That picture confirms Shaq's been wearing some ridculously thick-soiled, height-boosting sneakers (for whatever reason). This fact alone makes one question Shaq's height of 7'1".
I could argue 6'11"-odd for Gasol. MARC Gasol! Pau, for that reason, is a legit 7-footer (a 214-215 cm guy), has always looked every inch of it and withstood any comparison. In that picture he is just standing further away compared to Shaq so the perspective is not doing him any justice in regard of height. And again, take a look at the footwear the both men are wearing, there is a big difference there.
I don't think Pau has ever looked a legit 7'.

Wars is correct. Shaq has unnaturally thick basketball shoes. He's a huge man, but 611.5" barefoot is right on target. All his fans want to make him some sort of superhero. I believe Wilt Chamberlain had at least an inch on Oneal, maybe more. Also he was about the same height as Big Show, who seems to have lost lots of height. Oneal was measured his last year at LSU as 6'11.5". I just don't beleive he grew any after that.

Clay: I think he's something like 6'11 and 7/8 (not 6'11.5") barefoot, which is how I interpretate his admission to Stern of being "just under" 7 feet. Effectively, therefore, I consider him to be 7 footer, but not 7'1". I don't assign any meaningful difference between 6'11 and 7/8 and 7 feet flat. Indeed, it is also possible that Shaq considers himself to be something like 6'11 and 7/8, having been measured at that mark, but in reality is right at or slightly over the 7 foot flat barrier. I could be wrong, but I doubt he's one of those guys who has measured himself repeatedly, at different times of the day, trying to hit the 7 foot mark. Bottom line: absent further information, I would say 6'11 and 7/8, though I consider that close enough to label him a 7 footer. He is, however, DEFINITELY not only .625 inches shorter than Kareem, as this site suggests.
Mikew said on 24/Jun/09
It's "ridiculous" that an NBA player is about once inch shorter than his listed height? (Shaq fessed up to a drop below 7 feet, which probably meant something like 6'11 and 7/8, as opposed to 6'11.5"). Indeed, anyone with a brain knows that NBA players, on average, are MORE than one inch shorter than their listed height (probably about 1.5 inches, with some variation of course going both ways). The only reason why some Shaq fans on this board (and by the way, I count myself as a big fan) are so resistant to the effective admission of 6'11 and 7/8 is that such a measurement is on the wrong side of the "magical" seven foot barrier. If Shaq said he was exactly 7 feet barefoot, then none of the fanboys would be protesting that he's 7'1". To me, there is no effective difference between 6'11 and 7/8 and 7 feet flat. Either way, I would label the person as a seven footer.

Shaq said on 26/Feb/09
lsu alum that wasn't actually me posting about the life size cutout. I still think he's 7'1", but you're entitled to your opinion that he's 6'11.5".
Regarding Shaq's NBA career, yes he has been dissapointing in some ways. He is though as you say one of the all time greats. I think the times when Shaq dissapointed me was the 2002-2003 season. The Lakers had won 3 in a row and Shaq had a minor toe injury that could have been healed with surgery easily before training camp. However Shaq opted to wait to have the srugery with the logic "I was hurt on company time, so I'll heal on company time". They lost that series to San Antonio in 6 games and homecourt advantage would have helped a lot(which Shaq may have cost them because of the toe injury). The Lakers were 4-11 without Shaq that season so Shaq's selfishness no doubt hurt them in the standards. Even with that if Horry's shot doesn't rim out in game 5 they probably would have won the series. I still believe that if not for Shaq's selfish approach that season that the Lakers would have won atleast 4 in a row, maybe even more.
Another thing is how well he's played in Phoenix this year. It makes you wonder how hard he was trying those last 2 years before this one. Shaq and Wade playing together at the level each are playing this year in the East would be a championship contender. Plus if he kept his weight down in the middle of this decade he may have not had those toe problems.
So despite being hands down a top 10 player of all time, I agree that with the work ethic of Russell or Jordan he would have been the best ever. His combination of size, athleticism, footwork and passing ability couldn't be stopped. It can be argued that his peak(2000) was as good as anyone's and you could see by how he started his career(first 3 seasons) and his peak(the Lakers 3peat) that he could have been even better.

Bosh isn't in the 6'9" to 6'10" range either. Bosh was measured 6'10.25" barefoot at 19 and he's likely grown to 6'11" like he claims.

I am a fan of Dwight Howard and his dunks are impression but when you're about 6'10 you should be able to make most of those....
Most 6'10" guys can easily dunk but nowhere near the way that Howard does it. What's scary is that Howard has a 7'5" wing span and can get his head above the rim. The only other NBA player I saw get his head at the rim level was Dominique Wilkins. Jordan and Dr. J. couldn't. If Howard had saved that dunk on the 12 foot rim for the final, he would have won going away.

Now Nate Robinson who is listed at 5'9 but really about 5'8 is really impressive. VERY rare do you see anyone that height dunk, you'll have guys 6'2-6'4 who can't dunk sometimes. Shortest guy to ever dunk was 5'6.

Dwight was measured 6'9" without shoes in 1994 and then he claimed to be 6'9.5" in 2006. I think he's atleast 6'9.5". Howard looks pretty close to Tim Duncan's height here and Duncan is atleast 6'10", maybe 6'10.5".
Click Here 6'8.75" Al Horford is closer to the camera and his basketball shoes probably give a little more height than Dwight's dress shoes, but Dwight still looks a little taller.
Click HereHoward is either 6'9.5" or 6'10". He's clearly grown, that was obvious watching him in the dunk contest.

no way does Shaq only gain a .5" height advantage from the foot wear he wears! He gains at least an 1 inch from his big chunky shoes. And I think Shaq's barefoot height is roughly 7-7,1" depending on the time of day of the measurement.

SayHeyKid has very convincing arguments. I think he has understood the psychological effect of height way better than anyone else here. This allows him to stay objective in his assertion. I also believe he is 6 ft 11 7/8. It might destroy some fan's world, but I assure you that Shaq still sleeps well, even if he's below the 7ft1 mark
SayHeyKid said on 18/Jan/09
Clay: A couple of points. First, it is not a "theory" or even a "comment;" it is an admission by the subject himself. I have already elaborated why that admission is more reliable than the other statements admittedly made by Shaq claiming 7'1" (putting aside for the moment that, in those cases, Shaq doesn't say, "I'm 7'1" barefoot, instead saying "I'm 7'1", three hundred and ____ pounds").
Second, your generic comments regarding "picture evidence," as well as the comment regarding Amare in particular, like many of the comments that I've read on this board, involve more begging of the question and circular argument. We all know that certain pictures show certain things and are subject to various factors, putting aside the obvious fact that you may not even know what, for example, Amare's exact barefoot height is (even with a reported measurement). Moreover, whether Amare "looks" 3.5 inches taller or 4 inches (or 4.5) in a single photo is hardly dispositive, and is certainly way less relevant than what the man admitted, outside the kayfabe universe.
Can a man who is, as I assert, for all intents and purpose, 7 feet barefoot (6'11" and 7/8 to be more exact, as per his admission) look a mere inch taller in some photos? Of course. Shaw probably looks anywhere from 6'11" to 7'1" in countless photos, with the middle being closer to the truth. Again, I am not claiming that Shaq is several inches below his billed height; rather that he is about 1 inch (and a hair) below. If the admission was 7 feet flat, there would be no discussion. Unfortunately, too many jock sniffers and fanboys can't accept a "hair below 7 feet."
Shaq is one of my favorite athletes of all time, and it makes no difference to me whether, barefoot, he is 6'11" and 7/8, 7 or 7'1." Obviously, it does to many on this board.

For the hundredth time, people, Shaq was not measured at 7'1"; this was the reported "measurement" listed on draftexpress.com. The relevant quote from the site is as follows:
"Measurements prior to 2000 are based on newspaper articles rather than official league documents. While the measurements reported in such articles are reported to be officially from the predraft camp, we are taking those writers at their word and can not completely verify that information."
Clay said on 18/Jan/09
Sayheykid, you are basing this theory on ONE comment Shaq made about his height and are ignoring countless others (where he said 7'1) and you are ignoring picture evidence (at least 4inches over Amare Stoudemire, level with Dalip Singh). I agree with what you're saying its barely noticable to tell a one innch difference, but lets not slight the guy he is 7'1''.
And for the record, these myths about Khali being listed at 6'11 or whatever in India are just that, myths. He was listed at either 7'1 or 7'2 in his bodybuilding endeavors in the late 90's and he says he's 7'2 - which he more than likely is out of bed.
the squirell said on 14/Jan/09
shaq is at least 7ft and more likely 7'1. I say this because he has been accurately measured at that height. He also looks 7'1.
SayHeyKid said on 13/Jan/09
Again, no one is doubting that Shaq can "look" 7'1." I am not stating that he is inches below his listed height, unlike others. He clearly is not. We are talking about a 1 inch and a hair difference (i.e., difference between 7'1" and say anywhere from 6'11 and 5/8 to 6'11" and 7/8). Essentially, for all intents and purposes, we are talking about whether he is 7 feet or 7'1".
Finally, the so-called barefoot measurement was just that, so-called.
As I posted earlier, the the pre-draft measurements prior to 2000 listed on the draftexpress web site (I believe draftexpress.com) are based on newspaper articles and other sources, and are not based on actual measurements or otherwise subject to verification. See the note on the bottom of the relevant website page.

SayHeyKid, after months of reading comments on Shaq's height. I have to say your scenario makes more sense then anything else I've read period.
SayHeyKid said on 5/Jan/09
Let me try to post this again:
I understand that Shaq has also claimed 7'1" but let's look at it logically. There are two possible scenarios. In the first, we have an athlete, in a sport notorious for "overbilling" (up to several inches in some cases), who is in fact his billed height but who was merely "joking" when he stated, in a non-basketball setting, that he was actually a tiny drop below 7 feet barefoot. Under the second and I submit far more likely scenario, we have a basketball player who, in a moment of candor, simply admitted that his real height was actually just about an inch less than his billed height.
In short, is it more likely that the "exaggeration," such as it is since we are only talking about approximately 1 inch, is in the form of the "billed height" or an admission made outside his professional environment? Obviously the former. Think about it. If "Wrestler A" is billed at 6'8" but states in a non-wrestling interview that he is actually 6'7", would anyone think that "Wrestler A" was only "joking" when he admitted that he was 1 inch shorter than his billed height? Of course not. This is not limited to wrestling. Take basketball. If Magic Johnson (billed mostly at 6'8") stated in an interview that he was actually 6'7", would anyone think he was "joking"? Ridiculous. So what's really going on here? Why are people so adamant that Shaq was "joking?" The obvious answer is that fandom requires that he be over the magical 7 foot mark. If Shaq had stated that he was a drop over 7 feet (say 7 and 1/16ths of an inch), we would not be hearing any of this "joking" nonsense, as his fans would readily accept that he was 7 feet barefoot, as opposed to 7'1". But since the admission fell, ever so narrowly, on the "wrong side" of the 7 foot mark, . . . .
Atoadaso said on 1/Jan/09
Shaq may have said he was under 7' on Stern but he has also stated he is 7'1" on several occasions, as already pointed out. An inch+ can be discerned when you have enough benchmarks to compare with; the other NBA players being perfect for this...
Shaq said on 30/Dec/08
JT and Clay are 100% right.
SayHeyKid said on 29/Dec/08
I have no doubt that Shaq looked or looks 7'0" or 7'1". People, there is no way to look at someone Shaq's size and to be able to discern whether he is 6'11' and 7/8 barefoot or 7'0 or 7'1" (or even 7'2" for that matter). Not only is he in shoes, but we're talking about essentially an inch at most (from a hair, literally under 7 to 7'1"). The man could be 6'11 and 7/8, 7'0" flat, 7'0.5, 7'0.6 and so on and so on (probably up to 7'3 ish) before one could tell a difference. Again, it doesn't matter to me on which side of the 7 foot barrier the man falls. Putting aside Shaq's admission for a moment, I will say that I am extremely confident that a 60 year old Kareem is more than .625 inches taller than Shaq, as this site suggests.

SayHeyKid said on 28/Dec/08
Get over it? Unlike others on this thread (e.g., fanboys who call themselves "Shaq"), I couldn't care less whether Shaq is a drop under 7 feet barefoot, or slightly over the mark. I love the guy; however, correcting someone over a quarter or half of an inch, in this context, was obviously not a joke, notwithstanding the protestations to the contrary from the obsessed fanboys. Talk about a nonsensical, circular explanation. A tautology if you will. A cat is a cat because it's a cat, huh? The context in which the statement was made was one of an admission, that, contrary to popular belief, he was not quite, though ever so close, to being 7 feet barefoot. Of course he looks 7'1" many times . . people, we are talking about a 1 inch difference, which is erased right off the bat with any type of shoes, much less high top basketball shoes. The man is 7'1", but with shoes on. We are admittedly not talking about a guy (e.g., Stallone) who claims several more inches than what he is. Shaq's listing is in line with most NBA listings, in fact probably even understated. Many people are listed 2 plus inches taller than their actual, barefoot heights. Finally, a correction is in order: the draft express site, which states w/shoes and w/shoes measurements, wherein Shaq is stated to be 7'1" without shoes, is misleading because the pre-draft measurements prior to 2000 are based on newspaper articles and other sources and are not based on actual measurements or otherwise subject to verification. See the note on the bottom of the relevant website page.
People, I am not one of these people determined to downgrade people, much less people that I really like (like Shaq). I understand from perusing this site that there are others who are so inclined, but I'm not one of them. So, I don't need to get "over it."
JT said on 28/Dec/08
In a recent TV interview, Shaq also said straight-faced several times that Yao Ming was 7'9". The announcers afterwards had to tell the audience that Shaq obviously knew that Yao was nowhere near 7'9" and that he was just joking about Yao's height.
Clay said on 27/Dec/08
Actually, champ, it makes sense for him to be joking when he said ''im 6'11.5'' like he is almost a seven footer but not quite. Shaq was measured 7'1'' and looks every bit of it get over yourself.
Shaq said on 27/Dec/08
Shaq was joking because Howard made a comment about Shaq being 7 feet and Shaq replied like a smart a$$ by saying 6'11.5", 6'11.75" because that's a height just under 7 feet. Correcting someone over a quarter or half of an inch is obviously a joke.
Shaq looks 7'1"+ in almost every picture, he's claimed 7'1" 5+ times and he was measured 7'1" WITHOUT SHOES at the 1992 Chicago pre-draft camp. He towers over guys 6'8"-6'10"(Tim Duncan, Amare Stoudemire, Hakeem Olajuwon, Grant Hill ect.) and he looks 7'1" next to known 7'0"-7'1" guys like Khali, Joel Pryzbilla ect. and he has about a head on 6'3"-6'4" guys like Dwyane Wade.
He's 7'1", get over it.
SayHeyKid said on 27/Dec/08
I heard him say on the Howard Stern show that he was just under 7 feet. Other people have pointed this out but, for some reason, this has been cast aside. The only explanation that I've read on this site (correct me if I am wrong) for what would obviously be dispositive evidence (the converse isn't obviously true as many people overstate their height) is that he was "joking." This makes no sense at all. It would be hardly be a "joke" to state that you are about one inch shorter than your listed height (7'1" to 6'11' 3/4-7/8). Now, if Shaq stated that he was considerably shorter than his listed height (say 6'8"), then one would obviously (correctly) conclude (along with all of the pictorial evidence and common sense) that he was joking. He was clearly not "joking." Howard followed up and Shaq repeated himself, and there was no joking tone involved. People, if someone is listed at 6'4" but confess that they are in fact 6'3", they are not "joking." There is no joke. Again, if the 6'4" listed person says he's 5'10", that's another story. Bottom line: there is obviously some sort of psychological need for some to have Shaq be over 7 feet barefoot. I'm not sure why. Believe me, I am a huge Shaq fan and it makes no difference to me whether, barefoot, he is 7 feet or 6'11" and 3/4 or 7/8. For all intents and purposes, the man is 7 feet tall.

yeah all of them sound accurate...cept gallinari who was listed 202 cm in italy, but i think his grown to about 205-206 cm. And barkley's height remains a mystery. Personally i peg him at 196.5 cm or 6'5.25".

Yes it's true but Gheorghe is slouch...in the 2004 comparison Yao, Bradley, Yao looks 1"-1.5" shorter than Bradley but someone claim him taller...in the 2003 comparison Yao looks shorter only for 0.5"-1" but Yao is closer to the camera...
Atoadaso said on 28/Nov/08
go to Sun's site... there are pics of them standing side by side facing the camera. Sun is around 1.5" taller than Muresan. It's clear.

anonymous,
I am still trying to figure out how did you see Khali taller than Shaq in that pic. In that pic Shaq is clearly taller.
ichiban, your estimation is one of the most accurate estimation I have ever seen, good work
Clay said on 26/Nov/08
I dont jump to conclusions after the Shaq/Khali pic. We dont know about shoes, thats a fact and the camera angle is a little crooked. Still they're basically the same height.

sun ming through his interpreter said he was 7'8 on jimmy kimmel about a year back, the video has since been removed from youtube :(
muresan also stood next to shawn bradley
Click Here and played against manute bol so he is used to standing next to equally gigantic individuals as himself
apparently he either stood next to or played basketball against jorge "giant" gonzales too, a few people have claimed this, i have yet to see any evidence of this however
Alex said on 25/Nov/08
Actually I read Sun Ming Ming is 7'8 3/4 and 7'9. He looks about 1 1/2 inches taller than Muresan so maybe Muresan is 7'7 1/2?
Alex said on 25/Nov/08
How tall is Sun Ming Ming though? 7'8 right since Muresan is 7'7?
Probably was the first person he met taller than him. At 7'7 you could go your whole life without seeing anyone your height, let alone taller.
Viper said on 24/Nov/08
Is that the first guy Muresan has ever met thats taller than him?
Richard said on 24/Nov/08
I'm not so sure Shaq really is 7'1... maybe in his shoes.

Nobody of you, had noticed that shaq doesn't have hair, instead khaly has massive hair and give impression to be taller, but that's only a fake impression believe me.
greetings

There is a shot of 6'3'' Batista ON TIPPY TOES giving up a full head to Khali. I guess he's 5'11-6'0 if Khali and Shaq are only 6'11-6'11.5. *shakes head*.

Alex said on 17/Nov/08
3 inches shorter than 7'6 Yao? Wow, maybe it was a certan angle because normally I see around 5 inches difference.

He looked very tall even next to Yao yesterday. 3" max shorter strangely. I agree he's playing very well and shockingly even hitting his free throws at a decent %(62%) while shooting 65% from the floor. 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks vs Yao and vs Milwaukee he had 29 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and shot 12-16 from the floor.
Can you get a pick!

That 6'11.5 for Shaq needs to be thrown out the window. First off I never even seen proof that he claimed that height on a radio show. People are just saying that. We have seen proof that he's been measured 7'1 barefoot.

Khali at 6'11"? HAHAHAHAHAHA! You're desperate at this point to make that ridiculous 6'11.5" estimate fit. Khali at 6'11" makes Big Show 6'10" max, do you believe that too?
And that puts taker and kane at around 6'5.5".

uhm clay he pushed down only 1 person and maybe yao on one knee but not 4 or more :/ anyway shaq at 7'1 sounds about right the same height as khali .

lsu alum Shaq screwed up Chuck's eye a bit and Barkley isn't 6'4". You don't think Shaq could beat anyone up if he wanted? What a crazy statement.
Alex said on 14/Nov/08
Cycklops, Shaq has been measured 7'1 barefoot so we know hes that tall and him and Khali were dead on the same height I think. Khali had an inch on Big Show so Shaq would have the same I believe.

the reason khail, and oneal look the same height is because khali is 6'11"look at the old bodybuilding articles of him.that schould make SHAQ think a little, and i do mean a little, with that brain,he certainly cant think alot.
Cycklops said on 14/Nov/08
I've had these measurements for awhile and so far they hold up pretty well whenever a new photo is revealed...all measurements are barefoot heights.
Undertaker 6'7.5"
Kevin Nash 6'9"
Andre the Giant 6'9.75"
Big Show 6'10.5"
Great Khali 6'11.5"
I had Shaq at 6'11.5" and after seeing him next to Khali, he looks even or maybe a tiny smidge taller. 6'11.75" sounds good for Shaq.

This is the best he's played since Miami won the championship. He seems pretty agile, fairly athletic and his footwork looks great.
Seems about right ichiban. Except Garnett I believe is 6'11.75" like he claims, Carmelo is 6'6.25", Duncan is 6'10"-6'10.5", Dwight Howard is 6'9.5", Khali is 7'1", Big Show is 7'0" and Gasol is 7'0.5".

It was more like 3 but who's counting. With the weight loss, Shaq is starting to play like he did 5 years ago.
