@Pierre! Thank you! I saw the shot you mentioned -- full-body, and Bridges edged Arnie out by an inch at best, and had shoes on, and Arnie was barefooted; makes a BIG difference. So I am just about now a convert to yes, Arnie could have indeed been measured 6'1.5" barefoot in the '70s. My only question now for that email -- was it a measurement taken up against a wall -OR- stadiometer, free-standing...LOL Would make about 1/2 inch difference...

Arnold never was a 6'2 guy. Nobody is posting that.
What is clear is that he was in the 6'1 range minimum. He looked every bit of it, althougth he could look 6 at times.

Hi everybody yes its me im back again! I would say as I have pribably stated before I think he is now 178.5cm because the average head height of a man with a medium to large manly head is roughly 24cm / 9 1/4 inches and then deduct is 3.25cm shoes with extra lift you get 178.5cm by dividing his head unit into the kength of his body using ratio scales and a calculator! In his hey day is height was approx 182cm slightly under 6ft!

I'm glad that many people realizing what I always seid. Arnold never was 187, but no more than 183.5-184 cm. Very likely he wore lifts in movies and he lied about his height all the time.

rob i believe the 181 listing is good for him today but he cant really have been 187 cm peak. he looks shorter next to eddie murphy than nick nolte did in boots. But there is no way nick noltes boots give him 4-5 cm extra height than arnolds shoes. i still believe 186 cm arnold peak. barely 184 nolte peak.

Yea he seems about this nowadays , really no taller. I question his peak , I think he was more a flat 6'1er and his measurements were dodgy. He was giving 6'1 at age 19. I really don't think he lost over 2 inches.

@Pierre I remember a newspaper interview with Robert in the early 90s after he got the role and he said Im 5.11" and slim ,Arnie is about an 1" taller but way much more wider but I can fight him easy in the movie. Question is was he really 5-11" to start with. Maybe a strong 5-10" guy in truth.

I think one big factor is that people have a larger-than-life expectation of Arnold and when they meet him and he is "only" 6 feet tall they are underwhelmed! My opinion is that he was maybe 6 feet and a 1/2 inch as a young man and now about 5' 11"

Rob, are you going to lower him to 5'11" for the New Year? There's an overwhelming majority of people (myself included) that strongly feel he has dipped below 5'11" and bringing him down to 5'11" from 5'11.5" would be a reasonable compromise, don't you think?

I'm his biggest fan and I've always been since I was a kid. Also I'm bodybuilding lover and watched all his movies. As a good height gessr too I'm pretty convinced he was the best example of a real 183 cm man / 6'0.25 and maybe 0.5 at morning in his prime. btw I don´t think Jeff was peak 6´1.5" too, he hasn´t 4" on Englund in the vid, only 3-3.25"

Editor Rob yes, I still think he did clear 6ft 1 flat and at least 186cm in his early 20's...now I think he is looking like 181cm might be the most he will measure.

@LordHumongous.....Muscle does make people appear shorter from a distance, but that's not an issue for someone as famous as Arnold. We have zillions of pics of him with other people. Zillions of people have met him and he's done bodybuilding barefoot next to other guys. His height can be accurately guessed with little error. The muscle illusion is only a problem when you don't have enough reference points and you have to eyeball it.
Also it is not common at all for people to lose 2.5 inches by the time they are 70 unless they have vertebrae problems. Reading I have done says about 2" by age 80 and 1" by age 70. A lot of that is due to fallen arches, bone density problems, etc. and not joint compression. Arnold looks upright to me.

I met him in 2014 and I'd say 5'11.5 to 6 foot even. I'm 5'10 and he was only a little taller than me.

We'll most likely never know how tall peak Arnold was for definite, but I think it's safe to assume he was between 6 feet tall and 6'1" range.

Arnold was definitely at least 6’1 peak. All of the heavy squatting and deadlifting he did during his competitive bodybuilding days probably contributed to his early height loss. If you read any of his bodybuilding books he talks about sqatting 500lbs and deadlifting 600lbs with pics to back it up. The discs in his spine have endured far more compression that the average person. We know that he has had at least one knee surgery, a hip surgery, a broken femur from a skiing accident when he was governor. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a vertebrae fusion surgery as well. If you look at his posture in any of his bodybuilding pics versus recent pics his whole body now looks compressed and out of proportion.

Arnie said that he was 6 foot 1 inch as a young guy when he started working out and still the same height . Its in print in the book 'West Coast Bodybuilding Scene - The Golden era'. I will see if I can get a copy from amazon.

Can I ask how it is that people can discern 1/2 inch? I believe AS was listed at 6ft until fairly recently then 'downgraded' to 5ft 11 1/2. How did you measure that?
I think nobody has been more 'transparent' about their height than AS for all sorts of reasons, not least that he was photographed for many years barefoot. That coupled with the unequivocal 6ft 1 1/2 inch measurement and his having said that he was down to a "worrying 6ft 1/2 inch". That all seems perfectly plausible and is supported by much evidence. Posting pictures with odd angles, people in the foreground, unseen footwear and the lay of the ground is pointless and misleading.
My final point is this. I met him about 8 years ago and he was dressed business smart with matching 'dress' shoes. He was comfortably 6ft 1 plus. The photo with the Queen in Conan adds further weight to the original height measurement.

Rob, about Arnold's peak height back in the 80s: I never saw him taller than 6'1 even. He has a large, massive frame but he never looked like he could pass as a weak 6'1½-6'2 guy. Especially when I compare him in Conan to legit 6'2 Marc Singer in Beastmaster, I see a slight difference.

I think whatever it is, Arnold never quite reached the full 6'2 and started losing height relatively early (hence didn't always look his billed height in movies). Combined with a poor posture and people's superhuman expectations of him, many thought him even shorter than he actually was. But since then he's lost further height, for whatever reason, and it really shows.

Houss yep but surely u can't lose that much height thething is even back in the day u see him with 6,2 guys James Cameron George bush sr the guy from running man with the glasses or even the queen in Conan and Bennett in commando said on interviews he wasn't much taller then them u read up on line loads of people who say they met him years ago at film premiers or they no people who worked on films with him all say they was shocked how short he was

Almost natty!!!
He piled on some pounds for both Conan movies, but undoubtedly in the early 80s he was looking (at times) almost slim. It was a good healthy look and worked for him at the time while he was away from competitive bodybuilding and before he really dug into the movie roles.

I think Vince Basile's height gauge could be a little generous by some milimeters and Arnold could have forced a little his posture during the measurement ,which is natural.I think he was more 6"1' after a good nap(so a good 6"1' after a good night rounded up to 6"2'),and so a strong 6"0' during the day.And Lou around 6"3' or strong 6"3'during the day(a good 6"4' after a good night rounded up to 6"5'),Frank Zane more a weak 5"9' or 5"9',Dave Drapper more a strong 5"11'(so 6"0' after a good night),Rick Wayne a strong 5"8'or 5"8'.This is my guess for this day...

This whole thing disturbs me , when he was young he looked so tall , and know he's only 5'10" , I still think he was a tall guy , but his current height is really a mysterious case

In this pic the other guy is closer to the camera than Arnie this's so easy to see , and Arnie is slouching a little bit , in the pic with Gerard butler he look around 183/182 if butler is really 6'2"

@Cole=Around 2.5 maybe 3 inches difference is that i see in the pic you posted with the 6"0' guy.The guy is closer to the camera but slouch a little,he has a long head(see the peak of their heads).Maybe advantageous shoes like Air max or Shox(around 1.25 inch),Arnold wear flat shoes like 0.6/0.7 inches imo.

Grizz, in my opinion it is not a problem of age, but it is at all how long a human can maintain an unaturally mass of muscle.
On about 6'1" 240 pounds are not good and not healthy and not attainable without something.
Now the same do lot of nfl players that decreas their weight at beginning of their end carreer(see Ray Lewis for sample).

@Cole, regardless of his claims on the show,he gave a sound advice there: with age, you should slowly decrease your body weight, no matter how muscular/athletic you are. And he listened to his advice - he's now far leaner than during his prime days. I think he isn't over 190-200 lbs nowadays.

Editor Rob sometimes Arnie might look barely 5ft 11, it will become more apparent in the next 3 years, we will be having 5ft 10 estimates regularly.
