How tall is Jack Nicholson ?

Home :: Bookmark :: About

Jack Nicholson's height is 5ft 8.5in (174 cm)

Peak height was 5ft 9.5in (177 cm)
American actor best known for roles in movies like The Shining, Batman, Easy Rider, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets, The Departed and Anger Management. Carol Kane once said in Screen Stories Magazine: "Jack prefers the actresses with whom he works to be on the short side. I wasn't tall, so I was immediately in. The reason for this is that he is no more than five foot seven or so himself. When he has no other choice but to play opposite a lanky actress, he will wear elevator shoes"

In a 1994 book 'Jack's Life' it mentioned his height, saying: "Jack (five feet nine and a half)."

Don't think he was much above about 5'8" when younger, which was probably still in the average height range for someone of his generation. Same heights as Hopper.
Rory said on 19/Apr/15
I can only see 5'9.5 being his morning height tbh, looks to me a flat 5'9, no more.
Sam said on 3/Apr/15
In The Last Tycoon, Nicholson and Robert De Niro looked pretty similar height, in some shots one or the other could seem to have the edge but I doubt a big difference in height between them.

@CDS Problem is nobody knows how tall Tom Cruise is. Tom Cruise is the last person anyone should use to compare height. Jack is also 25 years older. He's probably lost an inch.
CDS said on 17/Feb/15
5'7" Tom Cruise has looked just as tall as him just about every time I've seen the two together. Is Oliver Reed's claim possible?
Steve said on 17/Jan/15
I agree with Danimal and Judd. 5'9" peak for Nicholson. But these days packing on the weight as well as his advanced age he's probably lost an inch.
Judd said on 16/Jan/15
5'9.5" seems likely for his maybe also 5'8"...
DanielSlaniel said on 3/Jan/15
In About Schmidt, in some scenes Jack Nicholson looks shorter than Dermot Mulroney(listed as 5 ft 8.5in here) and in some scenes he looks around the same height.

He's nearing 80 years old now. 2 inch height loss is pretty possible I think?

Yes, the average 80 year old MALE will have lost 2" in height. Not sure why Rob makes the exception for some people? Jack was 5'9.5" and today is probably just shy of 5'8".

I think he was 5'9" peak. I watched the shining recently and he didn't really look any taller than 5'8" listed Shelley Duvall. In some scenes he actually looked shorter.

She (like most women) was wearing high heels.
jtm said on 20/Dec/14
i doubt shelley duvall was 5'8 but i don't remember what footwear she was wearing in shining.
184.3cm said on 20/Dec/14
I wouldnt give him much more than 5'8, 174cm-175cm seems likely for his peak. 5'9.5 in shoes.
Sam said on 19/Dec/14
He looks pretty heavy at times in older age, I'd bet he'd weigh a bit over 200 pounds or near it, which is a lot on a sub-5'9" frame.

I've read he's seduced almost as many women as his buddy, Warren Beatty, and unlike Beatty has in the last several years been openly chasing girls around.
Nick said on 8/Dec/14
@JB It's due to his bad posture, believe me. It's something I've always noticed in his movies as he tends to slouch quite a bit. Perhaps he suffered from some sort of back problems in his youth.

Rob can you add a photo? Yeah those were definitely right up there!!
Sam said on 13/Oct/14
Come on, Five Easy Pieces and The Last Detail easily rival his best films and performances. Am I right, Rob and Arch?
Sam said on 13/Aug/14
Could we beef up his listings? I'm thinking Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, Terms of Endearment, Batman, As Good As It Gets and The Departed.

There's just too many greats in his filmography to list a minor film like Anger Management (which I enjoyed) IMO but that's leaving out The King of Marvin Gardens, The Passenger, Reds...need I go on!

Yeah that's what I meant, I was very surprised Brando reached almost 80! Jack Nicholson is heading that way at 77.
Sam said on 17/Jul/14
I stand corrected, Brando died at 79 I suppose...
Sam said on 16/Jul/14
He has been a bit overweight in the last 15 years but nothing on the scale of Brando and Orson Welles, both of whose obese conditions undoubtedly contributed to them dying in their early Brando and Beatty he was a womanizer and more of a drug user than Beatty but at 77, Nicholson seems likely to outlive Brando.
Josh said on 11/Jul/14
Jack Nicholson stands at just over 5'8".
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jul/14
When I say like Brando I mean I expected Brando to die in late 60s not that he did...
Arch Stanton said on 9/Jul/14
I'm surprised he's still living in all honesty. Like Brando his lifestyle and being overweight, I'd expected him to die in his late 60s like Brando. Possible he is struggling with 5 ft 8 today.
Sam said on 8/Jul/14
He seems like he holds good posture, throws his head back a lot, I think an inch is a good head loss for now to list, maintained more than the 6-year-younger Robert De Niro has IMO.

looked 5'10 in somethings gotta give, I mean he was barefoot though out the film with 5'7 diane Keaton and had like 3 inches over her a lot. maybe hits 5'9 these days.
Knowitall said on 1/Apr/14
Nonsense. These days Jack is around five-eight. Peak height was never more than five-nine.
gian92 said on 31/Mar/14
in the peak was probably 5'10 , is impossible 5'7

He looks 5'11 easily in Batman.
JB said on 5/Dec/13
@Wat Because people in general are bad at guessing height. I'm 5'8.5" and people have guessed me as short as 5'6"
WAT said on 2/Dec/13
Rob how come Jack at 5'9.5 which is a respectable height. Im about 178cm, Why does he get called 5'7...3 inches shorter...?? how?
Avraham said on 27/Oct/13
5'9" at most by my reckoning. On The Shining, he seemed as tall as Shelley Duvall, officially 5'8", and they had comparable footwear.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Sep/13
Rob, check out 75 minutes Click Here with 5'7" Shirley MacLaine. Both barefoot.

5 foot 9 flat peak. nothin over
JB said on 21/Jun/13
If I were to guess his height based on his movies: He looks 5'10" in Easy Rider and Batman. He looks 5'9" in The Shining and Chinatown. He looks 5'8" in Cuckoo's Nest. And he looks about 5'7.5" in The Last Detail. I'd say 5'8.5" is a fair height to have him at.
Mr. R said on 6/Jun/13
I saw jack a few years ago. He was a weak 5-8.
Tee said on 5/Jun/13
@Mr. Kaplan It's because the majority of his co-stars in that movie were very tall. Even Louise Fletcher(Nurse Ratched) was 5'10" which is a little taller than Jack was. Jack was never 5'10 he was always in the 5'9" range. I really, really doubt he was ever shorter than 5'8" because he looks average height in many of his other films.
Mr. Kaplan said on 5/Jun/13
Seriously, watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That is not a 5'10" man there. He looks 5'8" tops.

Strange as by 1990 he looks barely taller than Hopper but I swear he looks at least 2 inches taller than Hopper in Easy Rider.
Arch Stanton said on 10/May/13
Look 5 ft 10 in Easy Rider next to 5'7" Dennis Hopper.
poo said on 8/Jan/13
watching the last detail right now and he looks really short, but that's next to a few tall co-stars including Randy Quaid.
Sbu said on 7/Jan/13
Rob, what would you estimate Jack's weight at in earlier films like Easy Rider?
[Editor Rob: maybe 160 range]
Larc-186.7cm-188.6cm said on 17/Dec/12
Looked close enough to 5'10 in Batman, maybe he was just an hair under that at peak.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Nov/12
5 ft 7 is a joke Carol Kane! He consistently looks average height in his films.
Arch Stanton said on 16/Nov/12
Watching Anger Management now, looks the same height as Sandler.
The Exorcist said on 11/Nov/12
Looking 5 (ish) inches shorter than Morgan Freeman. Nowadays, he's 5'9" max.

Hi Rob I know this is off topic but would you recommend Jack's Life? I'm looking for a good bio of Nicholson.

As for his height I would say a strong 5'9" peak but I don't see him as 177 cm.
[Editor Rob: I haven't read anything like that so can't really recommend anything.]

The other week I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was made in 1975 when Nicholson presumably was at his peak height.
Even then he didn't look five nine and a half, he was shorter than the vast majority of his co stars, I would say he was 5'8.5" at his peak, now maybe 5'8" or a shade under. If he now wears eleveator shoes as the comment claims it would be hard to tell though.
Sam said on 30/Jan/12
So Rob, you think Jack Nicholson at his peak is a half an inch over Robert De Niro at his?
