Andre would have turned 73 today. He lived a tragically short life of 46 years.

RIP Andre xxx 💐🌸🌹🏵️🌷🥀💐

7ft.

A solid 6'11 fellow, maybe close to 7'0 at his full peak. At his death honestly, he lost a lot of height. Maybe 6'9.75" when he died.

Hockey skates give you 3.25-3.5 inches, so that is just stupid and not good to use..Probert is standing 6'6.5-6'7 in skates. If you see NHLers in equipment they look ginormous on even ground yet get them out of gear and skates after the game they quickly look more normal.

@ 62B...all good points you made.

Looks like Bob Probert is probably in full uniform & skates with Hillbilly Jim. Those ice skate will give you about a 1.5” to 1.75” footwear advantage over a sneaker. Which is likely what Jim had in seeing HD was wearing zubaz workout pants.

Gretz. I know you have spent tons of time researching Andre. Personally I don't think he was ever 7'1". Andre was just to far away from a true 7'3" guy when I saw him, and all of the Wilt pictures back that up. I get it I have no tangible proof, only a personal experience. Still, reality I think is a peak Andre at 7' morning and probably down to 6'11 before bed. Broken down Andre early 90's probably still had an afternoon standing around height of 6'9+ with the ability to stretch out to over 6'10" if he wanted to.

Sotiris! A very telling video of Andre there with the manager slick ... and yes it is true that Slick’s true legit height was 6’3” ! He often got billed @6’4” & 6’5”. But, he’s actually 6’3”. Slick did wear cowboy dress boots a lot though. Also, take note...That André with shoes on was shorter than that 7’0” doorway. But, we all know that was older broken down André ... approximately 1.5” to 2” shorter than his peak height of the 1970s into the early 1980s. By judging from that 7’0” doorway...André at that point was 6’10.5” with shoes on. Possibly if he was to stretch out as much as possible he maybe could’ve pulled off a 6’11” measurement with those shoes on. But, this does confirm that late 1980s Andre with shoes on and at night time was indeed shorter than 7’0”... The question is how thick were the soles in those shoes ? I’d say 6’9.5” evening barefoot height for a late 1980s Andre the giant is a pretty accurate guess...IMO. If slick was wearing his dress cowboy boots like he did a lot in that era ... he would’ve been standing approximately 6’4.75”... and by taking that into factor along with the doorway ...André looks 6’10.5” (in-shoes) there.

_______________

RP, not sure what year that video was. But if those doors are in fact 7', then the door way itself is at least 7'1". Andre also never even came close to standing straight in that clip. A broken down Andre probably did have a standing around height of 6'9.5", but he also gave up lot in posture in those days. More than a half an inch for sure.

@Gretz To me, Hillbilly Jim and Hogan were around the same height, max 6'5", provided Hogan wasn't in his cowboy boots and they had equal footwear... Click Here , Click Here , Click Here

@RP Yeah, I definitely agree that Slick's in his cowboys boots there. As for a Andre at this point in his life, he definitely has poor posture and looks to be 6'9.5"... perhaps even as low as 6'9".

Here's max 6'3" Dwyane Wade w/ max 6'8" Alonzo Mourning... Click Here

As compared to Slick and Andre... Click Here

@Gretz Agreed, dude, this is an older Andre, not Andre in his prime. To Andre's credit, a tall guy can easily look 1" shorter w/ bad posture, or a weird camera angle, so maybe he was taller than I believe... That said, maybe he was 6'11" peak height as a young, thin man.

That is a 7 ft door Andre is standing next to, and this is Andre at his worst physically. Not a good clip to judge by. I don’t know if you noticed all the hunching and hobbling...Look up this version of Andre next to Tenta, who was 6’5” at the bare minimum. Even a broken down crippled Andre looks 6’10” compared to Tenta. Not 7’4” or 5, but definitely taller than 6’9” or 10” peak height.

I just watched The Princess Bride and he looks easily a foot taller than 5'11" listed Cary Elwes.

What also shocked me was the size of his head, i think that is a legit 11 inch head.

Closer to 12" if not slightly more.

--------

That was no analysis just a number I put out there as its over the normal. Yes I agree his head could be that long, its huge because of his condition.

At Sotiris,
That’s Jeff Everson. He recently passed away. Back in the 80’s & 90’s all the bodybuilding magazines used to list him @ 6’0”...however, I actually met Jeff once at a fitness expo in Miami, FL in 1997...I was 21 years old going on 22. and I judged him @ only 5’11”... and I’m a pretty good judge of 5’11”. Since I’m also 5’11” barefoot, LOL! That being said, I sure hope he was on his tip toes in that pic with Big John Studd! Otherwise, Studd isn’t even 6’5” in that photo!!!

In pictures with guys around 6-5, Andre can look way under 7 feet, probably under 6-10...I.E. Chuck Wepner, Don Leo Jonathan. Ironically, with even taller guys in the 6-8 or 6-9 range, like Ron Fuller and Elmer, he looks closer to around 6-11.

Most everyone here knows how I ran into Andre and got knocked on my butt. You all know I estimate him at the time (1988) at 6'11" in the mid morning. Andre with his massive body and long spine realistically was one of those guys who lost an inch over the course of the day. So Gretz, I believe what you read that an employee figured Andre was 6'10 3/4" at WM3. Likely evening and in his wrestling boots from the sounds of it. Barefoot evening at WM3 he was probably 6'10"-6'10.5". I know his body was breaking down, but I still don't think he would have lost more than an inch peak by then. I think Andre was probably the full 7' peak, but in the morning, maybe even 7'.05". I think if we are going to go by late afternoon/early evening that I would be Okay with 6'11"/6'11.5" for his peak.

Also I read reports that Andre backstage at WW3 was 6'10.75,A guy that worked there said he would estimate Andre`s height when he went past a certain door.(and know I can`t prove it)and college students estimated him using pixels from a tv that Andre was 5 inches taller than Hogan at the time.It makes sense since in 1984 if Andre raises his huge head he is tall as Wilt, but in another pic when he is looking down he loses 2+ inches.

Hey guys been gone but know im back, just recently watchad a match with andre and big John Studd from circa 1977.I have to say this confirms for me Andre was at some point 7'0".Studd may have been 6'7" at the time and Andre dwarfs him by 5.5 6 inches.I actually think he is close to 7'1" in this video, and Studd is not wide like he was taking growth hormone.its on you tube if you want to see it,and no matter his peak height he is one of the most massive humans that ever walked the earth.i think he was 7'0" till at least 1978 in the pic with Backlund with cinder blocks actually verifing his 7'0" stature.there are 5 or 6 pics with him standing very close to the blocks verifing it(although I know this is not totally accurate)it puts him in the that aria.Watch it and you will see how mobile he is he could probably still do a drop kick at this point but vince sr. told him not to he wanted him to act like an unmovable giant.

Thats a good one, to me peak Big SHow in 95 looked taller than Andre but WCW did have lots of 5'10 guys at the time.
When you see mid 70's footage of Andre he looks 7ft. Peak height I expect them both to be touching 7ft.
My first WWF in tour in 91 I saw Andre, stooped over on crutches and he was nowhere near 7ft, he was still taller than legit 6'5+ Earthquake though.
I saw Big Show in 03 and he didnt look 7ft either though but both have such strange proportions its hard to tell.

@Erik C. Dude, the reason ppl doubt your height claim is b/c it keeps changing every time you post something, lol. You now say your 6-foot friends come up to your nose/eye level -- as opposed to your previous statement where you allege that you have a full head on 6'1" guys. My best advice, take a full-body pic where you're licking the top of one of your doors and post it here. Preferably while standing next to a life-size cardboard standup cutout of Andre the Giant. Granted, blowing up a photo to accommodate Andre's massive size will be somewhat costly, but it'll be well worth the effort. I trust you'll have this done by the end of the week -- I know you won't let me down. I'll be waiting. Otherwise, ppl will simply assume that for whatever reason, you're telling tall tales (pun intended). Here's a website that can do it for you... Click Here They use better quality foam board.

When I was 14, my mom and brother went to Greece for a month and they were startled by how skinny I got over the summer, partly due to my growth spurt and going to the local swimming pool every day. The craziest growth spurt would have to be that of Dennis Rodman. Not sure if Rodman's tale is bona fide or perhaps exaggerated poetic license.

Measure yourself with a measuring tape end of story. This site is about Andre's height so I see no reason to be arguing about how tall you are when you could very easily measure yourself and if you were as tall as you say then you would have already measured yourself for sure. Plus how could your 6'7 coach come to your eyes and now your all of a sudden 6'6 coach comes to your forehead.

@Sotiris just wanted to comment on growth spurts a little. For me I was 5'3" at the end of my freshman year in high school. During the 3 month summer I grew to 5'10" by the beginning of the 10th grade. 7" in 3 months! The growth pains were horrible. People would comment that they thought they could actually see me growing. By the 11th grade I was 6'1"-6'2" and by my senior year I was 6'3". I didn't stop growing until 19 when in the Army at 6'3 1/4". Now at age 50, thanks to ankylosing spondylitis I have shrunk to 6'2 1/2".
Ellis said on 25/Mar/19
@Erik C.: You didn't cause a problem, I was just in disbelief of how tall you are, it just seems extremely rare to me and how you answer and respond makes me very skeptical if you are really that height. @Sotiris: I'm not just a normal someone, I literally almost a foot taller right now than I was when I turned 14, I had and am still on a massive growth spurt. I respect what you said I just didn't like how you engaged with me inferring you thought that I was trolling. P.S. Most of someone's growth spurt during puberty is done by age 16. Again, you said you were only 6'1" by age 15.

@cmillzz Maybe he's actually taller and pretending to be shorter...

@62B Most short ppl have no clue as to the height of tall ppl. They usually just ask how tall I am while giggling and don't take a stab at it. I hate entering and leaving a restaurant b/c ppl are seated and my height is accentuated. That's when ppl really gawk and that irks me somewhat. This one time, a lanky dude seated near me at a restaurant kept staring b/c I have a long torso and he was surprised that I was taller. At first I thought he was flirting or something, but he had his lady friend w/ him. Suffice it to say, we got up and left at around the same time and b/c of his long legs, we were pretty much the same height. What I really hate is when guys will actually get off the sidewalk and go on the street rather than walk by me, whereas women are super friendly and show no sign of being intimidated. That being said, at night, I will always cross the street rather than walk behind a woman who's by herself. That's when terror sets in and the cellphone gets whipped out, pretending to be on the phone w/ somebody, which is totally understandable. Sorry for rambling. Actually, one more thing... when I go speed-walking is the worst. That's when ppl look back in fear b/c they hear me coming, lol. I'm only 275 lbs now, but when I was 305 lbs, ppl were genuinely afraid, I kid you not. Having a beard makes it worse.

Sotiris, was wondering how often people guess you taller than you are, and by how much? Most people seem to guess me at 6'4" when my true barefoot afternoon/early evening height is now 6'2.5".
Sotiris Gravas said on 22/Mar/19
@Ellis If I understand correctly, you've said that you're 6'8" in the morning. That would make your "real" height around 6'7.5" later in the day. How can a 6'1" person reach your lips? I wake up at 6'7.5" (sometimes 6'7.75"), and 5'11" reaches my lip area. Please explain. You said at 15 you were only 6'1", which I also find very odd. I was maybe 6'4.5" at 15. What you say doesn't add up, dude. Not sure if Erik C is trolling, but I'm left wondering if you are...

If Andre ever saw 7'0 it was straight out of bed.

He looked 6'10/6'10.5 range in the 70/80's, could only look taller with cowboy boots or a box.

From around 1988/89 onwards when his health starting failing at times he could look under 6'10.

I truly believe that when he was younger and slender, mid 20s he saw 7 foot and yes closer to the morning but still he saw it if he ever checked, then after that he started gaining weight and the pressure on his spine gradually lessened his height. Yea guys he did see the 6'10 range but that was decades into grabbing people and picking them up 300 days a year, I think anyone would experience that much of a height loss if they were sporting 400 pounds of weight and constantly harming their spine. I let my case rest lol.

Agreed - never saw 7' let alone 7'4".

Height exaggeration is a professional obligation in wrestling. No harm no foul.

Was about 6'10" IMMHO but given acromegaly - even at that massive height - Andre still had the oversized hands, head etc. that would proportionally fit someone well in excess of 7 feet - so passing him off at 7'4" or more had some decent support - albeit illusory in respect of Andre's true height.

When ppl say, "wowww! you're so tall!". I just say. No i'm not, you're so short. Or when ppl ask me how tall I am, it annoys me so much I just reply, I don't talk about it. All i know im absolutely tower over my 6'1 sports coach. He doesn't even make it to my adoms apple. And i have a 6'5" coach who comes up to my mouth. My 6'7" former basketball coach comes up to my eyes. And i can literally lick my house doors if i wanted to caz they're so short. Which would make me over 6'8 i think bc i heard something about doorways only being 6'8". Also, perhaps i should go purchase a measuring tape bc i have what i would consider a "low" ceiling in my house and my head literally no joke is like a few inches away from the top. My dream is to keep growing and growing which hopefully i have loads of time since im 15 yro.

Cool topic—maybe 7ft morning measurement when young, got gradually less over time. Andre also had longer arms than Big Show if you look at comparisons, and arm length “kinda” plays into height also, along with shoulder width for reaching and grabbing, etc. I saw a pic of Big John Studd a number of years ago with a guy who is in my profession who was about 6’0 225 and could bench press 430 lbs. The guy was dwarfed by BJS but BJS also gained fat after he retired when the pic was taken, and he surely had tall boots on cuz I was told by the “small guy” that BJS was 6’9....anyway, BJS was a big step down from André, and most of us are two big steps down from BJS!!!

Sotiris Gravas said on 22/Feb/19
@HarveyFinkelmatter Thanks, dude. I'll have to look into it. Given that it was believed The Duke wore lifts, it would be hard to say for certain. For all we know, maybe he wore custom-made cowboy boots giving him more height than the standard 1.75" heel. When he appeared on "Phil Donahue" (1976), a 6'0" Donahue referred to him as possibly being 6'2", to which he quickly interjected, "Four!" He looked more 6'2.5" in that video clip, and Wayne was getting on in years, so height loss was a definite reality. Of course, he could've been in lifts there, too. :) Whereas Jesse Ventura wasn't a fan of Hogan and could have said Hogan wore lifts just to spite him, Rock Hudson and Wayne were supposedly friends and Hudson still claimed Wayne wore lifts and had small feet.

@RoelC The fact that said co-author believed Studd wore 4" lifts to be eye-to-eye w/ Andre certainly detracts from his credibility... Whether Hogan wore lifts or not, both he and John Wayne benefited from a cowboy boot boost.

@Boss We all hear rumors that wrestlers wore lifts... seeing it in print in a book like "Sex, Lies, and Headlocks," or having Jesse Ventura say that it was indeed the case definitely lends credence to it being factual and not just something to dismiss as mere hearsay. Thanks for posting that. I wonder how many others might have worn lifts...
-------------------
It might not be hearsay, but just because it's written in a book does not make it true. Mike Mooneyham was one of the co-authors of the book 'Sex, Lies & Headlocks' and he also claimed that Big John Studd wore 4-inch lifts in his boots so he could look eye to eye with Andre the Giant.

The same book also claims Andre was about 6'11".

I would take anything Jesse Ventura says about Hogan or anything Hogan says about Ventura with a huge grain of salt. It's no secret that those two guys hate each other and have been bashing each other in interviews for over 25 years.

If Hogan wore lifts, it does not make Andre any taller. It would make Hogan shorter. Hogan stood next to many people besides Andre, and he never looked more than 6'6" in his footwear, unless he was wearing cowboy boots. Hogan only looked 4 inches taller than Vince McMahon and about 3 inches taller than Tony Atlas back in his early WWF days.
Besides, why in the blue hell would Hogan were lifts when he's facing off a guy like Andre. Who was the giant in the WWF again?
Boss said on 20/Feb/19
I don't know how anyone could read that whole thing and have any doubt about what Jody Hamilton saw unless they're just trying to support their own agenda. He was very adamant about it and detailed or he wouldn't even have mentioned it. Just by reading the emotional response to the Fabe comments I have absolutely no doubt he was telling the truth. I would love to find that old tv footage from NWA Allstars wrestling in Vancouver of the measurement but maybe someday it will pop up online somewhere. Haystacks Calhoun was wrestling for them in this era as well which adds more credence to the story. He also mentions the fact that Andre wasn't wrestling in North America at this time which was absolutely correct and he's going back 35 years here. Andre's enormous head size and posture make him look shorter in comparison with tall people as his head was 3" longer or more than most people he's being compared to. So their natural height reference points are higher but Andre's head is much longer than their heads which we can see in the Wilt pics.
Andre definitely lost height over his life but could still look 6'10" even at the end. He was too big to fit in the crematorium in France which could only accommodate up to a 6'10" man. I believe the whole 6'10" thing came from Andre's earlier billings as Andre still grew in height until early 1970's. He started wrestling at 17 in 1964 and grew in height till age 24-25. Anything else is just speculation or guessing.

Here is Terry Todds full response that didn't post for some reason

terry todd, July 12, 2010:

JT,

I just became aware of your post and thought I’d respond. I agree that the Big Show of ten years ago would be very close to Mark in shoulder breadth. I saw him many times during that period and he was truly broad–and also very strong in his shoulders even though he didn’t push it in the gym even then. Regarding his hand size relative to Andre’s, having been around both quite often I have to disagree as I believe Andre’s hands were significantly wider than Big Show’s–just as
Andre’s feet were much larger in both length and width than Show’s.

I agree with your general points about Howard, although he’s so much wider than almost all of the other NBA big men that his measurement would be interesting to see–although not up in the Henry, Williams, and Show category. As for Andre’s height, he was a good 7′ early in his career, and maybe a bit more, but age, a terrible back, and gravity brought him “down” a peg or two. I saw him on several occasions when he weighed over 500 pounds, but I also saw him in Georgia shortly after he cam down from Canada and I suspect he was within 15 pounds of 400, one way or the other. This was about 40 years ago; I went backstage to meet him, interview him, and take a few photos with him. I still recall how “inhuman” he looked and how amazingly agile he was. For example, at one point in the match he ran across the ring, jumped over the top rope, caught the top rope in one hand for contril as he went over, and landed on the floor just outside the ring

Here is Terry Todd who was 6'2" spenthe time with both Andre and Paul Wight replying to JT on who was taller and bigger of the 2 giants.

JT, May 29, 2010:

Dr. Todd,

If you have the opportunity, your getting some shoulder, wrist and hand measurements of Paul Wight (wrestler Big Show) could be revealing. He’s probably close to Mark Henry’s width.
Wight back in 1999-2000 was arguably wider than he is now. His hands are also about as wide as Andre the Giant’s were but not as long. Like Wight and Andre, Dalip Singh (wrestler Great Khali) has a huge frame and hands as well due to acromegaly/gigantism and is the tallest of the three.

A shoulder measurement of Dwight Howard sounds interesting but would probably be disappointing. With television screens now in the 16:9 format, everyone looks wider than they really are. If you switch the screen to the old 4:3 format, Howard still looks wide but not quite as impressive. His square (rather than sloped) shoulders and narrow waist also add to the illusion of width. At a legit 6’10”, he’s still a remarkable athlete.

I really enjoyed your SI article about Andre the Giant. As Andre has since passed away, can you share some insight on his real height and overall size? After factoring in the afro and cowboy boots that he almost always wore outside the ring, my best guess is that he was actually closer to 6’10” and probably around 425-450 lbs. when you interviewed him. Wight is roughly 7’0” (he was listed as 7’1” as a center for Wichita State) and generally looks at least 2 inches taller when standing next to the same people that Andre did (or when standing next to persons of the same height that Andre did). Thanks!

Also Hogan isn't great for comparison because of his height loss and when Hogan was hired by WWF back in the day. Vince Sr gave Hogan a thousand dollar sequence robe and a pair of boots with lifts in them so they could bill him taller than his 6'5" range height. Hogan had much bigger boot souls on the outside if his boots than Andre. We know now he was getting more help with internal lifts so Andre would be an extra 1.5" - 2" more barefoot than Hogan in any wrestling boot comparison photo. This is also probably why Hogan gets a 6'6" barefoot height because of his lifts. Jesse Ventura also said Hogan wore lifts and Jesse is a pretty straight forward kind of guy.

aaronius said on 7/Feb/19
i love how everyone wants to downgrade Leon White to 6'2.5" for his peak height, which he may very well have been before he died, just so they can downgrade Hogan.

his draft measurements for the los angeles rams put him at 6'4 1/4" in 1978, thats legit. NFL draft measurements are ALWAYS barefoot

@Sotiris Gravas .. yeah mate. I think today Hulk is around 6'2.5"(my guestimate) Prob 6'3 in boots. In his prime I thought a long time ago he was max 6'5". I used to have a hard time believing he was 6'6" let alone 6'8" lol... He always looked 2" shorter than Sid Eudy & Taker.... I seen an article about 15 years ago that said Andre was actually measured at 6'10", when you compare Hulk if 6'5 & chuck Wepner 6'5"? ... it seems more likely ...

As for Hogan being over 6'3" today, the short answer is no... Click Here I post pics like this and ppl still want to say he's 6'3" or over; come on, guys, seriously...

@Pdoggy Let me get this straight... if ppl post pics you like, all is well w/ the world. If they don't... they're trolls. Got it. FYI: the pics I post are not doctored in any way, shape, or form. The "lonely" comment did make me laugh, though. I can't decide whether you're a clown or a comedian.

@Sotiris Gravas I get your point. But most of your pics are misleading.

For example the pic of Hogan, Hillbilly, IRS and Windham:
- All of them are looking down with Hogan and Hillbilly even leaning on the interviwer.
- Nobody said Windham was a short man. At least 6´4" back then. But as you can see he is wearing cowboy ring boots with high heels.

The you compare 70 year old versions (Slaughter) to men in their prime. That just does not work. My father was measured at 6´3.5" for military and was down to 6´1.5" in his mid 50´s. Of course you loose height with age. And most wrestlers who normally weigh more than average people, compete in a physical sport and get injured can loose more than we might think.

I estimate Hogan at a little over 6´3" nowadays and 6´5.5" in the 1980´s. In the HBO documentary photos about Andre he has Triple H by a good 2 inches at least.

@Boss Coppock is closer to the camera. They do look close in height. In this e-mail he says that Jordan was only "a little shorter"... Click Here The problem is despite being listed as 6'6", Jordan was never more than 6'4.5".

This is Coppock nowadays next to 6'5" peak height Reggie Theus... Click Here

So, just a reminder: a 70-year-old Coppock who used to be 6'5" is now around 6'2".

Hogan is now 65 years old. And I do think Hogan is closer to 6'2" than he is 6'3".

Gravis and the rest of you consider the fact that Hulk Hogan always would like an inch taller than Hillbilly Jim,back in the day.Now Jim is pretty well verified at 6'5"-6'5.5",this tells me Hogan probably topped out at 6'6".And even in 1984 when he won the belt,Andre came backstage and poured Champagne on Hogan`s head and Andre clearly had 6 inches on him and these are better camera angles than from the ring.So to me Andre was very close to if not 7 foot tall even in 1984,there are reports of back stage people saying Andre was 6'10.75 at WW3(some guy would measure Andre when he went through a certain door where he estimated his height before).and this is all speculation, but even Hogan claimed Andre was weighed on a scale at the air port at 680 although I dobt it.

Here are lots of good Andre photos. Andre's head was 13" range which is also shown here in these photos. If someone came up to a tall persons chin say a basketball player and that same person came up to Andre's chin then Andre would be at least 2 to 3 inches taller than the tall person. So the person could come up to the top of Andre's lip or bottom of his nose and come up to the tall man's chin and they would still be same height because of Andre's enormous head size. Also, Andre rarely displayed good posture.

@kritiker

Agree, above all i agree that many of the 6'7 billed guys never saw really that height.
But about the shoes i think kane and big show are on an other level compare to Undertaker, i dont remember super big boots for him.
Kritiker said on 30/Jan/19
With all due respect: Some of the pics used here for comparing are relatively useless. Here is why:

- In many photos you can´t see their feet. Stance, footwear, ground, angle etc. will change the whole situation. See the infamous Wepner/Andre staredown. First, Andre is looking way down on. Second, there are other pics from this encounter where you can see Andre is in wrestling boots, while Wepner wears cowboy boots. Mystery solved.

- Some are really out of proportion. JT has done that on occasion, especially with Andre. It is just impossible for Andre to have the same head, let alone frame size as others. The man had acromegaly and weighed way over 400 pounds for most of his career. Using Mean Gene as a key figure can be misleading, too.

-Footwear in general: I know Andre used to wear cowboy boots in the 1970´s. But not so in the ring. In fact Andre´s boots were relatively flat. Whereas Big Show for example wore pretty thick boots, especially in his WCW days. Let alone guys like Kane or Undertaker.

My thesis may be controversial, but I think both Andre and Big Show at one point in their respective careers peaked at around 6´11". Big Show used thick boots to look over 7 feet, Andre had his afro. Later both lost some height. Andre, due to surgery, weight and untreated acromegaly may have lost a bit more than Show, but I don´t think he got lower than 6´9.5"

I honestly think most wrestlers billed over 6´7" did not even reach that number.

If you look at André early in his prime(between 1975-1981), I believe he was almost 7’3”, he stood taller than a lot of big guys like blackjack Mulligan, and Ernie Ladd, who was 6’11”. But because of his acromegaly, it compressed his spine so bad, and by the time WrestleMania 3, he was about 7’1/2”. They exaggerated his height definitely, but not by much. And also in WrestleMania 3, he was listed as 520lbs. When in reality he was about 605lbs. Either way he was one of a kind and still one of my favorite wrestlers ever.

LOL. Ernie Ladd wasn't 6'11. There is a video on YT, where Ernie admits to being 6'9. Andre was about 3-4" taller than him, so that would put Andre around 7'0...maybe 7'0.5 at his peak.

__________________________-

That's what I have mainly been basing my guess of Andre's height on. That and the fact that he was taller than a guy I knew at the same time who was 6'9". Smits was not quite a half head taller than a 1988 Andre. His head looked to be average on a very tall lanky body giving him the appearance of a pin head. I'd Guess Smits head no longer than 9.5" with Andre coming up just under eye level so probably about 4"shorter giving me my guess of 6'11" for Andre in 1988. I have no problem believing a 6'11" morning Andre dropped closer to 6'10" in the evening and probably being 6'10.5" in the afternoon. A younger peak Andre was probably at least a 1/2" taller and probably held his height longer throughout the day. I don't think its unreasonable to believe a peak Andre could have been 7' out of bed and held it for an hour or so, probably dropping to 6'11" evening and being somewhere in between through out the day. So that is how my brain is working. Let me know if you think I'm off somewhere, because I certainly could be. Lol

You need to rewatch it, because they never said he was 7'4". They said he was 214cm, which is 7'0.25", which was his tallest height BEFORE he started to shrink, both due to posture, ankle injury, back surgery and knee surgery.

@62B a short Arnie (not 6'2") makes sense when looking at him w/ a 5'9" Bruno Sammartino:

Here's a fairly recent one of Arnie, Bruno and a 6'0.5" Trump... Click Here

Here he was w/ 6'2" peak height George H.W. Bush (RIP)... Click Here ,
Click Here Bush was maybe 6'1" in those pics w/ Arnie, back in 1988.. That puts Arnold at around 5'11", a man who might wear lifts nowadays. I used to think he was no more than 6'0".

@Takerfan Sorry if I goofed and confused one guy for the other, but are you sure that's Ted Whitten...?
JT had posted this pic recently, and it says Larry O'Day, not Whitten:
Click Here There's no indication of anyone on their tippy toes...

It does make more sense that O'Day is taller than 6'0"...

Andre is a tough person to peg as far as height goes. He had such unusual proportions, plus a wide, often bent-knee stance. I don't buy anything under 6'10", though. I'm 6'1" and I believe it would take more for me to be eye-to-eye with him than stepping up on the first step of an average staircase.

I watched the movie on Andre on HBO and they said he was 7-4. I think he got back surgery and went down to 7 feet tall.

@Gretz Click Here I know Arnolds height was a hot topic during the Conan movies. My chiropractor met Arnold and got a picture with him in the early 2000's. Arnold had obvious footwear advantage and poofy hair but was still noticeably shorter than my chiropractor who was just shy of 6'2". I also have a 6'2" high school friend that met him and said he thought Arnold was really short.
---------------

This website has several measurements from Arnold in the 60's. They were posted in bodybuilding magazine IronMan way back in July 1967. It looks like he was measured at 6'1 at age 17 and still measured at that height at age 19.

6'1" sounds a believable height for a peak Arnold. The purpose of the pics of Arnold, Wilt & Andre was to show how small Arnold was compared to those two giants. They might've used some trickery to make Arnold look smaller than he really is.

Sotiris, I don’t know where you are from and not sure where you get your heights from but the guy on the left with that Ron Miller pic is Ted Whitten an AFL footballer.
----------------
The guy on the left is Larry O'Day not Ted Whitten. Him and Ron Miller were an Australian tag-team with the very original name called "The Australians".
Several websites have Ron Miller listed at 5'11" or 6'. Not sure what the sources for those listings are. I haven't seen much of Australian wrestling, so I don't know what Miller was billed at while being a pro-wrestler.

I’ve met him and I’m 6ft on the dot, he was a tad taller than me. So I’m not sure where you got Ron Miller at 6ft 🤔 just to let you know that in 1984 I met Andre in a bar in Melbourne Australia.. Trust me he would’ve been very close to 7tf if not a tad above. Not only was he tall but massive all round. I’ve seen 7ft Basketballers and they looked around that height guys like Andrew Bogut I’ve met so on. There’s no way Andre was under 6’11 around that time..

@ 62B in the Duggan vs Andre staredown pic.
6’11” vs 6’2.5” IMO. Is that pic from 1988? I think that’s when Andre & Duggan had a little mini feud ?
__________________________________

I believe that was from 1988. I'd say your guesses are pretty good for both, but would most likely be morning heights. I figure Duggan probably didn't drop below 6'2 1/4" back then as he was 34. Andre's body was already breaking down in 1988 even though I think he was only 42 and had probably started to loose height. I thought Andre was more 6'11" than 6'10" when I saw him, but it was mid morning. He probably wasn't over 6'10.5" by the time he got into the ring with Duggan that night.

Tall thin 7 Foot people usually stand straighter than somebody who 7 ft tall and over 300 pounds Andre was 200 plus pounds heavier than that so when you're that big you tend to Lumber not stand perfectly straight. Thin pencil neck geeks don't get that.

@Boss
You are correct in saying we need not go with opinion or speculation or guessing we need to go with fact. Guessing from pics is an awful way to gauge people's Heights you don't know if the ground is level or the thickness of the shoes are none of it is certain and it is all speculation.

If you watched the documentary on him this year, they stated he was actually measured at 6' 9" 3/4, and weighed 477 pounds
______________________________________-

That's a Dave Meltzer claim. He claims he talked to a French athletic committee that has no real name, no telephone number, no name of the person he "talked" to verify said claim. What it really is, is a Dave Melter opinion. If a peak Andre was 6'9 3/4" then so was a peak Paul Wight. Terry Todd's answer to a direct question from JT was that Andre was 7' or a bit over when younger and lost a peg or two when older. He also went on to say Andre's hands and feet were bigger and longer than Paul's. So who do you believe? A guy like Meltzer who thinks its his calling to dispel all kayfabe and get noticed, or a guy like Todd, who in the past stayed in kayfabe during the 70's or 80's sports illustrated article, but was fairly direct in his answer to JT? Personally. For myself, I know a late 80's Andre was between 6'10" and 6'11". I'm a tall guy (6'3"at the time) that stood right next to Andre and was able to size him up. I'm pretty sure unlike Todd, that Meltzer never met Andre

Look I want to bring up the the Andre,Arnold,Wilt photos up,apparently after seeing 6 or 7 of them now something is wrong(in some pics when Andre brings up his huge head they look nearly the same height,I know Andre has a foot ware advantage but lets not forget Wilts big wig).Yet in those pics they look up to 15.5-16 inches taller than a 6'1.5" inch Arnold this is not possible. The only way I can reconcile this is Arnold was never more than 5'11",the heights just don`t add up it`s the only way these pics work.i mean I think Andre was only 6'11.5" here, anyone have any thoughts on this?

@ Boss, looks like the measurements were taking with his shoes on? Your theory would suggest about a 7’2” Andre with shoes on? IMO, his peak height with dress shoes on was 7’1”...7’0”-ish barefoot.

Yep I mentioned that he was probably wearing his dress shoes for the measurement but I do think it's his legitimate measurements as the writing on the paper is not meant to be seen. It's not my theory I just rather see facts then guessing.

7' in the 70s
6'10" around WM 3
6'9" around 1991 (when Earthquake kayfabe broke his leg with Jimmy Hart's megaphone)

I remember watching Wrestlemania 7, where Andre came to the ring with the Big Boss Man (billed at 6'6, but was probably closer to 6'4) Andre looked around 4 inches taller maximum.

Andre at the tailor in early 1970's and the paper in the tailors hand has Andre's actual measurements on it. His backdrop which is from bottom of his shirt collar to the floor is 74" or 6'2". So this is around the top of his shoulders. You still have his massive head and part of his neck to measure. Hard to argue with facts.

Boss said on 13/Dec/18
Here is Andre and Hogan face to face. You couldn't find a better picture for comparing head sizes. Andre's head comes out 13.05" long. Andre's torso was also very long compared to others. Andre's backdrop measurements from the tailor pics from the early 1970's that were posted here many times before was 6'2" probably in his dress shoes he was wearing that day. Backdrop is from the top of his collar to the floor and is actually supposed to be measured in socks. You still have his head to go on top of that. Andre's head was probably around 3" longer than Wilt's head and Wilt had longer legs than Andre. By the time you reach the tops of their heads they are very close in height.

I swear some of these statements are just lazy and copout statements. Barkley is a sloucher and what if Kobe’s wife measured him at night? The measurement at night is no less valid than one of these athletes measuring less than an hour out of bed and being listed as such. But nothing is ever said about someone who measures at 6 or 7 am but there’s an issue with a measurement at night? An evening measurement doesn’t vary from an afternoon measurement by much maybe 1/8” tops. In many cases, your afternoon and evening measurements will be identical especially if you aren’t on your feet. In fact you can gain height if you are laying around on the couch or sitting on a couch after you get home in the evening
Editor Rob
They were very quick to remove his wife's statement on instagram, I remember when the visitor mentioned, many of us would have read it...the next day it was gone like that. I wonder if Kobe told her 'delete that ****'!
