
Bottom line: In the 70’s De Niro was at the most, 5’ 7”, if that, and he was probably closer to 5’ 6”. Believe what you wish, I am a petite woman, 5’ 2”, and wearing heels, I looked at him eye to eye. He is short, no where near average height. Notice how long De Niro’s pant legs are. Why are they so long? To hide his heels.
Just as De Niro portrays himself as of Italian heritage, he portrays himself of average height. He is neither. There is nothing wrong or inferior about being of short stature, so why the false claims of 5’ 9” or 10” or 11”, which is not only ridiculous, it is just plain dishonest and I can’t stand lies....but as they say, that’s show biz. It is all illusion; nothing is as it seems. For people who are convinced De Niro is, or ever was, 5’ 8” or taller, I give all the credit to Hollywood’s use of trickery and illusion that so easily fools the eye. That's show biz.

I agree with weaker 5'9". There are some scenes in We're No Angels where he doesn't even look taller than Sean Penn, though he does have him by a solid inch at other times. Not that tall with 5'4" Liza Minnelli in New York, New York either as she wore heels, but De Niro had good sized heels on his own shoes (perhaps his DiFabrizios?)
However, he's clearly closer to 5'7" than 5'8" nowadays. I think the 5'7.5" would have been accurate a few years back when he turned 70, but now he's definitely looking like taking another fraction off would be more accurate.

Another thing I’ve realized is a strong 5’8 is gonna be perceived as 5’9 or 5’8.5 to others just due to rounding and inflation etc

Certainly, a 71 year old De Niro was looking at least an inch shorter than 5'8" max
Zac Efron:

Here is a 69 year old De Niro 2 years earlier looking 3" taller than Kevin Connolly, who is listed 5'5" here:

Even if Connolly is a half inch shorter than listed or De Niro is favored slightly, it looks to me like De Niro lost more height and became more hunched in just those 2 short years. I wouldn't guess him less than 5'7.5" at 69-70 in 2013, but he pretty consistently looks shorter than that the past couple of years. I can't rule out a flat 5'7" these days, but I'm not willing to say he's below that yet since he doesn't seem to stand at his full height. Looked about 5'7" or so with Obama within the last year, imo. What's really amazing is Burt Reynolds isn't much taller than De Niro this year:
Click Here And that's with 2" heeled boots, which knowing Burt, probably have a lift inside. He was looking shorter than De Niro when he hunched more. Just compare that to how the two would have looked in their prime.

He was never taller than 5'9" flat and very possibly under. I could believe 5'7.5" a few years back when he turned 70, but he's looking much more 5'7"-5'7.25" to me nowadays.
He can honestly pass for 5'6"-5'6.5" today. His posture is severely compromised these days at 74 years old. He for sure is not over a flat 5'7" today.

5'7.5" currently.

I did forget to say that while De Niro and Nicholson seemed similar in height, I don't remember a scene as good to compare exact height as De Niro with Andrews or even De Niro with Curtis.
Rising - 174 cm said on 12/Aug/17
I would agree weak 5'9" is more likely than a strong 5'8". I've never said any less than 5'8.5" peak for De Niro and if Keitel was around 5'7.5", I'd agree De Niro looked a full 5'9" in Mean Streets.
MaskDeMasque said on 10/Aug/17
In Mean Streets, he looks every bit of 5'9.
Mister lennon said on 9/Aug/17
Yes. But in the same film, he looked the same heigth than legit 5'9 jack nicholson. So, i think that a weak 5'9 is more possible than a strong 5'8.
Rising - 174 cm said on 7/Aug/17
Possibly. Maybe he was 5'8.75" like Rob lists Tony Curtis because the two of them could look very close in the Last Tycoon, but Curtis was slouching at times. But in that same film there are wide shots of De Niro and Dana Andrews who is listed 5'10" here, yet Andrews in his late 60s had at least an inch on De Niro. 5'8.5" is as possible as 5'9", imo. I can't see 176 for De Niro regardless.
Mister lennon said on 7/Aug/17
Peak deniro looked every bit of a 5'9 guy. Maybe a weak one, but 5'9.
Rising - 174 cm said on 5/Aug/17
Looking 5'9" in a movie doesn't make someone 5'9". A 5'8.5" man will also tower over Pesci who is no more than 5'3". As for Moriarty, I couldn't find a page here for her so who knows how tall she is? Besides, it's standard practice to ensure a leading man is taller than his leading lady and in this can be accomplished in a number of ways. If De Niro was at least 5'9" then why does he look shorter here in his early 40s than Tony Curtis in his early 60s?
Click Here Rob lists Curtis at 5'8.75" peak, which sounds about right. 5'9" is definitely the most De Niro could have been. He may have looked 176 cm at times, likely due to lifts or his build, but that would mean he's lost a full 2 inches since he's not looking more than 171 cm or so these days. Ray Liotta had a good 3" on him in Goodfellas and Rob lists Liotta at 5'11.5".
Spencer said on 4/Aug/17
If he wasn't 5'9 how come he towers over Pesci in Raging Bull and looks an inch taller than Cathy Moriarty? He's lost quite a bit of height. He def looked 5'9 5'9.25 in the 70s.
Rising - 174 cm said on 1/Aug/17
@Canson: I agree with you, nowhere near 5'10", I was just saying that's what he was listed at in the 90s and earlier so that's what I thought he'd claim. Personally, I think it's fairly doubtful he was even a full 5'9". An aged Tony Curtis looked taller than De Niro in the late 80s. Sharon Stone admitted she was only 5'8.5", but claimed 5'9" when she "felt tall." Rob lists her at 5'8" flat. She was a bit shorter than Sly Stallone, but not a lot shorter and if you see her off screen with Michael Douglas, she was barely shorter than him, even though they gave him huge elevator boots for Basic Instinct that made him several inches taller. De Niro was also pretty similar to 5'8" Cybil Shepherd in Taxi Driver.
I'd say 174 cm peak and 171 current are likely for De Niro.

Been coming to this site for years. I think De Niro's height is the most disputed on this site.
Montana said on 1/Aug/17
@Rob: Oh I see. Yeah he might be slouching
It's just that he is listed at 5'7 while my dad claims him to be really tall, when he barely looks taller than 5'7 or 5'8 de Niro. lol
Montana said on 1/Aug/17
Rob: always possible the taller guy dropped a lot more height than is evident in the photo.
But that guy is like 41 and he is in pretty good shape. So do you think he is above 5'10 or taller?
Editor Rob
I mean, he dropped height in terms of slouching or bending his knees...but I don't know the guy, so it's just one possible explanation.
Montana said on 31/Jul/17
Hey @Rob, could you please look at this pic and tell me what the guy's height next to De Niro might be? I am confused because he is listed at 5'7 but people from my family know him and say he is tall

Rob could you do me a favour and set your oppinion on this pic? It's De Niro with an italian/albanian star dancer. What height would you think this guy's height is next to De Niro's? I am asking because he is listed at 5'7 but my dad knows this guy and he says he is over 6ft tall while he looks similar to De Niro's height

@Rising; I never got a 5'10 impression with him. But in Casino he looks shorter than Stone at times and the same at others. She's listed 5'9" but could be less. Deniro never struck me as being that tall imho.
Sandy Cowell said on 27/Jul/17
@ Canson - I take it then that I deciphered correctly? 😋
Re: LMFAO. Thank you! 👍
RichardSpain said on 27/Jul/17
He seemed tall in movies like "Taxi Driver" but he was between 175-176 cm young.
171-172 cm nowadays.
De Niro had good look because he always was thin great advantage.
so if you have a normal height but you want to be a tall man is important be thin.
Rising - 174 cm said on 26/Jul/17
I wouldn't say for sure or never. I think it's an open question whether he was only 5'8.5" or the full 5'9". No doubt he could look 5'9" at times, but some of those times could have been the occasions he wore lifts. Seeing De Niro now looking closer to 5'7" than 5'8" has made me think he may have peaked at just 5'8.5". I think 171 cm is probable if he stands straight, but his posture can make him look weak 5'7" range. I believe he was 5'7.5" when he turned 70, but I think it's pushing it now at 73.
Spencer said on 26/Jul/17
He was for sure 5'9" in the 70s . He had at least 6 inches on Pesci in Raging Bull . Nowadays a strong 5'7.

Rising - 174 cm said on 18/Jul/17
@Canson: I think De Niro probably claimed 5'10", at least that's what he usually was listed and described at pre-internet. He was obviously never anywhere that tall and maybe not even 5'9". Wouldn't surprise me if De Niro was the type where his height never really came up in an interview. He usually didn't get into personal details too much or even go on too many talk shows relative to other stars of his stature. He did apparently wear lifts, though:
"The shoe guru built up other stars. (Hidden lifts are inside the footwear, which appear to have a normal heel.) The artificially boosted include Robert De Niro (who also "has a problem with the heel"), Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito and Dolly Parton ("I make her 21/2 inches taller. I also made her 400 pairs of shoes")."
I'm not sure De Niro was ever the type to wear elevator shoes outside of movies, but as a relatively short leading man, it makes sense. I mean, would anybody really be surprised to find out he had a little extra lift inside his Taxi Driver boots?
Click Here I did wonder in the past if he wore lifts for some of his 90s films like Heat and Casino, but I'd actually think it may have been something more likely in the 70s when his star was still on the rise. These days, he could be as short as 5'7" flat and I'm pretty certain he's now closer to 5'7" than 5'8".

@ Canson - Hi again! Now I would be very grateful if you could help me as regards the 'LMFAO' acronym! 😎
Firstly, am I correct in assuming that 'L' stands for 'Laugh'? Good! I thought so!
Is the 'M' short for 'my'? Excellent!
Does the 'F', or should I say, "Hey that's the actual 'F' word itself, correct? Good!"
The 'A' can be spelt two different ways, depending on which side of the Atlantic you reside, yes? I thought as much!
Then finally, the 'O' is short for 'off'!
I feel so much better now, - if I am correct, that is, or I won't allow myself a hot chocolate drink tonight, and then I'll go to bed in tears! 😭
Cheers! Enjoy your weekend Canson! 😁

@Sandy: hmm. I can see a 5'9" claim that could mean him being that in shoes which I see peak if he were 5'8" or him being a morning 5'9 (out of bed) and 5'8.25 at night and having an early appointment. I doubt he was ever more than 5'8" barefoot maybe a hair under

Robert de Nero is one of my all-time favourites and it doesn't matter a jot how tall he was at his peak or how tall he is now. He can scare the pants off me regardless! Look back to 'Cape Fear' and the 'Godfather II'. Neato!
I give him 5ft9, peak, and 5ft7 now!
Editor Rob
steady on Sandy, if nobody cared about height I'd be out of a job 😅
but it is true - even though this site is documenting and allowing discussion about famous people's stature, height isn't a competition. People come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and so do famous people...
and height can throw up some surprises, I remember a few years ago
Arnie was in a state of shock when he shook Tom's hand...the realisation if he lives another 20 years he'll be Tom Cruise height range, when he once was a man who was comfortably taller than
a 6ft President
RisingForce said on 12/Jul/17
De Niro may be 171 cm tops now and a flat 5'7" wouldn't surprise me, but his posture makes it difficult to tell. I'd buy the full 5'7.5" when De Niro was 70, but now at 73, he may have lost a bit more as he was already struggling with 5'8" and likely more 172 by his early to mid 60s. I do believe he was at least 5'8.5" peak maybe 5'9". But Rob used to mention at the top of this page that there were rumors De Niro had worn lifts and I do recall his name came up among DiFabrizio clients, though I don't remember if it was actually ever said he purchased elevators from DiFabrizio or just custom shoes.
@Shredder: Yeah, I mean no offense to Danimal, but I really don't his fixation on that one survey of 2000 people from 40 years ago or conflation of average with rule.

lol the funniest part is I never said anything about his current height I had that as his peak (max 5'8, or 5'7 and change). This guy was never 5'9" imho. I can see him with Samuel L Jackson in jackie Brown and he was nowhere near and that was in the 90s as well as Casino he looked short even with Sharon Stone
