Technically the 80th percentile would be 5ft 11 3/8, 5ft 11 3/4 - 6ft I imagine that's the about 85th percentile (assuming an average of 5ft 9).
My opinion:
About 80th - tall-ish (180-181cm)
About 85th - Low end tall (182-183cm)
About 90-97th - tall solid (184 - 190cm)
about 98-99th - very tall (or 191 or 192cm+)

@adrian jacobs and Henrik There's no logical and sober way you'd be guessed as much as 10cm shorter, unless you're severely overweight with bad posture/short legs for your height, something like that. There's probably something off with your measurements or you just can't accept you're only around 180cm. I used to be like that, thinking i was 183-185 because some people guessed me as such until i finally measured myself properly and accepted the truth.

170 cm (a fraction under 5'7) to 190 cm at noon are decent heights in my opinion.
6'0 (182-183 cm) is the perfect height and 6'2 (188 cm) is the alpha male. 189-190 cm (weakers 6'3) still very decent heights

We're just being pedantic and obsessing about small details lol. I have no problem with accepting anything. The times I've been measured at my GP or any physician have just always been earlier in the day, and I'm usually around 183.5-184 cm. I can drop to a smidgen below 183 cm at me evening low, so around 1 cm lower than what I'd measure at a physical examination around lunch.
Does it bother you what we think or what? It's just height lmao

I am 189.5cm (6ft 2.6) first thing during the day and 187.5cm (6ft 1.8) before bed using box and tape measure, and I live in central Sweden.
In crowded areas I usually see a couple of guys who are a good two to three inches taller than me, and I know personally two guys who are 6ft 5. Four inches on me (6ft 6) is rare, though. I feel like there's a big difference between 6ft 2 and 4, even though it is only two inches.
My experience is that by Scandinavian standards, many people consider tall to start at 6ft 3 or 190cm as we say in metric.

@jdubbz Everyone has their own definitions, but to me, i would say that guys from 197 cm and up are exceptionally tall in most countries, but not "feaky" or in other translation "crazy".
I have a friend who is 206 cm, and he described himself as having "extreme length". physically speaking, i guess guys from about 6'9 start looking incredibly tall.
Hmm...I wouldn't say 197cm is exceptional in most western countries, but it's certainly very tall. Exceptional would have to be at least 2 meters or taller. I respect your opinion though - this is a very subjective topic after all.
As for your 2.06m friend, he's definitely what I would call exceptionally tall. Freaky tall is something else though, and I hate using that description because of how demeaning it is. I've seen a few 6'9 - 6'11 guys over the years, and I never thought that their height was freaky. Extreme or exceptional, sure, but seeing them didn't "freak me out".
I did sorta feel that way when I saw a 7'2-3 range guy a few years ago, but that's because seeing someone who is nearly a full head taller than me is so incredibly rare. He gave a very different impression than those 6'9-11 guys, so if freaky tall is a thing, it would describe those who are over 7 foot. At least from my perspective.
Caleb 178.8cm said on 6/Feb/23
When I measure my height facing the wall with a hardcover book, I always get a measurement 1/8" lower than what I get when I measure myself on my stadiometer right before or after the hardcover book measurement.
I used the spine of the book to measure myself and I made sure the book was long enough so that it goes past the top of my head (the book I used was longer than my feet). I also made sure the book was lightweight enough so that it's easy to hold it straight against the wall. Even then my measurements against the wall with the spine of a hardcover book were consistently about 1/8" lower than the stadiometer measurements I took right before or after. However, when I compared my tape measure to my stadiometer at exactly 5'5" which is right below my eye-level so that I have a good view of how tall they are compared to each other, they were the same height from the ground.
Point is, when I measure 5'10 5/16" on my stadiometer, I would measure about 5'10 3/16" facing the wall with the spine of a hardcover book on top of my head at the same time.

Meeting a few people recently, and whew one guy I know claimed 6'2" but my cousin who is probably a strong 6 foot honestly looks a bit taller than him. I suppose it is human nature to exaggerate things. I remember recently some guy from Toronto was trying to tell people it "AVERAGES" -20 there, and looking at each and every data site, I noticed the average January low temperature at Pearson Airport is at -9.4C (I am using the colder weather station to help their claim). Now this is before wind chill, but even with wind chill they would need to average 41 k/h winds at -9.4C to average a wind chill of -20 in Toronto, and it doesn't average anywhere near that wind speed. I suppose it is similar with some people trying to claim 6 foot in a way. Wake up at 5 foot 10.75, and maybe put on some sneakers, boom you are "6 feet tall". I suppose it is human nature in a way to exaggerate things in general idk.

It was shocking how many of the players were several inches shorter than their listings.. some of them was listed as 178 but were maybe 5’7” or 5’8” at best and there were players listed as 6’0” who were shorter than me like Patriot Sejdiu. I think the biggest inflation was Moustafa Zeidan who is listed as 5’9” but was closer to 5’5”, definitely under 5’6” anyway.

When over 50% of the population is made up of women and children, that isn't really saying much. Also, the average woman isn't 5'2-3, but 1.5 inches taller than that.
I get wanting to feel special in some way, but comparing your height to the average woman in an effort to feel above average isn't the way to do it. A 5 foot tall man would feel super tall in a classroom full of 6 year olds. Does that mean he's super tall? Of course not, because that's not a fair comparison.

Not sure how that represents the entire male population as a whole though. Other studies have shown that average height is around 181.9 cm for young ethnic Danish men. Again, evening low is probably 181 cm or a smidgen below.
I'm around 183 cm at my evening low, and in a room of 10 young Danish guys, I'm usually taller than around 5-7. Rarely less, rarely more. It varies a bit.

adrianjacobs: Check out the ncd height calculator data, it's from 2019 and one of the most accurate studies, the studies are based on national surveys and not selfreported studies, so it's almost no chance that it's less than 3 hours out of bed, so up till 8 hours out of bed, you will be max 0.5 to 1 cm shorter. I'ts 19 year olds and the Swedes were 180.5 cm on average.
From all the studies i have seen, 181.5 cm was the maximum average. Interms of numbers atleast, the average is not 182-183 cm.
From all that has been seen, it's hard to see the average ethnic Swede below 180 cm, but not above 182 cm either. One of the tallest people in the world for a reason.
But if the ncd data is correct, they may still be incorrect at some countries. Only 180 cm for a young Swede is still a possibility.

@adrianjacobs: I think that younger white American women are a bit taller than they were in the relatively recent past. My guess is that they average 5'5" now. Asians and Latin Americans skew the averages down to 5'4. Of course, there are many short younger white American women too, especially among my friends.

Your eye level is very low for sure, but of course, I believe you.
Maybe that could explain that you feel shorter than most people your height.
I think 5'11.5 sounds reasonable as an average height for a young Swedish man. As you said, 6'0-6'1 isn't really much above average in Scandinavia these days (65-75% percentile, I'd say). It was tall in the 70s, but times change 😄

I went to a rather big college back in 06-08 with a lot of students and I there was only one guy there who I think was 6ft6 and up close he looked rather freakish and dwarfed one of my 5ft10ish friends. There was a handful of 6ft4 guys and interestingly no 6ft5ers.
This is in England where they average back in those days was slightly shorter than it was know at 176cm range for young males.
My point is I think there is a big difference between how tall 6ft4 and 6ft6 even though it’s only 2 inches.
James.B 172cm said on 26/Jan/23

The average was measured at 5'11.5 for 20-29 year-old swedish men 16 years ago.
And female average of 5'4-5'5? Just curious, please answer this. Never mind that's literally been measured at just over 5'6. If 5'4-5'5 is the average of swedish women, what is the average in countries like UK or America? 5'2?

5'10 can't be average height for a young Swedish man. Even at an evening low I highly doubt it would below 5'11
The average was literally measured at 5'11.5 for 20-29 years old men in 2008, so that was 16 years ago. The average now must obviously be at least as tall, and yet we have these swedes here who know that average is 5'10 or whatever. Honestly, I think the specific height they think of as average may very well be average, they just don't know how 6ft or 6ft1 looks like. They think of it as "5'10-5'11" when it's really much taller. It's the reversed situation of literally all of the rest of the world.
As for my evening low, I'm not sure. I measure it at around 185cm, but my eye level is like 171cm and many of you here would say "impossible". So I don't know. Maybe 184cm or 185cm. Could be even lower, I really don't know, but somewhere in that 6'-6'1 range I suppose.

@Daniel Lee: I'm not sure about that claim. The little people group just says under 4'10 is the start, which makes no sense for a few reasons. They don't take ethnicity or gender into account, for two things. It's just 4'10 for everybody! I think that it's 5'0 and 4'8 for men and women respectively. The heights might be lower in certain countries. I know a lot of girls in the 4'10-4'11 range. They don't seem like dwarfs to me.
MaskDeMasque 5'9.5 said on 24/Jan/23

Daniel Lee 173 cm said on 23/Jan/23
I have just read that people under 4'10 (according to other sources is counting the 4'10) must be called dwarfs or little person.
In my opinion :
Under 157 cm (5'2) = dwarf
157 cm - 159 cm = semi dwarf
160 cm (5'3) - 162 cm = start of "normal height"
Women:
4'9 flat and under dwarf
4'9-4'10 semi dwarf
4'10-4'11 start of "normal height"

What's your evening low? I can feel a bit shorter than average at times but that's mostly if I'm seeing people from afar. When I'm out clubbing and standing closer to people, I notice I'm taller than most guys, but a small majority of course
dreus23 said on 23/Jan/23
I'm beginning to see Adrianjacobs perspective, there's a lot of tall Swedish people, especially in crowded places. No idea how he feels below average at almost 6'1 though, that seems impossible
Generally I'd say the average in my school for male teachers is like 5'10-5'11, the shortest teacher I have is like 5'9-5'10 and he's never seen as short by like anyone, and the tallest is around 6'1-6'1.5. None of them really stand out as anything else but roughly average except maybe the 6'1-6'1.5 guy and even that's debatable. Generally, walking around the school though, I've seen way shorter and taller teachers than that. The shortest I think would be a guy who was like 5'3 max, possibly even as low as 5ft, while the tallest was like 6'8, 6'9 or so. Average for women seems to be solidly 5'4-5'5 territory
The younger generation is probably taller than the older, even if some argue against that theory. I rarely see guys my age around 5'5-5'6, and when I do, I get genuinely surprised. I know one guy who was like 5'5-5'6 but he grew over the summer and is like 5'6.5 now. Wouldn't be surprised if the average really is like 5'11-5'11.5 for younger guys

@Alex6'0 ive got guessed as anywhere 6'2-6'5. Idk how, those guys look pretty big compared to me. Like everyone else said, basically zero chance it was actually growth. People can grow in their early 20s (I certainly did), but after 25 is extremely rare. I’d chalk it up to a mismeasurement or rather just a “good day”. We all have good days where we measure taller even in the evening after physical activity. We just don’t shrink as much for some reason. The next day, the illusion of growth will be unfortunately shattered.

Gian 181cm said on 19/Jan/23
@Bislimi
Also, sometimes you just don't feel that tall and confuse that with feeling "kind of short", if the average is 5'10 for young people I wouldn't feel tall at 5'11 3/8 but I don't would feel short too.
The average for young people where I live, in my opinion (I need to make it clear that there is no formal research on this, it's an opinion) I imagine it to be around 5ft 9 (175-176cm), and I've been to a few parties and barely I felt above average, but it was an isolated anecdotal event as elsewhere I felt quietly above average..
Gian 181cm said on 19/Jan/23

Depending on the country, what you said makes sense, if the average of young people is 5'11 - 6'0 maybe it gives that impression.
Now if the average is 5'9-5'10 then I don't see much sense, unless your friends/colleagues coincidentally are taller than you (then it would be a confirmation bias, I would try to understand more about average height searches of the population).

Gian 181cm said on 18/Jan/23
@James B 172cm
Yes, But it all depends on genetics, I can be 5'8 and great genetics, or 5'11 and bad genetics.
I could name some bodybuilders (Men's Physique) in the 5'8 range who have amazing bodies but I don't know if they are a good parameter as they are not natural, in my own gym there are guys 5'8-5'9 who have guys with a nice shape.
I would trade 5'11 to be 5'9 with Frank Zane's physique xD
I think that regardless of height, everyone should go to the gym, from the 5'3 or 6'3 guy, I at least find it therapeutic to have it as a hobby, I like to study the biomechanics of exercises, read about nutrition (all with professional follow-up ).

Editor Rob
Yeah I was making a video today and when editing it, noticed more grey. Don't plan on having a big beard again, just trim it back to 3mm every week or two.
Remember activity, genetics, diet can all effect height. I think the 50's is a test for our bodies. If you slow down, reduce activity/stretching, you might find you begin to lose height.
I've found the more I'm doing in life, the slower time appears to go.
And priorities change. In 2019 a lot of my time was spent doing websites, youtube and attending cons.
These days I'm doing online work, being a carer to parents and with Jenny we're looking after a toddler in our house half the week.

6’4 minus 4.75 inches, so roughly 5’11.25 or 181cm. 182cm would be the average eye level for a 194cm/6’4 3/8” guy.

Kellan said on 10/Jan/23
BMI isn't that bad for short to average women around 5'0"-5'4", but the low end of the "normal" range gets worse the taller you are especially for men.
For example, these are considered low end "normal" weights by BMI (18.5):
5'6" : 115 lb
5'8" : 122 lb
5'10" : 129 lb
6'0" : 137 lb
6'2" : 144 lb
6'4" : 152 lb
6'6" : 160 lb
The numbers become laughable as you go up. I can't imagine a 6'6" guy weighing 160.

I'm considering that your percentile is between guys 5'9.5 - 5'10, I guess, I could be wrong.
Gian 181cm said on 9/Jan/23
@ZDA
I gave the tall starting pole at 182 cm/5'11.5, not 181 cm.
According to the height percentile calculator, 5'11 3/8 is the 80th percentile in the US, which is considerable, 5'11 3/8 gets at least the upper limit of the average.
The average I feel for young people in my area is 5'9, I definitely don't stand out and feel at least in the 80th percentile, although considering 182-183 cm as the start of tall height I would say I feel tall-ish, my height range on the day it is 5'11 5/9 to 5'11 1/8.
If you consider the 90th percentile for the US (and I think for the UK), the starting height is 184cm/6'0.5.
Now, if you want to consider the 90th percentile with an average of 5'10, that would be 185 cm, or if you want to consider 1 SD, that would be 186 cm.
But overall your idea of 6'0 is good and solid, probably 183cm is tall-ish with an average of 5'10 and tall with an average of 5'9 in my opinion.
Peter 180cm said on 9/Jan/23
@ 179cm A legit 177cm can even look tallish with the right proportions and to a certain amount of people(those under 1.70). Most people that height round up to 1.80 anyway or even 1.79 sometimes to make it sound 'honest'.

Punctuation has zero to do with grammar. Punctuation can be utilized to help establish clarity in sentences, but it can also be used to place emphasis on different aspects of a complete thought.
Grammarly is a tool, that's all it is. If your writing is terrible, then it won't be a helpful tool for you. The software may lend suggestions and display punctuation errors, but the tool will not transform you into a dynamic writer.
If you do not have this quality embedded in you, then all Grammarly will do is ensure that what you wrote actually makes sense to whoever is reading it.
So, no, I am not beating around the bush. You just lack adequate comprehension of the English language, and I was correcting your erroneous judgment of why I sometimes use Grammarly. It is no different than autocorrect on one's mobile device.

The thing about being 6’0” is if I wear boots or something like an air max I feel taller than about 85-90% of people I come across. Which is why I have a hard time just labeling 6’0 as above average. It’s the start of tall IMO but there have been a handful of situations I’ve been in over the years around mostly 6’3 and taller guys where I’ve felt average/short. Ok, I stand corrected then. I was just going by what you said in your original post, so if you do include ranges in your chart then that's good. Still, I'm not sure what makes the method I mentioned more complicated. It's not even my method. It's just BMI with a scaling coefficient of 2.5 instead of 2 to better account for height. There are websites that use that exact formula and call it "better BMI for tall and short people" or something similar. It's just an improved version of BMI.

Kind of off topic but since we're talking about BMI it is kind of sad to see our society's decline in health. I feel like I'm seeing a lot more genuinely out of shape or obese people these days and know several people who have just casually gained a lot of weight over the years, especially after the lockdowns. I'm going to college right now and it's almost breathtaking to see so many people in their late teens and twenties already obese or putting on a lot of weight over a semester. I know BMI is kind of a shaky tool, but most of these overweight/obese BMI aren't there for the same reason Big Alex is.

Unpopular opinion but 5'9.5-5'10 is literally just perfect height range. You're solid average which means your height is never a big part of your identity, so it's near impossible that you'll get "wow you're tall" or "wow you're short" remarks
That's a valid opinion. I will note that a legit 5'9.5-5'10" (measured barefoot in the evening) is nothing to complain about and probably at least an inch taller than a lot of people think it is. A lot of people probably think that I'm about 6 feet tall (when to be honest I'm only 179cm), which leads them to think that 6 feet is average range and 5'10" is shortish or something.

@Bobby: That's very interesting, and I'm sure that some people will learn new things when they read your post. I think that the rats carried fleas that carried the plague in China, and, as you wrote, the diseased rats came aboard ships bound for Europe. I wonder if those rats traveled from Wuhan to Venice. You and others will get what I mean by that.
The "dwarf ancestors" myth still is popular. People don't realize that there were height fluctuations over millennia. I read that men and maybe women were taller than modern people in some places during the Dark Ages. Deprivations, after that, greatly decreased height averages, and they started to rebound at some point after World War II.
The Industrial Revolution brought forth a lot of economic and social deprivations, especially in urban England. There were world record setting height disparities. For instance, the richest teens were close to modern teens while the poorest teens were close to modern sixth graders as far as size is concerned! Rural Americans, at the time, were the tallest demographic.
I think that your five-inch gap sounds reasonable. Of course, it varies by place and time. FE, Dutch women are taller than Indonesian men, both of whom are normal height for their countries. At one time in the 1600s, the Dutch were the SHORTEST population in Europe.

Objectively speaking a man who's at least 6'0 feet tall and weighs over 90kgs/200lbs(i.e. isn't rail-thin), is a BIG MAN.
At 6'0 tall you are taller than 88% of the human population...Imagine a room of a hundred people and only 12 are taller than you.
Rail thin for 6'0 would be under 150 lbs. 200 lbs is very much on the larger side for that height. Also, your numbers don't make sense when applied to most Western countries (where most people who post on CH live). 6'0 is on the taller side of average, but it's generally closer to 80th percentile than 88th. Looking at younger men, it's more like 75th percentile.
Also, there is a huge difference between being 2-3" taller than average (which 6'0 is) and towering over them. I would agree with the poster who said that 6'4 is the start of towering height. 6'0 is above average to tall (depending on your location and opinion), but not a towering height unless you're only around short guys and women.

@ Ηonest 5'11 I think for guys our height anywhere between 80-85kg is fine,we never really start to look overweight unless we push near 90kg.

I think it's a good rule to establish that women are, on average, five inches shorter than men. Speaking of historical heights, I have it on good authority that the height of European men in the Middle Ages was 5'8.25. I once compiled some research into the topic when I was more captivated by human height. Separately, the book, Men of Bronze, talks about the height of Ancient Greek men by citing the measurement of skeletons. It was discovered that the tallest member of Greek society could have been 5'9.
However, a figure of 5'6 was more common for Greek males. I argue that men who grew to 5'9 were most likely conscripted into the army as soldiers were taller than the average man in those days. When the second wave of the Bubonic plague ravaged Europe in 1348 A.D., it negatively impacted the heights of succeeding generations. This is because the plague, in its aftermath, caused famine and poverty. The Bubonic plague is estimated by scholars to have killed 2/3rds of Europe or around 75% of the continent's population. This massive loss in demographics did not recover until the mid to late 19th century. It was around this time that the average height began to increase since the emergence of capitalism was able to usher in a higher standard of living.
The Bubonic plague travelled along the Silk Roads, which was a major trade route between Europe and Asia. The disease itself came from rats in China, which had come aboard merchant vessels bound for Europe. The earliest reports I could find were traced to the Venetian port, which makes sense to me because Venice was a major commercial hub for Europe.
Anyway, just a bit of trivia for you. Hopefully, this proves educational for other visitors. You would be astonished by what people do not know, Poster.

I don't use Grammarly to improve my writing. I have it active to help me locate errors in my punctuation because most of the mistakes I make are with commas. My grammar itself is good, not perfect but good, so your statement is erroneous.
Grammar, by the way, is about how sentences are structured. Grammar will determine the coherency and legibility of what you write. If what you write does not make sense, it means your grammar is terrible.
Here is what the Merriam-Webster dictionary has to say about grammar:
"the study of the classes of words, their inflections (see inflection sense 2), and their functions and relations in the sentence." The Cambridge Dictionary also defines it as, "(the study or use of) the rules about how words change their form and combine with other words to make sentences."
What is a sentence? A sentence is a string of words that form together to produce meaning or message and serves the purpose of communication. Since a sentence is meant to communicate one's thoughts, it ought to be sensible. Do we agree on this?
I might talk about syntax next, but I worry I have already lost you.
TLDR: I don't use Grammarly to improve my writing, I use Grammarly to help with my punctuation.
PS: What is punctuation? Let's consult the Cambridge Dictionary again: "(the use of) special symbols that you add to writing to separate phrases and sentences to show that something is a question, etc." The Merriam-Webster dictionary also defines punctuation as, " the act or practice of inserting standardized marks or signs in written matter to clarify the meaning and separate structural units."
Okay, here's your English language lesson for the day. The next time you call my writing into question, be certain that you understand how sentences are written. My sentences happen to be written well.

Oh, grammar! The bane of every writer's existence! It's always there, lurking in the shadows, waiting to catch us in a moment of weakness and ruin our credibility forever.
But fear not, dear writer! For I am here to save the day with my sage advice on the proper use of grammar.
First and foremost, remember to always use proper capitalization. After all, nothing says "I don't know what I'm talking about" quite like starting every sentence with a lowercase letter.
Next, pay close attention to your punctuation. A misplaced comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence, so be sure to use them sparingly and with great caution. And don't even get me started on the elusive semicolon. It's like a ninja of the punctuation world, sneaking up on you when you least expect it and causing all sorts of confusion.
Finally, don't forget about those pesky homophones. "Their," "there," and "they're" may all sound the same, but they each have their own distinct meaning. Mixing them up will surely lead to chaos and misunderstanding.
So there you have it, folks! Follow these simple rules, and you'll be well on your way to becoming a grammar guru. Happy writing!

btw, that wasn't me typing. It was an AI bot's response to Bobby.
Unfortunately AI will be the death of many websites, but will AI ever replace me?
Of course not.
Even the
AI Bot agreed with me 😄
