Yes indeed, looks about an inch shorter than 6'4" Eli Manning, good catch. Seems the NFL height listings seem to be pretty accurate from what I've seen. If you were to start a page for Phelps the most decorated Olympian in history then I'd go with 6'3".
Shaun said on 25/Aug/12
I think Rob's right, its very difficult to buy anything over 6'3" next to Kobe and Deron. If he is 6'3" tops though a lot of the other swimmers need a downgrade by an inch. Height is tough to call sometimes as in some pics people who are supposed to be the same height look taller depending on angle or footwear/posture and it can baffle you at times. Phelps can look 6'4" but he looks barely 6'3" in those basketball comparison pics.

Its strange Rob as Phelps does have about 2 inches on 6'2" listed Ryan Loche. I've seen a photograph of Prince Harry and Ryan Loche standing barefoot inside a pool and they looked the exact same height, although one cannot rule out slope or one on toes or something but the photograph it looked like one of those side pools which don't slope and are used for parties and chit-chat and stuff. Prince Harry is what, 6'1.5"-6'2"? I saw a pic of him and Kate Middleton recently and thought he looked 6'2". Odd as I thought 6'3.5" seemed spot on for Phelps but Kobe owns him.
Shaun said on 24/Aug/12
Yeah, that can be a problem! Kobe has apparently been measured barefoot at 6'4.75" and I quite believe it as he passes for 6'6". Guys like him, Michael Jordan, Tim Robbins etc who are 195cm all generally look 6'6" which they actually are in footwear. I believe though Kobe is wearing sandals and Phelps barefoot though, if you google Phelps Kobe there should be one where you can see it. But they don't give him much advantage.

Scottie, once again if Kobe was 6'6 barefoot he would be listed by the NBA as about 6'8. Look at all the pics I gave, Kobe is absolutely not 2 inches taller than Wade or Jordan. He and his wife have both even admitted on numerous occations that without shoes his measurment was 6'4.75- 6'5.25 in the morning is the tallest he will be barefoot. I showed you several pics that factually prove that Kobe is at best 1 inch taller then Wade.

Derek, if you look at the Olympic photograph(the one where they are all lined up from tallest to shortest) you will see Kobe is at least 2 inches taller than Wade and even taller than the 6-4.75 Michael Redd. In the other photo, where they look almost identical in height, the angle is strange, and the picture is from the waist up. It seems that all the people on this thread who claim Kobe is 6-4.75 are only using pictures to substantiate their claims. I have seen him several times in person at UC-Irvine...I'm about 6-5 in shoes myself and he was 2 inches taller than me. A Staples Center security guard, who is also quite tall (6-4.5 barefoot), also commented earlier on this thread that Kobe is 6-6.
Clay said on 4/Jun/09
Scottie, Kobe is 6'4.75 without shoes. I don't know why you refuse to accept this. Kobe was obviously not joking when he said his height because has said it many times and was measured at it for the olympics. If Kobe was 6'6 barefoot he would be listed at 6'7 or 6'8 by the NBA. Look at him next to Wade, he is not 2 inches taller at all, barely 1 inch. Also look at him next to Jordan who is also 6'4.75 without shoes, they are almsot identical in terms of height when they are wearing similar footwear.

None of the pictures below are a great indication as they're usually photoshopped, different footwear, odd angles, and one person is closer to the camera than the other.
Also, one thing to note is that Kobe has a serious hunch. He's notoriously famous for this, so that's one thing to take into account.
Cheers.

NBA regulation basketball shoes add about 1 inch and half to height because of their thick soles(meant to cushion their feet when they land after a jump).

Big King why would you want to be 6'7"?? 6'6" is outrageously tall in itself and anything above that things really start to get awkward in public. If you are a legit 6'6" you will be head and shoulders above most of the world population, I can't understand why anybody at 6'6" would even consider that they could be taller as they stand 9 inches above average height unless they are in the NBA, the worlds tallest guys where 6'6" is pretty average.

JMD11185, Braynt was never listed 6'8. When he came into the league he was listed 6'7 which is basically his height in shoes rounded to the nearest higher inch. It was later changed to 6'6 and that's what it still is today. Barefoot Kobe is a just a tad under 6'5 but in shoes he is a bit over 6'6.

Shaq once was listed at 7'1 as a magic then at 7'2 in LA only to end up at 7'0 in phoenix. Now Kobe is listed at 6'6? Are you kidding. I remember watching Kobe in his first 4 seasons and everytime someone would compare him to Michael Jordan the one thing that someone would always say Kobe had over Michael is height so I don't know where all this is coming from. They list him at 6'6 so he can be more like Michael. Just like hes number 24 cause what comes after 23? Bingo

I would scan a picture and post it on here but we didn't have a chance to take one. Just got autographs. I don't know what else to say...

Michael Jordan is a tall man, but for a basketball player in the NBA he looked average among giants. Taller than some, shorter than some, but he stood up there. He's the GOAT man, no matter what. And his figure made him look pretty tall. He's maybe I think 6-5 or close to it without shoes on so with shoes on yeah 6-6 is about right. I think he's just a lil shorter than Kobe and a tad bit taller than DWade. Theyre all in that 6-4 thru that 6-5 area or close to it.

Shaq: why should he have lost height?? The man was the greatest athlete ever and is born in 1963. That makes him 45 years old.Thats mid life. I stated this numerous times. A healthy human being is not likely to lose height before his late 50ies and early 60ies. I say mid 60ies-thats where losing height comes into play for many men. And when you are healthy and in good shape by that age I say it's not more than 0.5 -0.75 inches. In your 70ies or 80 ies...hell yeah. Then you lose INCHES...

Heights are strange. It depends on the height of the person measuring you...the tape measurer itself...the type of shoes you're wearing? Since the age of 22, I've been measured from 6-0 1/2 to 6-4. From the Army to my doctor's office, to measuring at home, they're all different measurements. I'm a legit 6-3 1/4 barefooted and in dress shoes I'm exactly 6-3 3/4. I've stood next to pro ball players over the years and I can tell you...the guys in that 6-3 to 6-5 range are the same height. Those 6-8 and up to 6-10 are often legit. From 6-10 to 7-0 are exaggerated. Those 7-1 and up are pretty accurate, but if you're over 7-1 it doesn't matter if they list you at 7-3...its all the same. Pros I've been around...
John Starks - Listed 6-5, I'm taller, he's 6-3 maybe (in shoes)
Charles Oakley - Listed 6-9, pretty close...6-8(played against him in college)
Anthony Bonner - Listed 6-8,...6-7 1/4
Julius Erving - Listed @6-6 and 6-7, is 6-7
AI - Listed 6-0, definite 5-11
Majic Johnson - Listed 6-9, saw him up close...6-7 1/2
As for Jordan, my brother met him in the mid '90's. He said he had some "meaty hands" and was taller than him (he is 6-2 1/2) by a couple of inches. So on his best day, in his best dress shoes...he is 6-5, no taller. That makes him about 6-4 1/2 barefooted.

If you listed him at 6-4 3/4 based on a fans word that that's what the Olympics listed him then why didn't you take the fans word who said the NBA measured him at 6-4 7/8?
You said on the Kareem Abdul Jabbar page that you are always aiming for the most exact fraction and 6-4 7/8 would be as exact as you can get.
By the way the poster who said he was listed 6-4 3/4 at the Olympics is wrong. They listed him at 6-4 and I have the links to prove it.
Click Here Click HereHowever as you can see the Olympics just knocked 2 inches off every players NBA listed height so what are the odds every NBA player on that team was exactly 2 inches below their listed height?
So as a result as of right now 6 foot 4 7/8 seems like the most accurate listing.

same goes with other no-neck players like amare stoudimere, shawn marion, and elton brand. their short necks (and possibly longer than average wingspans too) make them play an inch or two taller than their listed height because their shoulders at attached at the same level as somebody who's an inch or two taller. a long neck is more like wasted or useless height imo, then again, you could have slightly better vision with a longer neck (but that obviously isn't going to help you much). Dwight Howard's got a short neck and small head so he his shoulders are about as high as somebody who's maybe 6,11" or even 7,0" even though he's only 6,9-6,10".

Yeah, Dwight plays center while Chris plays PF. Chris is actually now a legit 6'11" while Dwight is 6'9.5". Both of them have grown a little since entering the league as teenagers.

Thats why Dwight Howard can play as he does (beast in the paint). His long arms make him play like a real 7 footer. Hi's 6'9 - 6'10 with a wingspan about 7'5 now (pre draft say 7'4.5).
There's a picture with Bosh and Dwight standing next to each other. Bosh is at this time 6'10.25, and Dwight about 6'9, but their shoulder height is the same. Pre draft measurements say: 9'1
Standing Reach for Bosh at 6'10.25, 9'3.5 for Dwight at 6'9.
Bosh has what i call a "Weak height" because of his long neck.
You don't use your neck in basketball, don't You...?

unfortunately, i've got a very big/tall head (although my neck isn't particularly long) and even though i've got a good wingspan and not so broad shoulders (6,0") at only 5,9 1/2" barefoot my
Standing Reach isn't as high as expected because my big head makes my about an inch taller than i should be. btw, my head looks like it's about the same size as many NBA players (when compared to the basketball) even though i am at least half a foot shorter than them lol.
