He actually did look about the same as Costner in Field of Dreams which is one of his last on-screen appearances. Some guys lose hardly anything.
[Editor Rob: I hope celebheights visitors stay tall into their 60's, but unfortunately genetics can mean disc degeneration occurs more in some, than others.]
Sam said on 13/Jul/15
I wonder if he popped on lifts to appear opposite Costner in Field of Dreams, I find it hard to believe he'd still be dead-even with Costner around the age of 80 with a clearly curved spine. There's a few photos of Lancaster hanging with Clark Gable and Gable looks the same height or even possibly a fraction higher. Gable could look as weak as a six foot even but maybe Gable pulled a footwear advantage on the younger star in those (I know Gable wasn't adverse to height trickery after his appearance in The Tall Men compared to Robert Ryan).

Another ticky guy. In The flame and the arrow (great film, by the way), he looks a bit over 1`80. In field of dreams, in his seventies, he looks as tall as Kevin Costner who is clearly a legit 1`85 guy.
In the Charlton Heston page I posted a pic of both men together and Burt doesn´t look over 1`82-83. I could go on.
He looks anywhere from 1`81 to 1`87

Rob, could you add The Killers, Sweet Smell of Success and The Leopard to his credits? I think you could argue the latter two are near his top all time performances.

Lancaster with Gregory Peck. With Lancaster being closer to the camera it makes them look closer in height than they really were.

Yeah, a good biography, could have done without Lancaster's buttocks on the back cover though.

Could look 6ft1-6ft2 in movies

Taller than Bruce Davison in the pretty good western 'Ulzana's Raid'.
Arch Stanton said on 7/Oct/14
:Sam, you've clearly not read the Stroud biography!!
Arch Stanton said on 7/Oct/14
Does look 6'1" next to Scofield in The Train.

Lancaster was in the same rough height class as Lee Marvin in The Professionals, which made him tall. What is interesting about that is that he was once a circus acrobat. That would be a vocation where being tall would be a disadvantage, but you can see Lancaster swinging in circles on a horizontal flag pole in The Flame and the Arrow. That would have taken quite a bit of strength for anyone over six feet tall. A very gifted guy, and obviously intelligent, as in fact most movie stars are.
Sam said on 20/Jun/14
I thought he was fairly good in Birdman of Alcatraz but its definitely one of those Stanley Kramer-type message movies that aged not-so-well, they seemed prevalent in the late 50s/early 60s. It would have been interesting to see a gritty, violent Birdman remake in the 70s with Gene Hackman being directed by someone like Friedkin, Scorsese or Coppola, which would not skimp on the brutal side of the character.
Arch Stanton said on 14/Jun/14
Looks a weak 6'1 in Birdman of Alcatraz. Completely got the atmosphere of Alcatraz and Stroud wrong though. It should have been a gritty, violent film, but it glorified him.
Arch Stanton said on 10/May/14
Not Lancaster's best performance of course, that would be Judgement, Elmer Gantry, or Atlantic City, but I thought the film and his performance was thoroughly enjoyable and Magnani was an amazing actress in it.
Arch Stanton said on 10/May/14
I loved it yeah!! I thought she was amazing in it.
Sam said on 6/May/14
Really, The Rose Tattoo?...I wasn't crazy about that one. He and Anna Magnani overacting the hell out of Tennessee Williams dialogue with overblown campy Italian accents (I know that was just the way Magnani talked but Lancaster struck some false notes). I don't think it was nearly as well directed as Sweet Smell.
Arch Stanton said on 5/May/14
Nah, The Rose Tattoo is the best film of Lancaster's by far I've seen and is now one of my favourites of all time.
Sam said on 26/Mar/14
Yeah, she was definitely a little on the short side, I think she wore heels in Sweet Smell. She's was hot enough that (SPOILER ALERT) it almost explained Lancaster's creepy, incestous obsession with her in the movie.
Arch Stanton said on 25/Mar/14
Sam do you think Susan Harrison looked 5'3" as listed? She was a gorgeous looking gal..
Arch Stanton said on 24/Mar/14
I know Burt, but I go by year of release which was 1960. Technically 1959 really as you say though.

Lancaster still looked 2-2.5 inches taller than Kirk Douglas in lifts in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Those are actually my two favourite Lancaster films too Sam :-]
Burt said on 18/Mar/14
Arch, both "The Unforgiven" and "Elmer Gantry" were filmed in 1959 when Lancaster was 45.
avi said on 16/Mar/14
Never was much taller than 5'10ish Telly Savalas in the birdman from Alcatraz movie. 6'0ish probably

"Sweet Smell of Success is my very favorite Lancaster film"
I have to agree with you Sam, I think It was also Tony Curtis finest acting. Fantastic Film, too bad it wasnt a blockbuster. However, it has become a cult classic.
Sam said on 8/Jan/14
Sweet Smell of Success is my very favorite Lancaster film, more so than From Here to Eternity, a more praised film. Also a big fan of The Killers, Atlantic City, The Leopard and Go Tell the Spartans...he always made interesting choices.
Jeff C said on 6/Jan/14
I think one one of his best films was "Sweet Smell Of Success" with Tony Curtis. Very underrated.
James said on 29/Dec/13
Lancaster was only six foot, as others have said he was three inches shorter than Gary Cooper. Lancaster was 74 when "Field of Dreams" was filmed in 1988, so he might have only been 5'11" in his last movie. He was not actually that fit physically because he chain smoked Camels and drank heavily.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Dec/13
Doesn't really look over 6 ft in The Leopard either. Of course the lovely Claudia Cardinale was also in that film!
Arch Stanton said on 23/Dec/13
What happens to guys in their 60s really is most cruel! Harrison Ford is one of the few guys who seem to have got through his 60s relatively unscathed. If you compare Lancaster in Airport in 1970 to Atlantic City in 1980 he aged 25 years in 10 years! My dad's 66 in June and has aged immensely in the last 5 years and has pretty much lost his athletic frame and has now shrunk and looks quite frail and his skin has yellowed. He looked pretty good up until about 60.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Dec/13
Thanks. Oddly Lancaster looks a bit shorter than 5'10" listed Robert Joy in Atlantic City!! He really looks noticeably shorter than 6'1", he was 67 when they made it.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Dec/13
He won an Oscar for Best Actor for Elmer Gantry and BAFTA for Best Actor for Atlantic City.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Dec/13
Rob can you add Elmer Gantry and Atlantic City? I'd argue that those were among his best known roles.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Dec/13
Lancaster had a really tough year in 1960 didn't he, working opposite Audrey Hepburn in The Unforgiven and Jean Simmons in Elmer Gantry. Poor chap! Looks a strong 6'1 range in The Unforgiven but he's in cowboy boots.
Arch Stanton said on 13/Dec/13
Actually looked 6'2 in Judgement at Nuremberg I though, but they made him look radically different.
Arch Stanton said on 8/Dec/13
In The Rainmaker he has 1-2 inches on an actor who in the film claims to be six foot and they make a thing of it. He also looks a strong 6'1" next to Katharine Hepburn in it IMO. I think He can look more 6' at times but I think 6'1" is accurate for peak. His hair reminds me of mine..
Sam said on 14/Nov/13
He was a interesting guy, I read his biography. He was a producer with a real keen creative eye and successfully broke away from the beefcake image he first had...he also was an experienced acrobat and maintained superior strength to the end of his days. On the other hand, like a lot of successful guys, he could be a real SOB and was a womanizer and generally bad to his wife. My favorite ancedote was when a snooty 7-year-old Macaulay Culkin was rude to a 80-year-old Lancaster, Burt threatened to beat his little butt.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Nov/13
Well he didn't look over an inch shorter than Dean Jagger in Elmer Gantry who was clearly a solid 6'2" next to Peck in earlier films so he had to be 6'1. He can look more 6 ft at other times though.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Nov/13
Doesn't really look over 6 ft in Elmer Gantry

just watched 'Brute Force" (circa 1947) with Charles Bickford co-starring: Bickford
was about 65 at that time. His height was listed as 6'1" and in the scene where they're standing almost nose-to-nose, Burt was at least 2" shorter...
Sam said on 5/Sep/13
Hard to tell, but to my eyes Delon could have pulled off 5'10"...he's got several inches on Charles Bronson for example.
IndroB said on 12/Aug/13
I am sorry, are you serious?
Burt Lancaster is at least 8-10 cm taller than Alain Delon, who incidentally is probably closer to 5'9'' than 5'10''.
6'1'' sounds right for Lancaster, anything over 5'9'' for Delon is way off.
Knowitall said on 18/Jul/13
I'm convinced that Cooper was taller than six three. Perhaps closer to six four.

Think about it. Like Rock Hudson, Cooper always appeared taller than all the men in his films. He was a good two inches talker than six foot two Lon Cheney Jr. And if Tony Perkins was really six two then Coop was six four because he was a solid two inches talker than Perkins in Friendly Persuasion.

So if Coop was six four, and three inches taller than Lancaster, Burt was six one.

Rob see from 26 minutes onwards. Pause at 29:12 in particular, how much to you reckon Gary Cooper has one him? It looks an easy 3 inches to me. I mean if Cooper really was 6 ft 2 Lancaster would be struggling with 5 ft 11! And if Cooper was only 6'3", Lancaster doesn't look above 6'..
[Editor Rob: not sure a big 3 inches there.]
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/13
Rob can you add Elmer Gantry, he won an Oscar for that film!

Do you mean Fields of Dreams? Well that film was 1989, he'd have been 76 by then and probably nearer 5 ft 11. Not seen that film in yonks though, I can't remember how he looked, but as I say I get a very similar height impression in his prime to Reagan and Grant. 6'0.5" is possible for his peak don't you think?
[Editor Rob: yeah it's that film]
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jun/13
Doesn't even look close to a real 6'2" in Vengeance Valley Frenchman. Charlton Heston looked a lot bigger. Lancaster looks about the same height as Cary Grant and Reagan weak 6'1" I think. 6'0.5"-6'1" looks about right. He reminds me a bit of a John Schneider from Smallville facially.
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jun/13
Rob can you update his films Rob, known for films like From Here to Eternity, Marty, Trapeze, Sweet Smell of Success, Elmer Gantry, Birdman of Alcatraz and Atlantic City.

Watching Vengeance Valley right now, haven't been watching so many films of late as I've been enjoying the sunshine!
[Editor Rob: I'll give him a photo, I noticed an article talking about stand ins for Shoeless Joe, the casting was wanting James Earl Jones (6ft 1.5, 235 pounds), Kevin Costner (6ft and 165 pounds) and Burt Lancaster (6ft, 189 pounds)]

Frenchman in regard to your post, your way off. Delon is nowhere near 5ft11.5, I woulnt be so sure if I were you. Next to Charles Bronson and Jane Fonda he was barely taller. The most I will give him will be my exact height which is 5ft9.5.
Frenchman said on 1/Jun/13
Burt Lancaster was 6ft2 (188 cm)at his peak. When I watch a movie I always make comparisons between actors. I know it is tricky or misleading because of the camera angle or else, but I am 66 years old and I have done that for so many years that I have come to reliable conclusions. As for Alain Delon, he is either 181 or 182 (a good 5ft11,5 at his peak). I am sure of that too.

I am a big Alain Delon fan. However, his height has always puzzle me. I grew up with his films as a little kid In Cuba. There is one film in particular called Honor Among Thieves with Charles Bronson, and Delon is one inch taller. So if Bronson is 5.8 then Delon cant be any taller than 5.9. Rob if you get information about his height it will be highly appreciated. Thanks.
[Editor Rob: near 5ft 10 I thought was possible, but I too wasn't sure so haven't yet added him until I watched some of his stuff.]

In Vera Cruz with Gary Cooper (where Burt outshone Cooper in every scene in my opinion), Burt seemed a full three inches shorter than Cooper. Cooper has always been listed as 6 ft 3 & nothing more, so my guess is that Burt was a 6 footer & nothing more.
ArjunaKorale said on 8/May/13
Burt was one of my favourite actors...makes today's cool guys like Tome Cruise look like wimps! I've seen him in many films & I always pegged him out as 184 - 183 cm (dead on 6 feet or half an inch over). I really don't think that he was anything over this.
Clint said on 5/Jan/13
Probably you're right, Sam. Actually there are some sites that list Delon 5.10, the official 182 looks a bit too much for him. Moreover, I have seen a pic of Burt colse to Gary Cooper (6.3-6.4), who looks about 2 or 3 inches taller than him. Definitely, 185-186 seems accurate for Burt.
Ps: why isn't Delon listed on this site?
Sam said on 4/Jan/13
I've seen that movie, Clint. Lancaster did look considerably taller. However, I think Delon's listed height is slightly exaggerated. Next to 5'7" Monica Vitti, in L'eclisse he is scarcely taller when she is in heels. Delon's probably a strong 5'10" nothing more.
Clint said on 2/Jan/13
In the movie "Il Gattopardo" by Luchino Visconti, Lancaster looks much taller than Alain Delon, who is listed about 182. I'd say he looks about three inches taller than Delon, definetly around 190, do you see it possible Rob?
Copnovelist195 said on 9/Nov/12
I would say Lancaster was 6ft1 even into old age, possibly 6ft2 at his peak. Always prided himself on his physical fitness into his sixties when his health completely broke down; he even almost died during a gallstone operation. Just goes to show it's what's in your genes at the end of the day. He spent the last twenty years of his life in pretty poor health despite a lifetime's daily fitness regime and being a former acrobat.
