A lot of actors wore lifts if they knew they were doing several scenes with taller actors. Sometimes the directors wanted it that way too (i.e. hero versus villain).

He did a movie in the 1950's playing a cop, with 6' 3" George Sanders playing the villain. Merrill appeared about 5' 10" alongside Sanders.
I'd guess he was wearing lifts to not be dwarfed by Sanders. Not a chance this guy was a legit 5'10! Anything in 5 ft 8 range is arguable I guess though.

Steve I recommend Phone Call for a Stranger if you've not seen it.

Terrific actor. I just wached him in Twelve O'Clock High. He and everyone else in the cast gave an excellent, realistic performance.

The poor man's Bogart for sure hehe!!

Cheers, can you add Phone Call for a Stranger, The Wonderful Country, A Girl Named Tamiko and Huckleberry Finn? 5'8 looks spot on, always reminded me of Bogart on screen.
